Trojans’ secondary coach Doug Belk ‘silently’ stacking recruiting victories for USC

Doug Belk might got get as many headlines as D’Anton Lynn or Eric Henderson, but he is earning his place at USC.

Lincoln Riley added Doug Belk to the USC football staff during his 2023 defensive coaching staff purge. Belk was asked to improve and transform a USC secondary which did not evolve or get the level of player development it needed from Alex Grinch and Donte Williams.

It shouldn’t be ignored that Taylor Mays got a lot out of the USC secondary in the Holiday Bowl, but that was in an interim capacity. Riley needed a heavy hitter to come in and change the back line of the USC defense. We haven’t yet seen Belk coach USC on a college football game day — his big debut is against LSU in a few weeks — but while coordinator D’Anton Lynn and defensive line coach Eric Henderson might have grabbed more headlines, Belk has silently gone about his business and showed what he can do in recruiting and player acquisition.

USC just received a commitment from Kendarius Reddick, the 5-foot-11, 170-pound four-star safety from Thomasville, Ga. Doug Belk did a solid job  was able to flip Reddick from UCF, another instance of USC going into the Deep South and getting a highly-rated player.  Reddick is a great addition to current 2025 commits Shamar Arnoux and Trestin Castro.

Belk has been on a nice run since his hire late in 2023.  He hung on to the commitments of Marcelles Williams, Isaiah Rubin and Braylon Conley in the 2024 class. If he can hang on to current commits: Brandon Lockhart, Madden Riordan and Joshua Holland while closing on RJ Sermons in 2026, the Trojans secondary can be elite.

He is speaking softly but is beginning to make his mark for the Trojans, improving the quality of the USC secondary.

2024 defensive back Isaiah Rubin officially signs with USC, ending speculation

Any lingering worries about Isaiah Rubin not maintaining his commitment to USC were put to bed.

In the early signing period in December, Los Alamitos (California) cornerback Isaiah Rubin was the only USC commit to not formally sign with the program.

On Wednesday, he made it official, finally signing with the Trojans.

The three-star cornerback is considered to be the No. 36 cornerback prospect in the Class of 2024 and the No. 38 player in the state of California per 247Sports.

“Me and my pops growing up watching SC games,” Rubin said. “He’d been to the SC games when he was a little kid. Me and him, we just have that connection with SC and just wanted to make it happen,” Rubin mentioned to TrojanSports.com.

With the additions of pass rusher Ratumana Bulabalavu, Rubin at corner, and Jadyn Walker at linebacker, the Trojans now have 21 members in their 2024 class, which ranks No. 19 in the nation and No. 5 in the Big Ten, per the On3 Industry Team Recruiting Rankings. The class includes five top-200 recruits.

New commit Isaiah Rubin could thrive in the USC secondary with a good defensive coordinator

With a new defensive coordinator, #USC’s incoming defensive recruits could shine.

Isaiah Rubin, a rising four-star cornerback from Los Alamitos High School, committed to USC last week.

He is considered to be the No. 36 cornerback prospect in the Class of 2024 and the No. 38 player in the state of California, according to 247Sports composite.

Standing at 6-foot-1, 170 pounds, Rubin will bring speed and athleticism to USC’s secondary.

Rubin’s final four was comprised of the Trojans and three other Pac-12 contenders: Utah, Colorado and Oregon.

Rubin spoke about why he chose the Trojans:

“My and my pops grew up big USC fans,” he told On3. “I grew up in Long Beach, then moved to Las Vegas before coming back to southern California for my senior year. I grew up following USC, cheering for them and I still watch Reggie Bush videos before games. My pop went to USC games, and I went with him. This commitment is something for him, too.”

The Southern California native joins coach Lincoln Riley and the Trojans’ Top 25 class in the 2024 team rankings. He now joins top prospects Xavier Jordan (a receiver) and four-star interior offensive lineman Jason Zandamela to headline the class.

Look out for the future duo of Isaiah Rubin and Marcelleus Williams, another four star out of St. John Bosco, in the near future.

Oklahoma fans were right about Lincoln Riley, at least for this specific season.

USC assistants need to be coaching for their jobs.

Lincoln Riley did not assemble an elite 2023 roster, which surprised us and a lot of other observers.

Is USC ready to win in 2024 with Miller Moss or Malachi Nelson at quarterback? Lincoln Riley has to be honest about how he answers that question.

Brent Venables is coaching Oklahoma far better this year than Lincoln Riley is coaching USC. It’s up to Riley to change that reality.
