Cleveland gets another Gator, this time Jack Leftwich in 7th round

The fourth-year junior heard his name called in the seventh round on Monday by the Cleveland Indians at pick No. 216.

The 2021 Major League Baseball amateur draft continues to roll along and the latest Gator to get picked among the best that the collegiate ranks have to offer is pitcher Jack Leftwich. The fourth-year junior heard his name called in the seventh round on Monday by the Cleveland Indians at pick No. 216.

The Tribe also drafted his teammate ace pitcher Tommy Mace at No. 69 in the Competitive Balance B round sandwiched between rounds two and three, as well as prep Gators commit infielder Jake Fox with their very next pick at No. 95 overall.

This was not the first time Leftwich has been drafted — the Detroit Tigers took him in the 39th round back in 2017 before he elected to attend UF. While the second time around certainly resulted in a much higher selection, the overall results are rather underwhelming for a hurler who had high hopes in Gainesville, especially given that his ranking per MLB Pipeline entering the draft was No. 156.

The right-hander from Orlando began the 2021 season as the second starter in the rotation, but after six tries found himself relegated to a relief role. He settled into the bullpen reasonably well — though he did continue to have flare-ups now and again — and managed to strike out more than a batter per inning while keeping runners off base. Still, it never really felt like he had earned Kevin O’Sullivan’s confidence back after his demotion.

That said, Leftwich’s draft slot has an estimated value of $203,400, which he may have some leverage in negotiations considering both his higher projection as well as the option to return to Florida. It seems fairly likely that he plays another year in the Orange and Blue, unless there was more to O’Sullivan’s decision than we know.

Jack Leftwich found success in a new role in 2021

Erstwhile starting pitcher Jack Leftwich moved to a closer role in 2021 after struggling early in the season and found some success.

Name: Jack Leftwich

Position: Right-Handed Pitcher

Class: Junior (COVID-19)

Height: 6’4″

Weight: 220 lbs

Hometown: Orlando, Florida

High School: TNXL Academy

2021 statistics:

G GS W-L IP H R BB K ERA WHIP
24 6 7-4 69.2 54 28 22 78 3.36 1.09

Overview:

Leftwich was a big-time recruit in the class of 2017, ranked as the No. 45 player in the country and the No. 7 overall player in the state of Florida. The Orlando native was drafted in the 39th round out of high school by the Detroit Tigers, but he decided to enroll at UF and play college baseball under Kevin O’Sullivan instead.

He started the 2018 season in the bullpen, but a 1.78 ERA earned him a starting role. He ended up starting 12 games as a true freshman, finishing with a 5-5 record and 4.20 ERA. He began his sophomore season in 2019 as a weekend starter, appearing in 13 games. Injuries limited him, and though he struggled at times, he had a 1.77 ERA in his final three appearances.

Leftwich entered 2020 as one of UF’s top-two starters alongside Tommy Mace, and he made four appearances in weekend starts before the season was canceled. He was 2-0 in those games with a 4.15 ERA.

Though he was expected to leave after the season, he returned to Florida after he wasn’t selected in the shortened five-round MLB draft. He began the 2021 season as a weekend starter once again, but he was up-and-down in that role. He eventually transitioned into a closer role, which improved his play. He finished with a 7-4 record and a career-best 3.36 ERA.

Though many thought this would be his final season in Gainesville, now it seems likely that he will return for one more season, either to solidify himself as a closer or attempt to earn back a starting job.

Jack Leftwich is a good bet to ‘put it all together’ in the upcoming season

The Gators’ mid-rotation stalwart is a strong candidate to gain steam and rise up boards in advance of the 2021 MLB draft.

As the baseball season draws nearer, the Florida Gators again have one of the nation’s premier squads. They dominated the field of competition before the coronavirus forced college sports to shut down last spring. Most of the key pieces on their roster stayed intact, despite several of their cornerstones being draft-eligible last July, largely due to the shortened five-round format of the 2020 MLB draft.

Understandably, the most highly-rated Gator is Jud Fabian, who is widely anticipated to be drafted within the first ten picks of the 2021 MLB draft. However, that’s not where it ends for Florida, who has a loaded roster of players with a chance to turn professional.

One player to keep an eye on in the upcoming draft cycle is righty starter Jack Leftwich.

Selected by Detroit in the latest rounds of the 2017 draft, he wisely opted to attend school instead. Florida has been a pipeline for talented pitchers in recent years and Leftwich may just be the next player in line to grab headlines. At least, that’s the opinion of Aaron Fitt, who wrote this for D1 Baseball after seeing him pitch in November.

Leftwich worked fast and stayed in attack mode, flashed three good very good pitches at times, and showed the ability to pitch out of trouble. I’m betting on Leftwich to finally put it all together in 2021.

Of course, there’s still work to be done in refining his game. Neither MLB Pipeline nor FanGraphs rank him within their top 100 prospects for the 2021 draft. Prospects Live is more bullish, but still ranks him well outside the first round. However, if he’s able to put together a more consistent string of performances and get swings and misses off his powerful pitching, Leftwich could rise up draft boards quickly this spring.
