Michigan football running back undergoes career-ending surgery

This really stinks for him. We wish him nothing but the best! #MichiganMan

Michigan running back Isaiah Gash was entering his fourth season as a Wolverine. Gash started his Michigan career as a walk-on player who worked his tail off to earn valuable playing time.

His hard work paid off because, in January, coach Jim Harbaugh announced Gash had earned a scholarship entering his senior year on the team.

But on Monday, Gash posted on TikTok that he was getting career-ending knee surgery.

Gash will be forever remembered by Michigan fans for his play against Illinois to keep the Wolverines’ undefeated season alive. Michigan was facing a fourth down on the Illini 45-yard line and the Wolverines threw a pass to Gash for a first down to keep the Michigan season alive. Jake Moody ended up kicking a game-winning field goal for the Wolverines to beat Illinois.

During his freshman year, Gash didn’t receive any game action. During his sophomore campaign, Gash received six carries for 17 yards. And last year, his junior season, he played in nine games. He received 19 carries for 101 yards and two scores. Plus, Gash caught three passes for 24 yards.

Gash finishes his Michigan career as a two-time letterman, and he was an Academic All-Big Ten honoree in 2021. We wish Gash nothing but the best and a fast healing.

Michigan football walk-on running back earns scholarship

Big congratulations! #GoBlue

It’s never an easy proposition to be a walk-on at any school, as much is asked, but little recognition goes your way compared to the scholarship players. When you get into the game, fans often question, ‘Who?’ and demand why the star players aren’t in.

But if you’re a walk-on who earns a scholarship, you’ve truly earned that honor, having had to work twice as hard for that level of recognition.

Michigan football has been known to be quite friendly to walk-ons, with several not only earning scholarships in recent years, but many becoming bona fide playmakers. A decade ago, it was safety Jordan Kovacs who burst onto the scene, but we’ve seen others, such as all three of the Glasgow brothers — each of whom went from being walk-ons to scholarship players to NFL draft picks. On Monday, the father of such a player announced that his son has earned a scholarship.

That’s former NFL fullback standout Sam Gash speaking of Isaiah Gash, the running back who has often earned accolades from head coach Jim Harbaugh. Gash’s claim to fame in 2022 was his redemption via catching a pivotal fourth-down pass, setting up the game-winning field goal against Illinois after having dropped an equally pivotal pass earlier in the game.

He had 19 carries for 101 yards and two touchdowns in 2022.

Michigan football players whose fathers have NFL pedigrees

NFL blood is in their veins! #GoBlue

One thing you can often point to when it comes to a college football player having success is ‘it’s in their blood.’ for eight Michigan football players, that’s certainly true.

While Michigan football sends a ton of players to the NFL on a yearly basis, often times, there are players in Ann Arbor who have descended from former NFL players. Though it’s rare that the NFL legacies are also Wolverine legacies, having grown up with someone having had pro experience can often be an indicator of future success.

With that in mind, here are the eight Michigan Wolverines who are on the 2022 team who have had fathers who played in the NFL.

The Wolverines continued to add to their 2020 class on Monday with the pledge of a Green Bay (WI) running back.

On Jan. 19, Green Bay (WI) Bay Port running back Isaiah Gash added a preferred walk-on offer from the Wolverines, and it didn’t take long for the 5-foot-10, 180-pound tailback to decide that Ann Arbor was the right place for him.

With a slew of other preferred walk-on offers on the table — in-state rival Michigan State offered just over a week later — Gash narrowed in on the University of Michigan, ultimately pledging to join the class, he announced via Twitter on Monday evening.

Now that both Early Signing Day and National Signing Day are in the rearview, the Wolverines have been adding to their ranks via preferred walk-ons, with the addition of multiple in-state products in recent weeks, including a wideout from Lake Orion and a quarterback from Traverse City.

The addition of Gash helps bolster a stacked running backs room, but one that recently lost 2019 preferred walk-on Jordan Castleberry, who transferred to Maryland last month.

Picking Michigan was something of a no-brainer for Gash, as he originally hails from the Ann Arbor area, as noted by the Green Bay Press Gazette.

Given his lack of FBS-level offers, he’s coming to town with something of a chip on his shoulder.

It’s a homecoming for Gash, who grew up about 30 miles from Ann Arbor and lived there for the first seven years of his life.

The 5-foot-10, 185-pound senior already is a dedicated worker, traits he displayed in becoming one of the best at his position in the state and ending his career as Bay Port’s all-time leading rusher with almost 4,500 yards.

But Division I schools never called with offers. It’s going to be the biggest challenge of his life at Michigan, but if he has anything to say about it, he’s going to make a lot of other teams regret not coming after him.

“I definitely agree with the term, ‘Chip on my shoulder,’” Gash said. “I feel like I was underrecruited a little bit. So, it is nice to get the chance to show everyone wrong. I’m the last person on the depth chart right now for Michigan, but just being able to prove to everyone that I am a Division I caliber player and you overlooked me if you didn’t look at me at all.”

Gash visited Michigan and Michigan State last weekend.
