Jailton Almeida wants Tai Tuivasa next, sees himself fighting for UFC heavyweight title in 2024

Jailton Almeida expects to be fighting for the UFC heavyweight title in 2024.

[autotag]Jailton Almeida[/autotag] is a man with a plan.

The rising UFC heavyweight contender knows what he wants next and already called his shot shortly after his latest triumph inside the octagon. Almeida (19-2 MMA, 5-0 UFC) submitted Jairzinho Rozenstruik in the first round of their main event contest at UFC on ABC 4, which went down on Saturday night at Spectrum Center in Charlotte, N.C.

And not long after, speaking with reporters at the UFC on ABC post-fight press conference, the Brazilian called for a fight against “Bam Bam.”

“Of course, UFC Abu Dhabi or UFC Brazil around October,” Almeida said. “I want Tai Tuivasa. Either he comes to Brazil and feels the energy down there, or perhaps go to Abu Dhabi, where I heard he actually does his camps. So no worries, we can do that. We’ll make the effort and go to him.”

[lawrence-related id=2642870,2642376,2642891]

The win over Rozenstruik (13-5 MMA, 7-5 UFC), put Almeida on a five-fight winning streak since joining the UFC in early 2022. With plenty of hype behind him, Almeida sees himself fighting for the UFC heavyweight title in 2024.

“I’m taking this as a ladder full of steps, and I’m very happy to be looking into the top 10 right now and by the end of the year make it to seventh or sixth,” Almeida said. “Then next year maybe go and shoot for the title we all dream of.”

UFC on ABC 4 results: Jailton Almeida smothers, chokes Jairzinho Rozenstruik in first

Jailton Almeida didn’t need much time to win his first UFC main event – and didn’t take any damage in the process.

[autotag]Jailton Almeida[/autotag] didn’t need much time to win the first main event of his UFC career.

In the main event of UFC on ABC 4 at Spectrum Center in Charlotte, N.C., Almeida (19-2 MMA, 5-0 UFC) met the biggest name of his career thus far in Jairzinho Rozenstruik for a heavyweight clash. While it was Almeida’s first bout scheduled for 25 minutes, he only needed 3:43 to tap Rozenstruik (13-5 MMA, 7-5 UFC) in another dominating performance.

After touching gloves, Almeida immediately shot for a takedown, but Rozenstruik easily stuffed the attempt. However, “Bigi Boy” was not successful in stopping Almeida’s second shot, which came a few seconds later.

Once on the ground, Almeida didn’t rush things while working from half guard, which did not please some of the fans in Charlotte. It was a methodical approach to improving position, but one that eventually paid off. Almeida found his way into full mount, and the finish would soon follow.

Almeida began raining down heavy hammerfists, turning the few boos into loud cheers. Rozenstruik attempted to defend the strikes, but opted to turn to his side, giving Almeida the opportunity to take his back. The rear-naked choke submission was in tight a split second later. Completely flattened out with Almeida on his back, Rozenstruik couldn’t escape and tapped before going out.

According to UFC Stats, Rozenstruik attempted just two significant strikes, and landed neither of them. Coincidentally, Almeida has only been hit with two significant strikes total over his five UFC bouts, while finishing each opponent – an impressive feat.

With the result, Almeida’s current winning streak stretches to 14 overall in his pro career – a run that began in 2018.

After the fight, Almeida called for another “challenge” and mentioned Tai Tuivasa as a potential next opponent.

Rozenstruik entered on the heels of a Performance of the Night performance against Chris Daukaus at UFC 282, where he ended the fight violently in just 23 seconds. Unfortunately for “Bigi Boy,” he was unable to stave off the smothering ground game from Almeida to remain in the win column.

Rozenstruik takes the walk looking to build upon his 1st round knockout of Chris Daukaus last time out at UFC 282 in December. That victory halted a 2-bout losing streak, including a setback against Alexander Volkov in the previous outing. “Bigi Boy” has a 3-4 record across his last 7 bouts, with 2 losses via KO/TKO.

Almeida is not only 4-0 in his 4 bouts since making his UFC debut, but he has 2 KO/TKO and 2 submission wins. The Brazilian fighter has posted finishes in 13 consecutive pro fights since a unanimous decision loss to Bruno Assis at Shooto Brazil 80 back on Jan. 28, 2018.

Almeida holds a 4.19-to-2.93 significant strikes landed per minute advantage, while landing 69.86% of those punches. He is also tremendous on the mat, managing a 6.73 takedown average, and a 70.59% takedown accuracy percentage with a 2.24 submission average.

UFC on ABC 4: Rozenstruik vs. Almeida picks and predictions

Records: Rozenstruik (13-4-0) | Almeida (18-2-0)

Fight result (2-way line or moneyline)

Almeida (-500) will cost you 5 times your potential return, and that’s just too much risk for not enough reward.

The Brazilian fighter gets stoppages and plenty of victories but it’s better to play the method of victory rather than just taking the fighter on the 2-way line.

I think Rozenstruik can hang around at least into Round 2. As such, I absolutely love ALMEIDA BY KO/TKO/DQ IN ROUND 2 (+1200) for a chance to multiply your initial wager by 12 times.

Over/Under (O/U)

No (-1600): Will the fight go the distance? is absolutely ridiculous, and should be avoided. Instead, in this 5-round bout, I’d roll the dice on OVER 1.5 ROUNDS (+160) for a chance to get a solid return. However, know that this fight must last until there is 1:29 remaining in Round 2, as some bettors tend to mix this wager up a little bit.

UFC on ABC 4 takes place Saturday at Spectrum Center in Charlotte, N.C. The main card airs on ABC at 3 p.m. ET following prelims on ESPN and ESPN+ that start early at 11:30 a.m.

(Click here to open a PDF of the staff picks grid in a separate window.)

In the main event, [autotag]Jairzinho Rozenstruik[/autotag] (13-4 MMA, 7-4 UFC) takes on [autotag]Jailton Almeida[/autotag] (18-2 MMA, 4-0 UFC) at heavyweight. Almeida is more than a 5-1 favorite at some sportsbooks, and he’s got a big lead in the picks from our 11 editors, writers, radio hosts and videographers, who have it as a blowout for Almeida at 9-2.

In the co-feature, the closest fight on the main card from a betting perspective is between former light heavyweight title challenger [autotag]Anthony Smith[/autotag] (36-17 MMA, 11-7 UFC) and [autotag]Johnny Walker[/autotag] (20-7 MMA, 6-4 UFC). The fight nearly is a pick’em at the betting window, and it’s close with our staff members, too, who have Smith with the smallest possible edge at 6-5.

Also on the main card, up-and-coming Irish welterweight [autotag]Ian Machado Garry[/autotag] (11-0 MMA, 4-0 UFC) puts his unbeaten record on the line against his most accomplished opponent yet, [autotag]Daniel Rodriguez[/autotag] (17-3 MMA, 7-2 UFC). Garry is about a -250 favorite and he has a big 8-3 picks lead.

[autotag]Ihor Potieria[/autotag] (19-3 MMA, 1-1 UFC) meets [autotag]Carlos Ulberg[/autotag] (7-1 MMA, 3-1 UFC) in a light heavyweight fight that has Ulberg as a big betting favorite at -450. He’s got a near-unanimous lead in the picks, too – just one of our staff members has Potieria in an upset.

And to open the main card, [autotag]Tim Means[/autotag] (32-14-1 MMA, 14-11 UFC) takes on [autotag]Alex Morono[/autotag] (22-8 MMA, 11-5 UFC) at welterweight. Morono is more than a 2-1 favorite and he has a big 8-3 lead in the picks.

In the MMA Junkie consensus picks, Almeida (77 percent), Walker (50.1 percent), Garry (61 percent), Ulberg (83 percent) and Morono (77 percent) are the choices.

UFC on ABC 4 headliner Jailton Almeida continues to be ‘finish oriented’, seeks quick KO of Jairzinho Rozenstruik

Finishes don’t just happy by accident when UFC heavyweight standout Jailton Almeida fights.

Finishes don’t just happy by accident when [autotag]Jailton Almeida[/autotag] fights. The UFC heavyweight standout is always looking for them.

The proof is in the fact that Almeida (18-2 MMA, 4-0 UFC) has scored a finish in all 18 of his career wins. That includes his Dana White’s Contender Series appearance last year that earned him a UFC contract, as well as his first four promotional fights all within a year.

Almeida’s rampage has led to a No. 12 ranking by the UFC and his first main event, which takes place Saturday at UFC on ABC 4. Almeida will meet No. 9 Jairzinho Rozenstruik (13-4 MMA, 7-4 UFC) at Spectrum Center in Charlotte, N.C., with a huge opportunity to make a statement before a national TV audience.

If Almeida is feeling any pressure to live up to his reputation as a finisher, he didn’t show it during Wednesday’s media day.

“I don’t think there’s any pressure,” Almeida told reporters through an interpreter. “I’m always ready for the full length of the fight. For this one, I’ve trained everything for five rounds. I guess the style is just more effective than most.

“We are very finish oriented, so that’s what we’re always looking for. Doesn’t matter if it’s the first round, the fifth round, whenever I get a chance to do it. No added pressure, something that I just go with the flow.”

[lawrence-related id=2641699,2641708,2641432]

Given the 31-year-old’s rapid rise up the heavyweight division, Almeida feels grateful for this moment more than anything.

“Honestly, things have been going pretty quickly,” Almeida said. “I have like a year and change in the organization. To not only be in a main event but being ranked and everything that’s happened since I got in, I really appreciate the organization for giving me the opportunity.”

UFC on ABC 4 breakdown: How will Jairzinho Rozenstruik handle ‘absolute unit’ Jailton Almeida?

MMA Junkie fight analyst Dan Tom takes a closer look at the UFC on ABC 4 headliner between Jairzinho Rozenstruik and Jailton Almeida.

UFC on ABC 4 takes place this Saturday at Spectrum Center in Charlotte, N.C., where ranked heavyweights [autotag]Jairzinho Rozenstruik[/autotag] and [autotag]Jailton Almeida[/autotag] square off in the main event.

Will he get the job done?
