Where are things with Rutgers football’s kicking competition this spring?

Jai Patel talks kickoff specialist competition.

One of the more intriguing competitions this spring for Rutgers football is the open kickoff specialist role.

Last year, Jude McAtamney handled the kickoff duties for Rutgers. Of 60 kick-off attempts, McAtemeny connected on 40 touchbacks.

Now with the Irish-born kicker having graduated, Rutgers will have a competition at kickoff, with starting field goal kicker Jai Patel involved.

Last season as a redshirt freshman, Jai Patel won the specialist role to handle field goals and point-after attempts. Now, he is looking to add kickoffs to his resume.

“We’re currently doing a little competition between the kickers we have right now – so we’re just going to see how that goes,” Patel said on Tuesday.

“We’re pushing each other really hard and we’re all doing a great job. So just keep fighting each day but we’re all doing a great job in the room and ytrying to get that job.”

Last year, Patel won the specialist job during preseason and went on to have a tremendous season.

He made 83 percent of his field goal attempts and connected on 33-of-34 point after attempts. After a redshirt season spent getting stronger and working on his technique, Patel made a big step and is now locked in as the incumbent starter.

His field goal percentage was the highest in program history.

“Definitely a great honor to be able to set the record books but we kind of move on from that and just get ready for next season,” Patel said.

“Just build on that, get all the experience I had gained from last year and just be able to have a better season for the team and continue to produce.”

What Rutgers football players made the Big Ten’s defense and special teams?

Rutgers football had eight players selected to the all-Big Ten teams.

A total of eight Rutgers football players were named to the All-Big Ten teams for defense and special teams. The announcement, made by the Big Ten, includes both the coach and media selections.

It is a sign of significant progress that eight players were selected to the all-Big Ten teams on defense and special teams. Last year, three players made the list (one on defense, two on special teams).

This year, seven Rutgers players made the all-Big Ten list and one made special teams.

Rutgers is 6-6 (3-5 Big Ten) and has a chance to finish with a winning record for the first time since 2014.

Watch: Jai Patel nails a 50-yard field goal for Rutgers football’s first points

Rutgers kicker Jai Patel made a long field goal for Rutgers football.

PISCATAWAY, N.J. —  Jai Patel got Rutgers football on the board, making a solid 50-yard field goal during what was a really rough first half for the Scarlet Knights.

The points from the foot of Patel made it a 14-3 lead for Maryland.

Patel is now 14-for-16 on field goal attempts and has made two of his three field goal attempts from over 50 yards on the season. A member of the 2022 recruiting class, Patel was a redshirt last season and won the kicking job in the summer.

The kick from Patel had some extra leg to it.

Patel is quite an interesting story. A legacy (his two sisters both attended Rutgers), he suffered a collapsed lung during the spring of his senior year. He was rushed to the hospital.

“Eventually it’s like – I just was so tight. I had trouble breathing,” Patel told Rutgers Wire.

“I called my mom and she helped me get me in the car and then we just rushed out.”

Patel recovered and when he arrived on campus in the summer, he was able to join the team fully for workouts.

A collapsed lung prior to his freshman season couldn’t stop Rutgers kicker Jai Patel

Jai Patel’s journey to Rutgers saw a serious medical crisis that nearly derailed his college career.

PISCATAWAY, N.J. — It came without warning for Jai Patel, the Rutgers football kicker who had no indication in the spring of 2022 that something was drastically wrong in his body.

He should have been coasting into senior prom and graduation. Spring break was on the horizon for Patel and then the home stretch of his high school career.

It was mid-March of his senior year when Patel was getting ready for school and felt a tightening in his lung. He remembers brushing his teeth and thinking nothing of the pain, chalking it up to heartburn or indigestion.

He remembers the time: School was set to begin in an hour and Patel and was focused on getting out the door. He doesn’t like to be late.

Then it began to happen he says, “again and again and again.” The pain would not go away. The tightening was feeling worse.

“Eventually it’s like – I just was so tight. I had trouble breathing,” Patel told Rutgers Wire.

“I called my mom and she helped me get me in the car and then we just rushed out.”

He spent the next week in the hospital with a collapsed lung. The next six weeks were spent rehabbing and in recovery. But, physically, he was nowhere near where was prior to hospitalization.

Patel was one of the top kickers in the nation in the 2022 recruiting class. He had committed to Rutgers early in the process as a preferred walk-on. That fall, he had become a bit of a rock star at Rutgers as he would attend games and stand with the students.

His future classmates loved it and he began bringing recruits and commits into the student section along with him.

But here he was, roughly two months away from reporting to Rutgers as a freshman and he was nowhere near ready. Running and lifting at the level he was accustomed to was simply not something he was physically ready to do.

He admits to not knowing what was going to happen when he stepped foot on campus. If he would be able to participate or practice fully or how any of this could play out for him.

His doctors fully cleared him right before practice, but he says he was still relatively weak by the time he arrived at Rutgers.

“It kind of surprised me because I felt like on my own I was having trouble but I got here and something just clicked magically in my body and I was ready to go full,” Patel said.

“Got to do the running, do the lifting and it felt like nothing ever happened to me – I was back to my normal self.”

Last season was a redshirt year for Patel and it paid off. He packed on some muscle and has added some distance to his kicks. This year, he won the starting job during training camp and has been very accurate for Rutgers.

On the season, he is 11-of-13 on field goal attempts and 26-for-27 on point-after attempts.

Earlier in the season, he was named the Big Ten Special Teams Player of the Week following three field goals made in a win over Temple. This included a 51-yard field goal that he hit with some leg to spare.

“He works very hard at his craft. He has his whole life,” Head coach Greg Schiano said on Wednesday following practice.

“He has a lot of time invested in what he’s doing. So we’re fortunate to have Jai.”

Rutgers runs deep in his family, with both his sisters having graduated from the school. His family is passionate about attending his games and supporting him.

Patel said that this has been a dream come true for him as he has integrated himself as a valuable piece of the special teams unit. His collapsed lung happened about 20 months ago but it seems like an eternity.

It doesn’t define who he is, but he has definitely appreciated the journey and where it has taken him at Rutgers.

“I just approached every day as coming in, just wanting to work hard and do the best I can,” Patel said.

“I do put a lot of work into this; I’ve been training since sixth grade and we always talk here about how no job is open and no one is an incumbent starter. So me and Jude (McAtamney) competed really hard. He’s a really good competitor. He’s doing a fantastic job on kickoff.

“And coach kind of just felt like my accuracy with his power is a great combination for our specialist room. So coming in every day, I’m  trying to work hard and just trying to be competitive and be the best player I can for our team.”

Through two games, Rutgers football kicker Jai Patel is getting noticed for his impact

Jai Patel has stood out for Rutgers football as a steady and strong kicker.

PISCATAWAY, N.J. – Jai Patel has certainly impressed so far this season, the Rutgers football kicker turning in two very sharp performances to start the season.

Named the Big Ten’s Special Teams Player of the Week for his performance on Saturday night against Temple, Patel made a 51-yard field goal in the first half. The kick was the seventh-longest in program history.

On the season, Patel has made four of his five field goals and all six extra point attempts. He has displayed a strong leg and good accuracy since the spring.

Head coach Greg Schiano has seen Patel’s growth since his redshirt season in 2022. Patel is being counted on for a major role this season at Rutgers, one that has been shaky for the program for much of the last decade.

“Yeah, it’s all about you know, chopping your job. He did that,” Schiano said on Wednesday.

“He went out and did what was asked to him he had to. He had three opportunities plus extra points and he was successful on all of them.”

Patel became a fan favorite during his recruitment. As part of the 2022 recruiting class, he was a constant presence at Rutgers home games, often being spotted in the student section cheering on his future team.

From nearby South Brunswick, New Jersey, Patel’s family has roots in Rutgers as both parents attended the school.

He was recruited by North Carolina State, Charlotte, Coastal Carolina and UPenn among other programs. But at the end of the day, he chose to stay home and he committed to Rutgers during the summer of his senior year.

While Schiano has been impressed with Patel’s performances, it is the display of maturity that is sticking out to him. Being a kicker isn’t an easy job, and a specialist must be strong mentally Schiano said.

[lawrence-related id=30082,30080]

“That’s the toughest part of being a specialist. You literally stand for three hours and 30 minutes, and you perform for if you had totaled the time, probably a minute but when your minute is up, when your moments up, you got to perform and he did,” Schiano said.

“When you do that as a specialist you get noticed. Tough thing is when you don’t do it you get noticed as well. There’s nowhere to hide as a specialist. That’s why I always tell them (that) we call you ‘specialist’ for a reason. Because you’re special. You’re special in that you can do something really well.”

Rutgers Jai Patel named Big Ten Special Teams Player of the Week

Jai Patel wins weekly Big Ten honors.

For Rutgers, the 2023 football season has gotten off to an exciting start with two dominating wins. After opening their season with a win against Northwestern, they beat Temple 36-7 on Saturday. Against Temple, Rutgers got contributions from the entire roster, including Jai Patel, who has been named the Big Ten Special Teams Player of the Week.

Against the Owls, Patel made all three of his field goal attempts while placing himself in the program’s record books. In the second quarter, Patel made a 51-yard field goal to give Rutgers a 10-0 lead. It is tied for the seventh-longest make in program history.

Additionally, Patel made three extra points and finished the afternoon with 12 points. He is the first RU kicker to earn Big Ten Special Teams Player of the Week since Rutgers joined the conference.

In his second season as a Scarlet Knight, Patel has shown why he won the job in the offseason and provided a spark. That has not come as a major surprise after what he did in high school. While at South Brunswick High School, Patel set the school record in career field goals with 22 and touchbacks with 67.

The Scarlet Knights will be back in action on Saturday when they welcome Virginia Tech to Piscataway.

Rutgers currently checks in at No. 31 in the nation according to Rivals.com, the class taking a bit of a hit as four-star quarterback Gavin Wimsatt reclassified to the class of 2021 and is currently with the program. But it is still a very strong class featuring six four-star recruits, the most in program history.
