Iowa Hawkeyes climb to No. 2 in AP Top 25 poll

Another undefeated week capped off with a statement win has the Iowa Hawkeyes climbing in the AP Top 25 Women’s College Basketball Poll.

The Iowa Hawkeyes women’s basketball team has hit its stride and it has everything working smoothly right now. The Hawkeyes went 2-0 in Big Ten play this week with a dominant 96-71 road win over the Purdue Boilermakers and a statement blowout of ranked Indiana.

The strong week has the Hawkeyes climbing in the AP Top 25 Women’s College Basketball Poll. At No. 3 last week, Iowa moved up to No. 2 in the rankings due to a combination of their strong week and a slip-up by UCLA.

Ahead of Iowa (17-1) is No. 1 South Carolina, which is undefeated at 15-0. Chasing the Hawkeyes are No. 3 Colorado and No. 4 North Carolina State.

The Hawkeyes are undefeated (6-0) and in first place in the Big Ten. Up next for Iowa is a home game against the Wisconsin Badgers on Tuesday, and a road trip to Columbus Ohio on Saturday to take on the Ohio State Buckeyes.

Flexing their muscles: Takeaways from Iowa Hawkeyes’ statement win over Indiana

The nation was watching and the Hawkeyes delivered. Takeaways from Iowa’s impressive, statement win over the Indiana Hoosiers.

The lights were never too bright for the Iowa Hawkeyes in this one. FOX had Gus Johnson in town for the call with the game nationally televised against another top-20 Big Ten team.

It didn’t phase Iowa for one second. The Hawkeyes took full advantage of the spotlight and never let the Indiana Hoosiers have a second to breathe on their way to an 84-57 blowout win inside Carver-Hawkeye Arena in front of a sellout crowd. A crowd that packed the place despite slow, snowy travel and frigid temperatures.

Caitlin Clark put on another masterpiece for the nation to see with dazzling assists at the forefront and her incredible shooting range. But, Clark had her sidekicks Gabbie Marshall, Kate Martin, and Molly Davis shining just as bright in the biggest moment of the year up to this point for the Hawkeyes.

The win propels Iowa into outright first place in the Big Ten as conference plays continue to be a gauntlet for each team to trek through. With this win, here are the takeaways from the statement performance made by Iowa.

The Caitlin Clark Effect is alive and real as Iowa Hawkeyes are selling out arenas

Caitlin Clark has attained full on rockstar-level fame. She and the Iowa Hawkeyes are selling out every arena they step foot in.

Let’s just call a spade a spade and say it how it is. Caitlin Clark is the biggest thing in women’s basketball and college basketball, and she is right up there with some of the biggest storylines in all of sports.

The Iowa Hawkeyes‘ superstar point guard has been putting up ridiculous numbers and hanging up triple-doubles like it’s just another day at the office all while leading the Hawkeyes to a 16-1 record.

Everywhere Clark and Iowa head has tickets sell like hotcakes and sellout follows sellout. Front Office Sports (FOS) analyzed the data and discovered the Hawkeyes are increasing opposing teams’ attendance by 145%.

Not only has the attendance increased, but the Hawkeyes have helped sell out every away game they have played this season. Iowa is bringing fans into arenas in bulk and it is undeniable how much intrigue there is to see Clark play in person.

The Hawkeyes have a home court advantage inside Carver-Hawkeye Arena in each home game they play, which are also standard practice to be sold out. Opposing arenas being sold out doesn’t just make the atmosphere more electric, it also grows the sport of women’s college basketball with more exposure to fans.

Per University of Iowa assistant director of strategic communications Bailey Turner, if the Hawkeyes’ final six road games wind up as sellouts, Iowa will have helped sell out or break an attendance record in 30 of 32 regular season games this season.

Takeaways as the Iowa Hawkeyes ace road test against Purdue Boilermakers

The Hawkeyes had a mid-week date on the road against the Purdue Boilermakers. That isn’t an easy test. Iowa aced it with a 96-71 victory.

A Wednesday road test in the middle of Big Ten play is never easy regardless of who you are. Things get even tougher when you are the Iowa Hawkeyes women’s basketball team carrying a big bullseye on your back into every arena you step into.

The Hawkeyes went to West Lafayette, Indiana, and took down the Purdue Boilermakers 96-71 inside the famous Mackey Arena in a showing that may not be overly memorable but one that shows this team is on a mission and not faltering.

Everything was working, this team played confidently, and the Hawkeyes handled their business as you would expect the No. 3 team in the nation to do.

Iowa wasn’t caught looking ahead or sleepwalking through a game that could often catch a team and cause them to slip up. It was a phenomenal showing and here are the takeaways from the performance.

Caitlin Clark named the Naismith Women’s College Player of the Week

Caitlin Clark has it all working for her right now. She has everyone on notice and is the most recent Naismith Women’s Player of the Week.

Caitlin Clark doesn’t just want the Naismith College Player of the Year Award once. The Iowa Hawkeyes point guard is putting together a mighty strong case to defend her trophy in back-to-back years.

After her monster week that can only be categorized by a buzzer-beater and triple-double, Caitlin Clark has been named the Naismith Women’s College Player of the Week.

After a monstrous 2022-23 season that saw Clark take home the Naismith, her 2023-24 season is off to just as good if not a better start. The point guard is averaging 31.3 points, 7.6 assists, and 7.1 rebounds per game on the way to jumping out to a 15-1 record.

Caitlin Clark’s test will be keeping these numbers going as Big Ten play heats up and it is a gauntlet week in and week out as the Hawkeyes have a target on their backs being the reigning Big Ten champs and a top-ranked team in the country.

Every team is going to give Clark and the Hawkeyes their best shot to knock off a heavyweight contender. Up next on the menu includes a trip to Purdue followed up by a primetime matchup at home against the Indiana Hoosiers.
