Social media reacts as No. 5 Iowa women’s basketball flexes muscles in second half vs. Nebraska

Caitlin Clark put on another showcase performance with 38 points and Iowa rolled away from Nebraska, 92-73. Social media loved what it saw.

Stress-free victories are the best victories for the Iowa Hawkeyes. Of course, this is obvious. Everyone wants to see their team win with ease. Nobody wants to watch a game dwindle down, wondering if they’re going to do enough to overcome the opposition.

You always want to see your team handle their business with ease, especially coming off a tough loss such as the Hawkeyes’ 100-92 defeat at the hands of Ohio State.

That next game is arguably more important than the initial loss, as one can surely snowball into two, three, and so on. Iowa needed to get their swagger back, hit the ground running, find their stride, or whatever cliche you think best applies to the situation. They did just that, defeating Nebraska, 92-73.

While wins like this are obviously great, there’s another perk that comes with games like this. It’s a great reminder, without the stress of hoping the team can pull the win out, that Caitlin Clark is something we’ve never seen before.

Another monster performance for Clark with 38 points, 10 rebounds, six assists. And it just feels so normal for her. Drink it in while you can. This isn’t going to last forever.

Hawkeye social media was certainly drinking it all in. Here are the best reactions to Clark’s masterful performance and the Hawkeyes’ big win over Nebraska.

Caitlin Clark’s sports card bidding is nearing record-setting numbers

Everyone wants a piece of the Caitlin Clark history. The Iowa Hawkeyes point guard is seeing her sports card near record-setting bids.

Where were you when Caitlin Clark became the most famous female collegiate basketball player of all-time? It is a fair question to pose and one that may be closer to being a reality than a hyperbole.

The Iowa Hawkeyes point guard is smashing records and is hunting down the all-time scoring record held by Kelsey Plum. Caitlin Clark is on track to take it down in the regular season and is gaining much attention.

What is also gaining attention is every arena Clark steps into. She sells out everywhere she goes like a modern-day version of the Beatles. Entering the party is memorabilia associated with the superstar.

Caitlin Clark’s one-of-a-kind sports card is hitting stratospheric bidding levels. The card is currently bidding at $66,000 with that number sure to rise. This is currently the second most expensive women’s sports card sale of all-time.

Clark only trails Serena Williams, arguably the most famous female athlete of all-time. She is among some of the biggest names in women’s sports such as U.S. soccer legend Mia Hamm and Naomi Osaka, a powerhouse in the tennis world.

Caitlin Clark turns heads every time she steps onto the court. She draws in fans from all different ages and walks of life to see her play. She has the Iowa Hawkeyes to an 18-2 record this season and tracking for another deep NCAA Tournament run which will give fans many more chances to watch a truly one-of-a-kind athlete.

Iowa Hawkeyes hold top line in CBS Sports’ Women’s NCAA Tournament bracketology

The Iowa Hawkeyes aren’t going anywhere. That may be why CBS Sports has them on the top line in their women’s NCAA Tournament bracketology.

With an 18-2 record overall and a 7-1 record in Big Ten play, the Iowa Hawkeyes are just fine. They have the entire season in the palms of their hands with every goal fully in their control.

One of Iowa’s goals this year is to not only return to the NCAA Tournament but make another deep run just as they did last year. That starts with seeding. It goes without saying, but the higher the seed, the easier the path.

In CBS Sports’ newest women’s bracketology update, the Hawkeyes are still holding on the top line as a projected No. 1 seed.

Iowa (18-2, 7-1 Big Ten): NET 6, SOS 16

Caitlin Clark, Iowa’s #22 who turned 22 Monday, hasn’t slowed down in her takeover of not just women’s basketball, but all of college sports. Now on pace to break Kelsey Plum’s Division I women’s career scoring record in six games (which would be Feb. 15 vs Michigan), Clark’s 31.7 points per game this season is the most since Andrea Congreaves’ 33.0 PPG for Mercer in the 1991-92 season. The Hawkeyes lost in the national championship last season but are more than capable of doing one better this time around. – Connor Groel, CBS Sports

Iowa is also the highest NET-ranked team in the Big Ten at this point and is projecting as an automatic bid which is nearly a foregone conclusion at this point.

The other No. 1 seeds include South Carolina, Stanford, and UCLA. On the No. 2 seed line is UConn, Colorado, Kansas State, and North Carolina State.

USA TODAY Sports Coaches Poll keeps Iowa Hawkeyes inside top 5

Despite the loss to Ohio State, the USA TODAY Sports Coaches Poll knows who the Iowa Hawkeyes are and kept them inside the top 5.

Just one day after the AP Top 25 poll slid the Iowa Hawkeyes out of the top five to No. 6 in the nation, other outlets have them holding a spot in the top five despite the loss to Ohio State.

The USA TODAY Sports Coaches Poll has the Hawkeyes at No. 5 in the country in this week’s poll. This poll is telling as it comes from coaches across the country and they believe the Hawkeyes are still one of the top five teams in the country.

Sitting at 18-2 overall with a Big Ten conference record of 7-1, which still has the Hawkeyes in first place in the conference, Iowa is just fine. They have a chance to redeem their loss to Ohio State when they host the Buckeyes later this year and still have control of their own conference destiny.

Surrounding the Hawkeyes in these rankings are the usual suspects that have clustered together without much separation in records as they are all vying to be a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament.

Ahead of Iowa at No. 2 in Kansas State, a team they are 1-1 against. Colorado is No. 3, UCLA is No. 4, Stanford is tied with Iowa at No. 5, North Carolina State is No. 7, UConn is down at No. 8, LSU is No. 9, and USC rounds it out at No. 10 in the nation.

The Hawkeyes are back in action on Saturday, Jan. 27 at 1:00 p.m. CT when they host the Nebraska Cornhuskers.

Iowa Hawkeyes amid logjam in ESPN’s latest women’s basketball Power Rankings

After their first Big Ten loss of the year, the Iowa Hawkeyes find themselves amid a logjam in ESPN’s newest Power Rankings.

Sure, going undefeated is nice. But often, how a team rebounds after stumbling tells you much more about who they are than anything else. That is what the Iowa Hawkeyes face now and, if history tells us anything, a rebound back to their winnings ways is coming.

After a tough, overtime road loss at No. 12 Ohio State, the Hawkeyes dropped to No. 5 in the latest AP Top 25 women’s college basketball poll. Their other recent movement comes in ESPN’s newest Power Rankings following this past week’s games. Iowa dropped three spots to No. 6 in ESPN’s newest Power Rankings.

6. Iowa Hawkeyes (18-2)
Previous ranking:
 3
This week: vs. Nebraska Cornhuskers (Saturday)

The Hawkeyes appeared in good shape for their 16th win in a row, but the game got away from them in the fourth quarter at Ohio State, leading to an overtime loss. Hannah Stuelke, who missed Iowa’s win over Wisconsin with an injury Tuesday, seemed a bit rusty and was 4-of-12 from the field. Clark had 45 points — her 11th career game of 40 points or more. The Hawkeyes made the most of learning from their only other loss, Nov. 16 vs. Kansas State. We’ll see if they do the same with this. – Michael Voepel, ESPN

The logjam around the Hawkeyes begins at No. 3 with the Colorado Buffaloes who also have two losses. It continues to be a bit congested after that. Kansas State, who suffered their only loss versus the Hawkeyes, is at No. 4, UConn who has three losses is No. 5 and the defending national champion LSU Tigers are lingering right behind Iowa at No. 7.

The group is loaded with star power in the likes of Jaylyn Sherrod, Ayoka Lee when she returns from injury, Caitlin Clark, Angel Reese, and Paige Bueckers.

There is no shortage of talent in this bunch. It is sure to stay congested until the 2024 NCAA Tournament, which always finds a way of matching these top teams against each other.

Iowa Hawkeyes slide to No. 5 in latest AP Top 25 Women’s College Basketball Poll

Iowa dropped a tough one at Ohio State and saw a slide to No. 5 in the newest Associated Press Top 25 women’s college basketball poll.

A road loss to the Ohio State Buckeyes in overtime isn’t the worst loss for the Iowa Hawkeyes. The Buckeyes are now ranked No. 12 in the latest Associated Press Top 25 women’s college basketball poll, seeing a six-spot jump following their win.

Alternatively, the Hawkeyes saw a three-spot slide to No. 5 in the newest poll after they fell to 18-2 overall with a 7-1 mark in Big Ten play, which is still in first place.

Iowa’s 100-92 loss to the Buckeyes came after giving up a 12-point lead late. The Hawkeyes’ late-game woes gave Ohio State momentum and led to their flurry of overtime points that did Iowa in.

Ahead of Iowa currently are No. 1 South Carolina (17-0), No. 2 UCLA (15-1), No. 3 Colorado (16-2), and No. 4 Kansas State (18-1). Iowa has split the season series 1-1 with Kansas State.

The Hawkeyes see a week off as they do not get back on the court until Saturday, Jan. 27, when they host the Nebraska Cornhuskers at home inside Carver-Hawkeye Arena.

The mini-break and time off come at a good time for the Hawkeyes as they were in a bit of a gauntlet of Big Ten play and appeared to be running on fumes toward the end of the game against Ohio State.

Iowa does get a chance for revenge against the Buckeyes in the season finale. The Hawkeyes will host Ohio State on Sunday, March 3 to wrap up the regular season.

Takeaways as No. 15 Ohio State storms past No. 2 Iowa in OT

The Ohio State Buckeyes landed a haymaker. Takeaways as they took down Caitlin Clark and the Iowa Hawkeyes in front of a capacity crowd.

The No. 15 Ohio State Buckeyes welcomed in the No. 2 Iowa Hawkeyes to Columbus, Ohio, to a sellout crowd of over 18,000 fans with their eyes set on landing a haymaker. The Buckeyes landed a knockout punch on the Hawkeyes with a 100-92 victory in overtime.

Iowa guard Caitlin Clark did all she could for the Hawkeyes, scoring nearly half of their team total. But, she could only keep things close for so long. The Buckeyes eventually got things going down the stretch with forward Cotie McMahon taking over and dominating in the paint on her way to a career day.

Iowa forced things into overtime at 83-83, but eventually ran out of gas and the heavy legs took over. The Buckeyes pulled away in overtime, outscoring Iowa 17-9 in the extra period.

As the Hawkeyes get ready to get back on track and right the ship, here are some of the takeaways from Iowa’s first loss in Big Ten conference play.

CBS Sports tabs Iowa Hawkeyes at Ohio State one of the games of the week

Another road test awaits Iowa. The Hawkeyes trip to take on the Ohio State Buckeyes checks in as one of CBS Sports’ games of the week.

At this point, every week is a big week for the Iowa Hawkeyes women’s basketball team. It carries a big target each time it steps on the court be it inside Carver-Hawkeye Arena or on the road in Big Ten play in front of a sellout crowd.

This week Iowa takes on two Big Ten squads as it seeks to keep an  undefeated conference record. First, the Hawkeyes welcome the Wisconsin Badgers.

Following that, Iowa hits the road to Columbus for a matchup against the Ohio State Buckeyes on Sunday, Jan. 21. This matchup has cracked CBS Sports’ games of the week. Iowa is 6-0 in Big Ten play while Ohio State is 4-1.

No. 2 Iowa at No. 18 Ohio State | Sunday, Jan. 21, 12 p.m. | Peacock/NBC: The Hawkeyes jumped to No. 2 in the AP Top 25 poll this week after a 84-57 win over then-No. 14 Indiana. The Iowa offense relies heavily on Caitlin Clark, but more players are starting to share the responsibility, which is making the team stronger. Since 1999, Ohio State has a 22-14 advantage over Iowa, but the Buckeyes have lost the last two encounters. Iowa will have to be careful with the ball as Ohio State is forcing over 21 turnovers per game. – Isabel Gonzalez, CBS Sports

This is the first of two matchups between the Hawkeyes and Buckeyes. Their second game, which Iowa hosts, is the regular-season finale on March 3.

The two last met in last year’s Big Ten Tournament championship game won handily by the Hawkeyes, 105-72. Iowa also downed the Buckeyes last year in Columbus, 83-72, during the regular season.

Freight Train: Takeaways as the Iowa Hawkeyes roll against Wisconsin Badgers

Riding a high, the Iowa Hawkeyes could have been caught off guard. They didn’t blink. Takeaways as they rolled over Wisconsin.

A big win against the Indiana Hoosiers on Saturday undoubtedly had the Iowa Hawkeyes riding high and feeling confident after their best show yet.

That could have led to a sluggish performance against the Wisconsin Badgers or even turned into a trap game with a big game at Ohio State Buckeyes this weekend.

Rather than fall victim to that, the Hawkeyes came out and demolished the Badgers, 96-50, to complete the season sweep of the Big Ten rival. The Hawkeyes started a tad slowly; they led 21-16 in the second quarter.

The margin ballooned to 46-28 before halftime, and Iowa never looked back. Here are some takeaways from the strong home performance that looked exactly like what a title contender is supposed to do on its homecourt in a game it should routinely win.

Big Ten Record: Caitlin Clark wins 4th-straight, 25th overall, BIG Player of the Week

She is truly unbelievable and like no other before. Caitlin Clark has won her 4th-straight, and 25th overall, B1G Player of the Week award.

Caitlin Clark is knocking down records one after another like they are 3-pointers in an open gym. The Iowa Hawkeyes point guard has set yet another record, this time it is for the Big Ten Conference.

In what is her fourth-straight week being named the Big Ten Player of the Week, Clark also set the Big Ten record for being named the conference player of the week 25 times total, with more likely to come.

Caitlin Clark has the Iowa Hawkeyes ranked No. 2 in the AP Top 25 poll right now and trending towards a No. 1 seed in the latest NCAA Women’s Tournament bracketology.

Next for Clark is a home game welcoming in the Wisconsin Badgers followed by a Sunday road trip to take on the No. 18 Ohio State Buckeyes in front of a packed house.

On the year, Iowa’s all-time leading scorer is averaging 30.9 points per game while shooting 48.2% from the field and 39.9% from three-point range. Clark is also adding in 7.9 assists and 7.2 rebounds per game.

The Iowa native is putting on a clinic unseen before in women’s basketball and continues to put on a show each night for arenas full of fans, young girls who admire her, and all fans of basketball.
