Saints waive fullback Jake Bargas as roster cuts continue

NOF’s Mike Triplett reports the Saints have released fullback Jake Bargas as roster cuts continue ahead of Tuesday’s deadline | @DillySanders

The New Orleans Saints have released fullback Jake Bargas, as first reported by Mike Triplett at NewOrleans.Football. Roster cuts are beginning and this is one of the more expected ones for the team to make. Bargas was signed at the end of May but was never meant to replace current Saints starting fullback Adam Prentice and there is no real need to keep more than one player around at the position on the full roster.

Bargas was an undrafted free agent back in 2020, spending two years with the Minnesota Vikings to start his career. He has been bouncing around practice squads since they moved on last season. He has yet to log a stat in an NFL game. He’ll likely find himself on a practice squad somewhere in the league, if not in New Orleans depending on their plans for Prentice.

Saints kick off a training camp competition at fullback by signing Jake Bargas

The Saints kicked off a training camp competition at fullback by signing Jake Bargas, bringing in competition for Adam Prentice:

Red alert: the New Orleans Saints have opened a training camp competition at fullback, signing veteran free agent Jake Bargas to push Adam Prentice for his roster spot over the summer. Grab your popcorn.

Prentice has been a regular for the Saints at fullback ever since they claimed him off of waivers back in 2021, though he’s spent a lot of time on their practice squad. If Bargas does well, he might take the job for his own.

Bargas played collegiately at North Carolina and signed with the Minnesota Vikings as an undrafted free agent in 2020, though he only appeared in two games and played as many snaps on special teams (5) as he did on offense (7), only getting spot-duty in relief of C.J. Ham as Dalvin Cook’s lead-blocker. He briefly signed with the Chicago Bears last summer before landing with the Miami Dolphins in early November, remaining on their practice squad for the rest of the 2022 season.

The Saints released place kicker Alex Quevedo in a corresponding move to make room for Bargas on their 90-man roster, so they’re now at capacity and any future additions will require matching subtractions. Bargas has been tentatively assigned the No. 40 jersey on the team’s online website, but it was already claimed by rookie linebacker Nick Anderson, so Bargas will have to switch to something else. Barring another move, the only eligible numbers for him are Nos. 16 and 19.

Dolphins work out two on Tuesday, sign one to practice squad

Miami added a new fullback to their squad.

While the practice squad may not be the most notable group on an NFL roster, the Miami Dolphins have proved this season that those players can be extremely valuable.

On Tuesday, the Dolphins released defensive end Big Kat Bryant from their practice squad, leaving a hole for a signing. Miami then worked out two players, fullback Jake Bargas and tight end Josh Hokit. After the workouts, it was Bargas who was actually offered a contract.

Bargas, 25, spent his collegiate career at North Carolina before going undrafted in 2020. He was signed as a free agent after the draft by the Minnesota Vikings and spent his first two seasons mainly on the practice squad. He also spent a few days with the Chicago Bears during the preseason.

Hokit, 24, played for Fresno State in college before also going undrafted in 2020. He signed with the San Francisco 49ers and spent the last two seasons on their practice squad and also spent time with the Arizona Cardinals this preseason. He has experience playing fullback and tight end.

Bears place WR David Moore on IR, sign FB Jake Bargas

The Bears announced a couple of roster moves on Sunday, placing WR David Moore on IR and signing FB Jake Bargas.

The Chicago Bears have announced a couple of roster moves ahead of the second round of cuts on Tuesday.

The Bears have placed wide receiver David Moore on injured reserve, which ends his season with Chicago. The team signed fullback Jake Bargas in a corresponding roster move.

Moore was competing for a depth role in a pretty wide-open receiving room, and he was taking advantage of increased opportunities with injuries at wideout. But Moore suffered a lower leg injury during Family Fest on Aug. 9.

Bargas signed with the Minnesota Vikings as an undrafted free agent in 2020,  and he’s spent most of his career on the practice squad. Bargas was among the first round of roster cuts by Minnesota.

Starting fullback Khari Blasingame was spotted with a cast on his left arm during last Thursday’s preseason game agains the Seahawks. But Blasingame was back at practice Sunday without the brace.

Vikings elevate FB Jake Bargas, DE Eddie Yarbrough for Week 16 Saints game

The Minnesota Vikings announced that the team was elevating two players to the active roster: Eddie Yarbrough and Jake Bargas.

Minnesota has utilized fullback C.J. Ham quite often this season. Ham has helped lead to the way for Dalvin Cook in the running game. The fullback has even made an impact in the receiving game at times.

It’s no secret that a run-heavy team like the Vikings enjoy to use a fullback. So with Ham questionable for the Friday game against the Saints, it makes sense that the team has added some insurance at that position.

Minnesota announced that it has elevated fullback Jake Bargas to the active roster for Week 16. Bargas, a rookie, converted to fullback for the NFL. He played tight end for North Carolina in college. If Ham isn’t ready to go, we may see how Bargas’ positional change has worked out.

Minnesota also elevated defensive end Eddie Yarbrough. He’s a decent depth option for a struggling defensive line. We’ll see if he gets playing time against the Saints.
