LSU State of the Program: Secondary looks to build a foundation

Here’s what to expect from LSU’s secondary this year and moving forward.

Thinking about the lead-up to last season, I think I wrote more about LSU’s new-look secondary than anything else. [autotag]Brian Kelly[/autotag] rebuilding the room from scratch was a major storyline.

A year later, I’m getting deja vu. LSU, once again, has taken to the portal to fill out the secondary.

Several of last year’s additions were on the older side, approaching the end of their eligibility or in the case of [autotag]Mekhi Garner[/autotag] and [autotag]Jay Ward[/autotag], ready to declare for the draft.

[autotag]Jarrick Bernard-Converse[/autotag], [autotag]Joe Foucha[/autotag] and [autotag]Colby Richardson[/autotag] are gone, too.

A few younger players choose to exit through the portal. [autotag]Raydarious Jones[/autotag], [autotag]Jaelyn Davis-Robinson[/autotag] and [autotag]Damarius McGhee[/autotag] will all be playing elsewhere.

There’s no cause for concern yet with some of the portal’s best corners set to wear purple and gold. Here’s what the group looks like in 2023 and beyond.

Former LSU defensive back commits to SMU

Jaelyn Davis-Robinson is returning to his home state of Texas.

Former Tigers cornerback [autotag]Jaelyn Davis-Robinson[/autotag] has found a new home.

The former three-star cornerback in the 2022 recruiting class Waxahachie, Texas, has committed to SMU. In his lone season at LSU, Davis-Robinson appeared in just three games and totaled four tackles.

He was rated as the No. 483 player in the country coming out of high school per the 247Sports Composite.

Davis-Robinson was expected to be a contributor in 2023, so his decision to transfer came as a bit of a surprise, but with additions in the secondary like Duce Chestnut and JK Johnson, as well as several blue-chip true freshmen, he didn’t have a clear path to the field.

Now, he’ll look for a new beginning in Dallas with four remaining seasons of eligibility.

LSU defensive back enters transfer portal after one season with Tigers

The Tigers lost yet another secondary piece on Thursday.

The Tigers lost another depth player in the secondary on Thursday as true freshman cornerback [autotag]Jaelyn Davis-Robinson[/autotag] entered the transfer portal.

The former three-star prospect and top-500 recruit from Waxahachie, Texas, appeared in three games as a true freshman with LSU. The first player to commit under coach [autotag]Brian Kelly[/autotag], Davis-Robinson totaled four tackles in the win over Southern but had a limited impact the rest of the season.

The Tigers went heavy on veterans in the transfer portal to shore up the secondary heading into the 2022 season, and with some of those players moving on, losing a player like Davis-Robinson hurts LSU’s depth in the defensive backfield moving forward.

He enters the portal with four remaining years of eligibility.

LSU again wearing thin in the secondary entering the offseason

How Brian Kelly rebuilds the secondary will go a long way toward shaping LSU’s 2023 roster.

One of Brian Kelly’s first tasks at LSU this time last year was rebuilding the secondary.

The conclusion of 2021 saw [autotag]Derek Stingley Jr.[/autotag] and [autotag]Cordale Flott[/autotag] head to the NFL while [autotag]Eli Ricks[/autotag] and [autotag]Dwight McGlothern[/autotag] enter the transfer portal.

LSU returned almost no experience at cornerback and a group of safeties that struggled.

The coaching staff did an admirable job filling the holes, getting the likes of [autotag]Mekhi Garner[/autotag], [autotag]Jarrick Bernard-Converse[/autotag], [autotag]Greg Brooks Jr.[/autotag] and [autotag]Joe Foucha[/autotag] from the transfer portal.

[autotag]Major Burns[/autotag], [autotag]Jay Ward[/autotag] and [autotag]Sage Ryan[/autotag] took some steps forward along with the portal additions, and the Tigers’ secondary did a fine job in 2022.

Kelly and company will now be faced with a similar task this offseason.

Ward has declared for the draft and will likely be joined by Bernard-Converse and Garner. The latter has eligibility left but played well enough to earn a spot on Sundays.

Foucha, a fifth-year player, will be off to give it a shot in the league too.

[autotag]Demarius McGhee[/autotag] and [autotag]Raydarious Jones[/autotag], two talented recruits who have been depth pieces for the last couple of years, have entered the portal.

The Tigers should remain fine at safety. There’s a chance LSU gets Brooks back along with Burns. Ryan played a lot of nickel this fall but has the ability to play on the backend. LSU’s 2023 recruiting class currently holds three commitments from blue-chip safeties, too.

The picture grows murky when looking at the cornerbacks. There aren’t many in-house options, especially on the outside.

There’s still [autotag]Sevyn Banks[/autotag], the talented Ohio State transfer whose career has been interrupted by injuries. He made his way back on the field for LSU but was injured once again shortly after.

With a full, healthy offseason under his belt, he could emerge as a solid option in 2023.

Then there’s [autotag]Laterrance Welch[/autotag] and [autotag]Jaelyn Davis-Robinson[/autotag], two talented freshmen that impressed [autotag]Brian Kelly[/autotag] in fall camp but took a redshirt. Without significant additions in the portal, LSU will be relying on both to develop quickly. Even if both pan out in 2023, depth is still a major concern.

The Tigers could be gearing up to add some big-time corners to their 2023 freshmen class. LSU is well positioned with [autotag]Desmond Ricks[/autotag] and [autotag]Javien Toviano[/autotag].

Landing Ricks and Toviano a year after Welch and Davis-Robinson would lay a young foundation of talent and put LSU in a place where it wasn’t relying on the portal to build its secondary every year.

When LSU does start looking in the portal, look for the Tigers to get after names like Fentrell Cypress and JQ Hardaway. Both corners are two of the better players currently on the transfer market and respectively come from Virginia and Cincinnati. LSU has staffers with connections to both programs.

LSU landed two quality corners last year in Garner and Bernard-Converse. You could even throw in [autotag]Colby Richardson[/autotag], who made some positive contributions, as well.

It’s tough to imagine LSU’s defense having the same level of success this year without them. It’ll be just as critical to land at least two quality corners again.

Brian Kelly gives update on redshirting freshmen

Kelly gave an update on a couple of talented freshmen who didn’t see much action this fall.

[autotag]Quency Wiggins[/autotag] and [autotag]Jaelyn Davis-Robinson[/autotag] were critical pieces of Brian Kelly’s first signing class.

Wiggins was one of the top defensive line recruits in the country, and Davis-Robinson,  a cornerback, filled a position of significant need. Neither saw much action with both maintaining redshirts.

Kelly said the extra practices that come with a bowl game will be a good experience for the young guys. It’s not discussed much among fans, but coaches revel in these bowl practice periods.

After the regular season, veterans need some rest, and staffs have an opportunity to evaluate how the younger guys developed over the year. freshmen and sophomores can get a head-start on the 2023 position battles.

LSU will need Wiggins and Davis-Robinson to develop. The Tigers are set to lose a lot of production at defensive end and cornerback.

LSU’s 2022 high school class was small. Kelly didn’t have much time to recruit before signing day and much of that effort had to be spent on the transfer portal.

That makes it even more important that the guys LSU did sign, like Wiggins and Davis-Robinson, work out.

What Jaelyn Davis-Robinson brings to the LSU football team

LSU adds speeds to the team in Jaelyn Davis-Robinson.

[mm-video type=video id=01fv118mprh5481gaqnn playlist_id=01eqbz5s7cf4w69e0n player_id=none image=https://images2.minutemediacdn.com/image/upload/video/thumbnail/mmplus/01fv118mprh5481gaqnn/01fv118mprh5481gaqnn-bb6ac9c49c9849d423f92bbd2919f2df.jpg]

The LSU Tigers added four-star cornerback Jaelyn Davis-Robinson; he chose LSU over Oregon. Davis-Robinson ranks as the No.47 cornerback and No.71 in this year’s class according to the 247Sports composite.

Davis-Robinson ran track in high school, and he ran a 10.6 in the 100 meters. As a result, he will be able to run with just about every receiver on the college level. Another plus is Davis-Robinson is not scared to get physical at the line of scrimmage. As a result, he could be an outstanding press-man corner on the college level.

With his speed, even if he missed the jam at the line, Davis-Robinson would be able to recover quickly. But to play press-man at the college level, Davis-Robinson will need to get bigger. He is currently 175 pounds. So he must get in the weight room and get stronger. Also, Davis-Robinson must work on his off-man coverage to be a complete corner. To improve off-man, he will need to quickly get out of his breaks and learn how to read the quarterback.

Davis-Robinson could develop into a high-level corner if he comes in and works hard on his skills. He already is a physical player, so everything else should fall into place if he is coachable.

Look: Waxahachie cornerback Jaelyn Davis-Robinson commits with an Oregon fakeout

LSU adds another member to the class.

The LSU Tigers are officially on the board on the second signing day of the 2022 class. They added three-star cornerback Jaelyn Davis-Robinson on Wednesday.

He was a late offer by the Tigers staff and visited Baton Rouge this past weekend. It was down to LSU and the Oregon Ducks for his commitment. As it is becoming a tradition as of late, JDR made his decision with a little fakeout for the Ducks fan.

Davis-Robinson is listed as a three-star recruit by 247Sports and the No. 47 cornerback in the country in their composite rankings. He was highly coveted by Oregon but ultimately opted to play closer to home going from DFW to the Bayou.

The Tigers put an emphasis on improving their cornerback situation after losing four starters at the position from the 2021 class with Derek Stingley Jr and Cordale Flott heading to the NFL. Eli Ricks transferred to the Alabama Crimson Tide and Dwight McGlothern is now an Arkansas Razorback.

The Tigers are now at No. 15 in the 247Sports recruiting rankings. They are also No. 10 in the overall class rankings that factor in transfers as well. The Tigers have the No. 3 transfer class in the country behind USC and Ole Miss, who both added five-star transfer quarterbacks.

LSU is only getting started on the day.

Cornerback Jaelyn Davis-Robinson picks up late LSU offer

LSU making a late offer to a three-star cornerback from Texas.

As the 2022 cycle is coming to a close next week, the LSU Tigers are making a late push for a handful of recruits. Recently three-star cornerback Jaelyn Davis-Robinson of Waxahachie, Texas, picked up a late offer from safeties coach Kerry Cooks.

Cornerback is one of the positions that was a priority for the staff. The team added Greg Brooks Jr of Arkansas and Mekhi Garner of ULL through the transfer portal. The team also signed Laterrance Welch in the 2022 recruiting cycle. Davis-Robinson is the latest offer at the position for this class that includes 13 signees.

Currently, Davis-Robinson appears to be down to three schools with Boston College and Oregon also being in the mix. According to his 247Sports profile, Davis-Robinson recently visited Eugene and is set to visit the LSU Tigers on Jan. 28. The staff is also expected to host five-star linebacker Harold Perkins on that date as well.

It will be the final opportunity to make their pitch to the handful of recruits waiting to make their commitment decisions on Feb. 3.
