Iowa Hawkeyes hold at No. 3 in the USA TODAY Sports Coaches Poll

After a week that saw two strong road wins, the Iowa Hawkeyes women’s basketball team holds their spot in the USA TODAY Sports Coaches Poll.

Two road wins against Power 5 teams is a good way to ensure that your spot in the USA TODAY Sports Coaches Poll remains untouched regardless of what goes on around you.

The Iowa Hawkeyes did that this week with road wins over Iowa State in the Cy-Hawk game and in front of a sellout crowd on the road against the Wisconsin Badgers. The Hawkeyes are No. 3 in this week’s USA TODAY Sports Coaches poll.

Iowa is behind only South Carolina and UCLA, each clinging to a 9-0 record. The Gamecocks, No. 1, received all of the first-place votes in the poll. The Hawkeyes are the highest-ranked team with one loss.

While No. 3 in this poll, the Hawkeyes sit at No. 4 in the AP Top 25 poll. The AP and the Coaches Poll have the Hawkeyes and North Carolina State Wolfpack trading between No. 3 and No. 4.

Iowa’s next contest comes on Saturday, Dec. 16 against Cleveland State as the second game of the Hy-Vee Hawkeye Showcase doubleheader. This game comes after the conclusion of the men’s game which features the Iowa Hawkeyes against Florida A&M. The games are at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines, Iowa.

Iowa Hawkeyes women’s basketball holds steady in AP Top 25 poll

The newest Associated Press Top 25 poll sees the Iowa Hawkeyes women’s basketball team hold steady this week after handling business.

Last week saw the Iowa Hawkeyes women’s basketball team handle their business in two big-time showdowns, each on the road. They took down the Iowa State Cyclones in the Cy-Hawk game by a score of 67-58. Following that, the Hawkeyes went north to Madison, Wisconsin, and knocked off the Wisconsin Badgers 87-65 in front of a packed house.

The two wins have the Hawkeyes holding steady in the newest Associated Press Top 25. Iowa comes in at No. 4 in the country with their 10-1 record. While ranked fourth, they are not receiving any votes for No. 1 as South Carolina has taken all of those.

Ahead of Iowa is UCLA at No. 2 and North Carolina State at No. 3. All three teams ahead of the Hawkeyes are undefeated. Behind Iowa is Texas at No. 5 and USC at No. 6, each also undefeated. Other Big Ten schools appearing in the poll include Ohio State at No. 12 and Indiana at No. 15.

The Hawkeyes have a bit of a break until their next game on Saturday, Dec. 16 against Cleveland State in Des Moines, Iowa for the Hy-Vee Hawkeye Showcase. Following that, Iowa hosts Loyola-Chicago on Thursday, Dec. 16 as their final test before getting into the Big Ten slate.

Kate Martin enters uncharted, historic territory for the Iowa Hawkeyes

We know Caitlin Clark is electric, but she can’t do it alone. Kate Martin helps make Iowa go. She has entered uncharted territory for Iowa.

It takes a team to make things go. That is how the Iowa Hawkeyes women’s basketball team plays. Sure, Caitlin Clark has done more for women’s basketball than anyone before her, but to think she is doing it alone would be dismissing some great efforts.

One of those exceptional efforts is from graduate guard Kate Martin and everything she does for this team. When they need someone else to score, she finds a way. When they need to get a rebound, she comes up with it. When they need a stand on defense, Lisa Bluder trusts her.

All of this has made her the first-ever Iowa women’s basketball player to have recorded at least 900 points, 500 rebounds, 400 assists, 120 steals, and 60 blocks. Bailey Turner, Iowa’s Assistant Director of Strategic Communications, reported this.

This all-around effort was on display in Iowa’s recent win over Iowa State. Martin’s stat line in this game encapsulated her career as she tallied 16 points, four rebounds, three steals, an assistant, and one block.

Kate Martin has become Iowa’s glue piece and someone they can count on late in games when they need someone to step up. Her efforts are Herculean at times to elevate this Iowa team by doing the dirty work and it directly relates to the success this team is seeing.

Caitlin Clark, Virginia Tech’s Georgia Amoore sing high praises of each other

After a battle of two title contenders, Iowa’s Caitlin Clark and Virginia Tech’s Georgia Amoore offered each other high praise.

The Iowa Hawkeyes women’s basketball team wasted no time getting their first statement win of the season. The Hawkeyes’ 80-76 win over No. 5 Virginia Tech signaled to the rest of the country that Iowa is once again primed to be in the mix as a national title contender all year long.

Led by Caitlin Clark’s 44 points, the Hawkeyes had a strong second half in their early season resume-boosting win. On the other side, Virginia Tech’s Georgia Amoore didn’t disappoint in her 31-point showing.

Following the matchup, the two had high praises for each other’s performances showing what women’s college basketball can and should be. Mitchell Norman of For The Win captured the fantastic postgame comments.

“She’s literally been gifted by every God you can imagine. She’s insane… She’s a generational talent,” Amoore said when discussing Clark’s play.

Clark also let the world know just how impressed she was with Amoore’s outing and doing everything in her power to keep the Hokies in this one.

“In the fourth, it got exciting. We were trading threes and it felt like that’s what both teams are about is really great offense… Georgia is one of the best guards in the country. I think that’s pretty obvious,” Clark said when appreciating Amoore’s night.

Caitlin Clark finished the night with 44 points, eight rebounds, and six assists. Georgia Amoore led the way for the Hokies with 31 points, three assists, and one rebound.

These two teams are destined for the NCAA Tournament and will surely be making late-season charges for the women’s college basketball crown. This early-season matchup showcased the electricity offered in this sport.

The sport of women’s college basketball is in great hands and Caitlin Clark and Georgia Amoore shined under the brightest lights to give America a show.

Iowa Hawkeyes women’s basketball chosen as preseason Big Ten favorite by Coaches, Media

Coming off an electric year, the Iowa women’s basketball team was picked as the favorite in both the Coaches and Media preseason polls.

Expectations and pressure are a privilege. That is what the Iowa Hawkeyes women’s basketball team will be dealing with throughout the duration of the 2023-24 women’s college basketball season.

The Hawkeyes are expected to be one of the best teams in America that could compete for it all and make a deep run in the NCAA Tournament. Before any of that, the Big Ten Conference is their first goal.

Iowa was picked as the preseason favorite in both the Big Ten Coaches and Media polls.

Iowa rattled off a 31-7 overall record last year with a 15-3 mark in Big Ten play on their way to winning the conference title and making an appearance in the National Championship.

Just behind Iowa in the Coaches Rankings are No. 2 Ohio State, No. 3 Indiana, No. 4 Maryland, and No. 5 Illinois. The Media Rankings have Iowa at No. 1 as well, but some shakeups behind them. The rest of the rankings according to the media are No. 2 Indiana, No. 3 Ohio State, No. 4 Maryland, and No. 5 Michigan.

With the expectations in the Big Ten, the Hawkeyes are going to have a target on their back each game. No matter who they play or where they play them, they are going to get each team’s best shot.

USC basketball team watched Iowa superstar Caitlin Clark play in Croatia

From @HawkeyesWire: #USC MBB and @IowaWBB were in Dubrovnik, Croatia, at the same time. The Trojans wanted to see Clark play.

Game recognize game, as they say. The USC men’s basketball team was in Dubrovnik, Croatia, at the same time the Iowa women’s basketball team. Two teams were in the same city on an August European tour.

The Trojans did not pass up the chance to see an elite basketball player in action.

Our friends at Hawkeyes Wire have the story on USC taking time out of its European tour to watch Caitlin Clark do her thing on the court:

“Everybody wants to crash the Caitlin Clark party.

“That includes the USC Trojans men’s basketball team. In the midst of their own overseas trek across Greece and Croatia, USC made sure to swing by in Dubrovnik to watch the Iowa Hawkeyes dominate the Croatia All-Stars.

“The Trojans were treated to a pair of vintage Clark trifectas and a nine-point outing from the superstar in the Hawkeyes’ win. Clark’s big performance on the trip came during a 30-point performance that included 6-of-13 3-point shooting versus the Croatian Club Team several days prior.”

Iowa women’s basketball is where USC men’s basketball (and women’s basketball, for that matter) wants to be. Iowa made the Final Four and the national championship game last season. Isaiah Collier could be the superstar who propels USC to a higher level, much as Clark has lifted Iowa to the women’s basketball stratosphere.

This story reinforces the solidarity athletes feel: Ballers want to see other ballers play. They appreciate good ball and want to be better. Boogie Ellis and Isaiah Collier probably did learn something from seeing a master of the craft — Caitlin Clark — move around the court. If it helps USC win a big game this season, the European tour stop in Croatia could prove to be more beneficial than anyone originally could have imagined.

Iowa Hawkeyes 2023-24 women’s basketball season tickets officially sold out

The epicenter of women’s basketball will be Carver-Hawkeye Arena this season. All season tickets for the 2023-24 season have sold out.

The Iowa Hawkeyes women’s basketball team has taken Iowa fans, the state of Iowa, the sport of women’s basketball, and America by storm. Must-watch television with Caitlin Clark leading the way, the Hawkeyes have now solidified that Carver-Hawkeye Arena will be the epicenter of women’s basketball this year.

Coming off a 2022-23 season that saw the Hawkeyes advance to the Final Four and national championship game, the hype and excitement for this upcoming season are reaching heights that are unheard of. Those heights include the recent news that all season tickets for the 2023-24 season have officially sold out.

Last year saw the Hawkeyes post an overall record of 31-7 (15-3 Big Ten) en route to a Big Ten Tournament championship. Following that, Iowa put on a show for the ages in the NCAA Tournament. Buoyed by Caitlin Clark’s constant production leading to double-doubles and triple-doubles, Iowa advanced to the title game.

The anticipation among fans for what the ladies can do this season is among some of the best in the nation. Fans of the women’s team are second to none and are going to be showing up the entire year.

Breaking records, this news comes right on the heels of the announcement that the women will be playing in the “Crossover at Kinnick” when they take on DePaul in an exhibition game inside Kinnick Stadium.

Between that game likely breaking an attendance record and season tickets sold out, Carver-Hawkeye Arena is going to be rocking this season.
