Penn State gets high marks after elite prospect’s official visit

Penn State is doing everything it can to win a recruiting battle against Iowa in the Class of 2025 for this key four-star target.

There were a lot of things going on for Penn State in Happy Valley this past weekend. Not only was the town hosting the Elite 11 regionals where top quarterbacks across the country came to try and stamp their ticket to the prestigious final event, but they were also hosting their first official visit in the 2025 class.

Originally, [autotag]James Franklin[/autotag] and his staff weren’t going to have officials start until the last weekend of May, but when one of their top targets, [autotag]Iose Epenesa[/autotag], couldn’t make any of the dates on the calendar, they created a new one just for him.

That comes with good reason as well.

The consensus four-star edge rusher is ranked as the 34th-best player in the country and No. 3 at his position according to On3’s Industry Rankings.

Viewed as a longshot in his recruitment, the Nittany Lions were presented with an opportunity to put themselves into consideration when Epenesa gets ready to announce his commitment.

It sounds like they did just that after some information came out following his trip to Happy Valley.

In a conversation with Steve Wiltfong of On3, he called his experience “great” and “a pleasant surprise.” When expanding further, the 2025 recruit said he wasn’t too familiar with the Nittany Lions prior to this trip but came away impressed with the family atmosphere and the state of the program because former players come back to visit and coach. As far as his fit, he thinks he can succeed based on how Penn State utilizes his defensive ends (subscription required).

That’s a great sign for the Nittany Lions.

All they can hope for is that they did enough to put themselves in serious contention as he goes through the remainder of his official visits.

On3’s Recruiting Prediction Machine has Iowa as the favorite to land him, which should come as no surprise considering his older brother A.J. played for the Hawkeyes.

However, Epenesa’s family came out of the trip impressed as well. They told Wiltfong they “had a great time” and liked what they saw from the facilities, coaching staff, strength coach, and academics.

It still seems like an uphill battle for Penn State, but it will be interesting to see where this recruitment goes as he gets closer to his commitment date.

Penn State creates official visit date for coveted 2025 recruit

Penn State will host a key defensive recruiting target next weekend.

It’s going to be a busy and important summer for [autotag]James Franklin[/autotag] and his staff as Penn State looks to land some of their priority recruits in the class of 2025.

With many official visits already locked in, they’re hoping that they can start to lock in commitments and wrap up another solid class that keeps this program on the right foot heading into the expanded College Football Playoff era.

Originally, official visit season wasn’t scheduled to start until May 31, but that changed as one of their coveted recruits couldn’t make any of the dates work for his schedule.

So, instead of losing out on the opportunity to have an elite edge rusher visit campus, Penn State created a whole new date.

Sean Fitz of On3 reported that the Nittany Lions will host four-star [autotag]Iose Epenesa[/autotag] on May 18. It will be the first official visit for the Illinois native has he’s set to also see Missouri, Iowa, Utah and Miami (subscription required).

Epenesa is rated as the 20th-best player in the country and No. 3 at his position according to 247Sports.

He has a strong bloodline as his older brother is A.J. Epenesa who plays for the Buffalo Bills. But, that bloodline might also make this a tough one for Penn State to get home as his two brothers and father played at Iowa.

Still, it’s important to bring these types of players to campus and it’s great that Franklin and everyone involved were able to get something worked out.

Epenesa would be a great addition to the Nittany Lions as they will be looking for impact players to be the next faces of the defensive line following the NFL departures of [autotag]Chop Robinson[/autotag] and [autotag]Adisa Isaac[/autotag] in 2024 and presumably [autotag]Abdul Carter[/autotag] and [autotag]Dani Dennis-Sutton[/autotag] following this year.

Michigan football makes top 10 for elite 2025 edge rusher

The brother of AJ Epenesa is strongly considering the Michigan Wolverines as his potential school of the future.

With the annual spring game now in the rear view, Michigan football can focus more fully on recruiting. And it appears to be making some headway.

The Wolverines have yet to get a commitment in the year 2024, but that could change in a hurry now that the maize and blue have the coaching staff set in stone and are fully in preparation for the upcoming season. One prospect that appears to be giving Michigan a strong look is 2025 Edwardsville (Ill.) four-star edge rusher Iose Epenesa, who is ranked No. 20 overall, regardless of position, according to the 247Sports’ proprietary rankings. And on Sunday, his top 10 was revealed, and the Wolverines are a contender for his services.

Of course Iowa made the cut, as his brother — former five-star EDGE AJ Epenesa — starred at the program, as did his father, Eppy. Miami, Kentucky, Missouri, Utah, Oregon, Penn State, Illinois, and Texas also made the cut.

The scouting report per 247Sports’ Allen Trieu:

Played both sides of the ball as a freshman, but future is most likely as a defensive lineman. Has a varied athletic background that includes throwing in track and field and basketball. Runs well and can chase down plays. Gets off the snap and can win with a speed rush. Looking at his genetics and early growth potential, he is likely to be a big college end but will have the athleticism to stay on the edge like his brother. Projects out as a high-major player.

247Sports lists Epenesa as the top-rated player in the state of Illinois and the third-best defensive lineman.

Auburn offers 5-star defensive lineman Iose Epenesa

It will be tough to pull him away from Iowa where his dad and older brothers both played but Hugh Freeze and Auburn are giving it a shot.

Five-star defensive lineman [autotag]Iose Epenesa[/autotag] may come from an Iowa Hawkeye family but the Auburn Tigers are making a run at him. The Tigers extended an offer to the 2025 prospect on Monday.

His father Eppy, who announced the news, and his brother AJ both played at Iowa while his brother Eric is currently a walk-on for Iowa. AJ is currently a defensive end for the Buffalo Bills.

Epenesa is the No. 10 overall player and No. 3 defensive lineman in the 247Sports Composite ranking. He is also the No. 1 player from Illinois.

Checking in at 6-foot-4 and 230 pounds he projects as a defensive end or edge defender over an interior player. He made 46 tackles, 13.0 tackles for loss, and 5.0 sacks Edwardsville High School as a sophomore
