Mock Draft Monday: Chargers go WR, OT in latest two-round projection

The Chargers get help for quarterback Justin Herbert in the latest two-round mock draft created by Jordan Reid of The Draft Network.

The 2021 NFL Draft is completely out of sight, as the NFL regular season is only three weeks in.

Even though it’s way too early to predict where the Chargers will be picking and the direction they will go, it’s still okay to take a look at what they might do to prepare for the future.

With The Draft Network’s Jordan Reid’s two-round mock draft, here’s a glance at who might interest Los Angeles in next year’s draft.

No. 13, WR DeVonta Smith, Alabama

The Chargers have yet to establish the third wide receiver, and Mike Williams hasn’t been impactful thus far due to being banged up, which is why the team could look to give quarterback Justin Herbert another pass-catching option. Smith would be a strong addition to the offense. The Alabama product plays with a well-rounded route tree, excellent footwork, and brings the separation tactics to thrive at the next level.

With the keys of the franchise now turned over to Justin Herbert, it’s time for the team to heavily invest in the offensive line and to continue to provide him with even better weaponry on the outside. Mike Williams and Keenan Allen is an explosive combination, but the need for a third option at the position is evident. Smith brings another naturally gifted route-runner into the fold. With Smith, Williams, and Allen, Herbert now has one of the best trios in the league.

No. 45, OT Jackson Carman, Clemson

The Chargers are hoping to have a better offensive line than in previous seasons. While the unit showed promise the first two games, they were underwhelming in Sunday’s loss to the Panthers, and there are now durability concerns with free agent acquisitions, tackle Bryan Bulaga and guard Trai Turner. If Los Angeles sees that protection for Herbert is an absolute necessity, Carman should interest them. Carman is a player I enjoyed watching this summer. He has the strength, run blocking and athleticism to project as a starting tackle at the next level.

Draft Wire has Seahawks selecting another tackle in latest mock draft

Luke Easterling of USA TODAY’s Draft Wire has the Seattle Seahawks selecting tackle Jackson Carman out of Clemson in his latest mock draft.

Luke Easterling of USA TODAY’s Draft Wire is convinced the Seattle Seahawks will be selecting an offensive tackle in the 2021 NFL Draft.

In his mock draft from two weeks ago, Easterling projected Texas tackle Samuel Cosmi out of Texas to Seattle. This week, he’s sticking with the position, but mocking a different tackle to the Seahawks  . . . Clemson’s Jackson Carman.

The swap is based on his latest mock draft which assumes Carman’s Clemson teammate, quarterback Trevor Lawrence, isn’t selected at No.1 overall, but instead falls to the Jaguars with the No. 2 pick.

Easterling’s draft order is based on the latest Super Bowl odds.

The Seahawks are always looking for ways to protect superstar QB Russell Wilson and have already made some changes to the starting lineup for the 2020 season.

Depending on how things play out, Seattle very well could be looking at some prospects to plug some holes by the start of next year.

Here’s a look at some lesser-known options the Seahawks could pursue in the 2021 NFL Draft.

Chargers attain balance in way-too-early three-round 2021 mock draft

The Chargers address both sides of the ball in Pro Football Network’s very early three-round mock draft.

With the 2021 NFL Draft still lightyears ahead, it’s never too early to lay out what teams could do to keep improving their rosters.

Pro Football Network’s Ian Cummings recently released a very early 2021 three-mock draft that sees the Chargers getting an offensive tackle, tight end and cornerback.

Let’s take a look at who Los Angeles picked up:

No. 11 | Jackson Carman | OT | Clemson

The Chargers have uncertainty at the left tackle position after failing to address the spot this offseason. If Sam Tevi, Trey Pipkins or Trent Scott don’t pan out in 2020, they could be fishing for Justin Herbert’s blindside blocker early on.

Carman, the 6-foot-5 and nearly 350 pounder is an enormous lineman with highly impressive athleticism and movement skills to match. In 2019, he was named Third-Team All-ACC, helping lead the way up front to 43.9 points per game and 528.7 yards per game.

No. 43 | Brevin Jordan | TE | Miami

Tight end Hunter Henry was franchise tagged rather than being signed to a long-term extension. There is still some time to commit to Henry for another few years, but for now, he only has one more season to prove that he can stay productive and healthy.

If he’s unable to do either or, Los Angeles could be seeking a tight end in the first few rounds, which is why they snag Jordan. The 6-foot-3 and 235 pounder is an impressive athlete with soft hands and a wide catch radius, as well as excellent toughness with and without the ball.

No. 75 | Tyson Campbell | CB | Georgia

The Chargers have one of the most talented secondaries, but there are still questions with the outside spot opposite of Casey Hayward. Michael Davis was strong in coverage last season, but he was inconsistent in the tackling department. Also, he is entering the final year of his contract.

If he isn’t re-signed, Campbell would be the ideal replacement. Campbell was hampered by an injury in 2019, but he is stout when he is healthy. The 6-foot-2 and 185 pounder has flashed the ball skills and reactive athleticism to thrive in Gus Bradley’s system.

Bears target QB, OT in new 2-round 2021 NFL mock draft

The 2020 NFL Draft just concluded over a month ago, but it’s never too early to start looking at 2021 mock drafts. Especially now that the Chicago Bears actually have a first-round pick for the first time in three years. At least, as of now.

In Draft Wire‘s way-too-early 2021 NFL mock draft, Luke Easterling has the Bears targeting two specific offensive needs in quarterback and offensive tackle.

With Chicago’s first-round selection, Easterling has the Bears selecting Georgia quarterback Jamie Newman with the 14th overall pick. Newman is transferring from Wake Forest to Georgia, where his big-time arm and mobility should be fun to watch. Last year, Newman passed for 2,868 yards, 26 touchdowns and 11 interceptions.

Bears general manager Ryan Pace swung and missed with the selection of Mitchell Trubisky, who now finds himself in the middle of a quarterback competition with veteran Nick Foles. If Foles ends up winning the starting job, he could be the bridge quarterback until the Bears bring in a young potential franchise quarterback, perhaps Newman.

Then with the Bears’ second-round pick, Easterling has Chicago drafting Clemson offensive tackle Jackson Carman with the 46th overall pick. Carman took over as the starting left tackle in 2019, where he played 798 snaps on 15 starts for the Tigers.

Chicago is financially strapped to both left tackle Charles Leno Jr. and right tackle Bobby Massie through at least 2021. They’d be wise to get a top offensive tackle prospect like Carman to build for the future.
