Iowa at Illinois odds, picks and prediction

Analyzing Sunday’s Iowa at Illinois odds and lines, with college basketball expert picks, predictions and best bets.

The No. 25 Iowa Hawkeyes (22-8, 12-7 Big Ten) visit the State Farm Center to take on the No. 17 Illinois Fighting Illini (21-8, 14-5). Tip is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. ET. Below, we look at the Iowa vs. Illinois odds and lines, and make our expert college basketball picks, predictions and bets.

Iowa has covered 4 of its last 6 games and 6 of its last 8. On the season, the Hawkeyes are 18-12 against the spread (ATS).

Iowa is led by F Keegan Murray, who is averaging 23.3 points per game. As a team, the Hawkeyes average 83.6 points per game, fifth-best in the nation. Iowa is just 6-5 straight up on the road.

While Iowa’s season-long ATS record is the best in the conference, it is just 10-9 ATS in Big Ten games. Illinois, however, is 9-10 ATS in conference games.

The Fighting Illini are 12-3 at home this season, but just 7-7 as a home favorite. Illinois averages 76.3 points per game, good for 53rd-best in the nation.

Iowa at Illinois odds, lines, picks and predictions

Prediction

Illinois 80, Iowa 78

Money line

PASS.

Illinois should come out on top, but at -190, I wouldn’t bet on it. They do have 3 losses at home as well. On the other hand, Iowa is 1-4 straight up against ranked opponents.

I’d stay away from the money line in general.

Against the spread

“LEAN” to IOWA +3.5 (-110).

Iowa has been far better at covering this season than Illinois.

The Hawkeyes are 18-12 ATS on the season as compared to the Fighting Illini’s 13-16 ATS. Illinois is just 2-5 ATS over its last 7 and has also failed to cover its last 3 home games.

Iowa is coming off an 11-point win as road underdogs against Michigan. The Hawkeyes are also 6-5 ATS on the road.

Illinois has its fourth-leading scorer G Jacob Grandison listed as questionable as well, so if he can’t play, someone will need to step up offensively.

Over/Under

BET on the OVER 154.5 (-110).

Both Illinois (70.3) and Iowa (72.6) rank in the top half of the nation in possessions per game.

Both teams should be looking to get out and run, especially Iowa, which sits top 68th in possessions per game and will look to tire out Illinois big man  Kofi Cockburn. The Illini center averages 21 points and 10.5 rebounds per game.

Murray leads the Hawkeyes in rebounds per game, and he stands just 6-foot-8. Iowa’s five top minutes leaders all are under 6-foot-10. I expect Cockburn to be able to dominant as well as potentially be exposed defensively.

Iowa is 19-10-1 O/U while Illinois is 17-11-1 O/U this season.

Iowa vs. Illinois odds, picks and prediction

Previewing Saturday’s Iowa Hawkeyes vs. Illinois Fighting Illini odds and lines, with college basketball betting picks and predictions.

The No. 6 Iowa Hawkeyes (21-7, 14-6 Big 10) play the No. 3 Illinois Fighting Illini (21-6, 16-4) Saturday in the semifinals of the Big 10 Men’s College Basketball Tournament in Indianapolis. Tip-off is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. ET. Below, we analyze the Iowa-Illinois odds and lines, with NCAA college basketball picks and predictions.

  • Money line: Iowa +150 (bet $100 to win $150) | Illinois -185 (bet $185 to win $100)
  • Against the spread/ATS: Iowa +4.5 (-115) | Illinois -4.5 (-105)
  • Over/Under: 155.5 (O: -110 | U: -110)

Iowa vs. Illinois: Three things to know

  1. Iowa defeated Wisconsin in back-to-back games including by a 62-57 count in the Big 10 tourney quarterfinals. Iowa pushed on the spread as a 5-point favorite. The Hawkeyes won eight of their last nine games (5-3-1 ATS) with the only loss being a 22-point whooping by then-No. 3 Michigan Feb. 25.
  2. Illinois demolished Rutgers 90-68 yesterday for its fifth consecutive win and cover. The Fighting Illini have won 12 of their last 13 games by an average score of 78.8-67.8, which includes an 80-75 home victory over the Hawkeyes as 3-point favorites in late January.
  3. Prior to the Fighting Illini’s win and ATS victory over the Hawkeyes Jan. 29, Iowa covered the spread in three of four games and won five of six outright.

Iowa vs. Illinois: Odds, lines, predictions and picks

Prediction

Illinois 82, Iowa 75

Money line (ML)

PASS on taking Illinois (-185) straight up but I wouldn’t hate including the Fighting Illini’s money line in a parlay with Wichita State or Arkansas for a plus-money payout.

Play our new free daily Pick’em Challenge and win! Play now!

Against the spread (ATS)

There are very few teams in the nation with a big capable of making Iowa’s Wooden Award finalist Luka Garza work like Illinois C Kofi Cockburn can.

Garza is the only player in the Big 10 with a higher PER than Cockburn and Cockburn leads the conference in effective field-goal percentage and rebounds per game. Also, Cockburn has a better defensive rating and more defensive win shares than Garza.

And we haven’t even mentioned the Fighting Illini’s other All-Big 10 first-team player, G Ayo Dosunmu, who joins Garza and Cockburn as a Wooden Award finalist.

BET ILLINOIS -4.5 (-105) for 1 unit.

Over/Under (O/U)

Both teams play at an above-average pace and shoot the ball exceptionally well, but turn their opponents over at a very low rate.

I can only lean OVER 155.5 (-110) for a tiny wager if at all because the Hawkeyes have gone Under in eight of their last 10 games, and three of the previous four Iowa-Illinois games have gone Under.

Plus, the Fighting Illini’s offense has the 20th-best FTA/FG rate while the Hawkeyes are seventh in defensive FTA/FG rate, according to Ken Pom.

Lastly, Illinois’ 37th-ranked defensive 3-points per field-goal attempt rate should make it difficult for an Iowa team ninth in 3-point percentage to get quality looks.

The No. 7 Iowa Hawkeyes (12-4, 6-2 Big Ten) visit the 22nd-ranked Illinois Fighting Illini (10-5, 6-3) Friday for a 9 p.m. ET tip-off. Below, we analyze the Iowa-Illinois college basketball odds and lines, with picks and predictions.

Rankings courtesy of the Ferris Mowers Coaches Poll powered by USA TODAY Sports.

Iowa at Illinois: Odds, spread and lines

  • Money line: Iowa +115 (bet $100 to win $115) | Illinois -140 (bet $140 to win $100)
  • Against the spread/ATS: Iowa +2.5 (-115) | Illinois -2.5 (-105)
  • Over/Under: 161.5 (O: -110 | U: -110)

Iowa at Illinois: Three things to know

  1. Iowa has had a full week off after getting upset as a 10-point home favorite by Indiana 81-69 Jan. 21. The Hawkeyes’ following game, Sunday vs. Nebraska, was postponed due to COVID-19 issues within the Cornhuskers program. C Luka Garza leads the country in scoring at 26.9 points per game with a team-best 8.9 rebounds per game. Senior G Jordan Bohannon, who was held scoreless in the Hoosiers loss, leads the Hawkeyes in made 3-pointers (39) and assists (4.7 APG).
  2. Meanwhile, Illinois returns to action for the first time in 10 days. The Illini snapped a 2-game skid with a 79-65 victory as a 10-point favorite vs. Penn State Jan. 19 but had last Saturday’s game at Michigan State postponed because of COVID-19 issues within the MSU program. Junior G Ayo Dosunmu leads the Illini in scoring (21.7 PPG) and assists (4.9 APG), while sophomore C Kofi Cockburn is the team’s top rebounder (10.3).
  3. Illinois ended a 5-game losing streak in the Iowa series with a 78-76 home victory March 8, 2020. Dosunmu scored a team-high 17 points for the Illini, while Garza tallied a game-high 28 points for the Hawkeyes.

Iowa at Illinois: Odds, lines, predictions and picks

Prediction

Iowa 81, Illinois 77

Money line (ML)

IOWA (+115) is the STRONGEST PLAY – 1½ times your usual wager.  The Hawkeyes will be chomping at the bit after having to think about the Indiana loss for eight days.

Against the Hoosiers, the Hawkeyes didn’t hit a field goal for an 11-minute stretch while blowing a 53-44 second-half lead. They finished shooting 21.7% (5-for-23) behind the 3-point line with Bohannon going 0-for-8. That won’t happen again.

Against the spread (ATS)

AVOID unless you prefer to take the insurance of 2.5 points with the Hawkeyes instead of backing their money line for an outright win.

ATS: Iowa 10-5 | Illinois 8-6-1

Over/Under (O/U)

UNDER 161.5 (-110) is worth a HALF-UNIT bet. The rivals are the Big Ten’s highest-scoring teams, but both haven’t played in at least seven days and some early rust out of the gate should be expected.

Iowa ranks second in the nation at 90.7 PPG, but the average drops 7.1 points to 83.6 PPG in Big Ten action. Illinois averages 82.9 PPG overall and 79.7 PPG in conference games.

O/U records: Iowa 10-5 | Illinois 9-6
