UNC basketball sets non-conference game against former player

The UNC basketball program has added American University to the non-conference schedule for the 2024-25 season.

Former North Carolina Tar Heels wing Jackie Manuel will return to the Dean Dome for the first time since being a coach on Hubert Davis’ staff.

Manuel and the American Eagles will head to the Dean Dome for a non-conference game on November 15th.

American is the latest team to join North Carolina’s non-conference schedule for the 2024-25 season. It’s the fourth non-conference game scheduled for November as they will open against Elon (Nov. 4), then head to Kansas (Nov. 8) before hosting American. They will then head to Hawaii ahead of the Maui Invitational to face off against the Rainbow Warriors.

Manuel joined American University in April of 2023, taking an assistant coaching job with the staff. Prior to that, he served as a coaching assistant for the UNC women’s basketball program before moving to the men’s team under Davis.

With the men’s team, Manuel’s biggest role and contributions came with player development.

In 126 games as a player, Manuel averaged 6.2 points, 3.4 rebounds and 1.8 assists per game. He was a two-time All-ACC defensive team selection as well.

The full schedule for the UNC men’s basketball team will be released this Summer with more non-conference games and ACC games to be added to the schedule.

Jackie Manuel leaving UNC basketball staff

The UNC basketball program will lose a staff member as Jackie Manuel is heading to American University.

North Carolina head coach Hubert Davis will have to replace a staff member ahead of the 2023-24 season.

Inside Carolina is reporting Jackie Manuel is expected to leave North Carolina’s staff and will take on a role at American University. Manuel has spent two seasons in his role of director of team and player development under Davis since the head coach took the job.

He will move to a bigger role as an assistant for American University.

Manuel spent four seasons as a player for North Carolina, including starting for the 2005 national championship team. He was known for his defense and brought that element to the Tar Heels’ lineup.

At American University, Manuel will reunite with Duane Simpkins who is the head coach for the program. Simpkins and Manuel spent time as assistants under Wes Miller at UNC Greensboro.

Jackie Manuel to coach North Carolina Men’s Basketball junior varsity team

2005 North Carolina national champion Jackie Manuel set to coach the junior varsity team for UNC men’s basketball program.

Former UNC guard [autotag]Jackie Manuel[/autotag] is set to take on a new role for the North Carolina men’s basketball program.

After spending last season as UNCs’ Men’s basketball director of player and team development, Manuel will be tacking on an additional role as the Junior Varsity coach. Manuel joined the men’s basketball staff in 2021 after being the director of player and team development for the UNC women’s basketball team the year prior.

Manuel played at North Carolina for four seasons, becoming a vital part of the 2005 national champion team. More known for his defense, Manuel received two Atlantic Coast Conference all-defense awards in that span.

This move puts Manuel in the footsteps of Hubert Davis, who served as the JV coach from 2013 to 2019. The Covid-19 pandemic had put a significant pause on sports, including the JV team, which has not had a game played since March of 2020.

There is no schedule yet, but the program has already announced that an interest meeting for those wanting to try out will be held on September 1st by Manuel.

UNC assistant Jackie Manuel dishes on ‘dream offers’ in recruitments

UNC basketball assistant coach Jackie Manuel discusses ‘dream offers’ in recruitments and what it all means for the programs involved.

In the landscape of college basketball, you hear recruits all around the country discuss their ‘dream offers’. Sometimes it’s true and other times it’s not. But how can you really tell?

For a program like North Carolina, it has probably been the ‘dream school’ for numerous high school prospects. But sometimes that doesn’t mean the Tar Heels are a shoe-in to receive a commitment from that recruitment.

Current UNC assistant coach Jackie Manuel knows all too well about recruiting as the ‘dream school’ and also recruiting against them.

“If we’ve got a guy that we really want who considers us his dream school of course that helps,” Manuel says. “That means a lot of work has been done by the brand. But you can’t depend on that. We come at him just as hard as if we weren’t the dream school. If he has another school that’s his dream school, then you have to talk to him and everyone in his circle to make sure he’s genuinely open. At the end of the day, it really all comes down to relationships and fit.”

Look no further than former Duke guard Jay Williams. He went on social media and said he grew up a big UNC fan… obviously that didn’t matter when it came to his decision to go to Duke.
It’s difficult enough trying to recruit a player with no ties to a particular school, but once you throw in the ‘dream offer’ scenario, it seems to murky the waters even more.
