Watch: This amateur made the cut at Valspar Championship with his brother on the bag, and dad’s reaction is priceless

Dad’s reaction is everything.

It’s safe to say it has been a special week for the Gabrelcik family at the Valspar Championship.

Nick, a junior at North Florida, is playing in his first PGA Tour event at Innisbrook’s Copperhead Course in Palm Harbor, Florida, on a sponsor exemption. During Friday’s second round, he birdied four of his first five holes and ended up shooting 4-under 67 to make the cut at even-par 142.

“It’s an awesome feeling making my first cut,” Nick said.

With his brother, Donnie, on the bag, it was a special round for Nick, who last week was one of 15 men’s college golfers named to the Haskins Award spring watch list. Yet the day was even more special for Nick and Donnie’s father, Don, who was emotional as the two finished the second round on Friday.

“I wasn’t expecting everybody out here to be waiting behind the grandstands to cheer me on,” Nick said. “It was just a feeling that I don’t think I will ever experience again because you don’t get a first Tour event ever and you don’t get a first cut all the time. So it’s just really special to me.

“I think my dad could arguably be having more fun than I am with all of this, the experience, being inside the ropes. But it’s just a blast having everybody here.”

Matt Fitzpatrick leads the list of big names heading home early from the Valspar Championship

The reigning U.S. Open champion was among those who missed the cut outside Tampa.

The Valspar Championship at Innsbrook’s Copperhead Course in Palm Harbor, Florida, already lacked a slew of stars due to its place in the PGA Tour schedule (four of the five events leading up to the Valspar were designated, with another one coming next week).

And after the Friday cut was made, a few of the stars who did tee it up didn’t play well enough to earn a Saturday tee time.

Matt Fitzpatrick, who’s struggled with his game much of 2023, leads the list. The 13th-ranked player in the world is in the field for next week’s WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play in Austin, Texas.

Here are some of the names who missed the cut of 1-over 143 at the Valspar Championship.

Former NFL star Rob Gronkowski on meeting Tiger Woods, Shooter McGavin and what he’d serve at his Masters Champions Dinner

“An ice-cold beverage inside, just getting a little tipsy at all times, baby.”

Rob Gronkowski isn’t much of a golfer, but he’s having himself a day at the Valspar Championship.

On Friday, Gronk answered a few questions from the media at Innsbrook’s Copperhead Course, and by the sound of it he’s loving it in Palm Harbor, Florida.

“So I came to the Valspar last year and just had a wonderful time,” he said. “What’s so special about it is you get to watch some golf, but at the same time, this place is so awesome. I was also playing cornhole while watching everyone play golf. So I got to do some activities because I love activities. I won some games in cornhole versus — some of the Lightning guys, actually I beat them in cornhole.

“It’s just awesome.”

As for playing golf, Gronk doesn’t get out that much — but he does have lofty goals.

“I probably played about one round total of golf in the past six years,” he said. “I’ve been playing a lot of the golf simulators back up north. I’ve been getting better. Let me tell you, those golf simulators, they’re the real deal. I feel like they’re very accurate actually.

“There’s one thing I love to do is putt-putt. But I’m telling you right now, I’m just really young still, been living the fast life, but I’m starting to calm down more and I feel like golf is going to be one of my games in the future. I will be playing in pro-ams eventually. I would say I’m going to be a par guy one day. About 15 years I’ll be shooting par.”

Gronk has yet to spend time with many current PGA Tour players, but he has had a few brushes with golf greatness through the years.

“I actually never really met any professional golf players ever. I really haven’t. Not in person, no. I met Tiger Woods one time real quick. He was in the big golf tournament up in New England and he was working out at our facility,” Gronkowski said. “Oh, yeah, and he just walked by, and I said, What up, Tiger? And he said, What up, Gronk? I shook his hand. So that’s the only professional guy I’ve ever met, I’m pretty sure.

“But I did meet Shooter McGavin before, actually, and if you ask me, he’s the No. 1 most professional golf guy ever. I met Shooter.”

[pickup_prop id=”31984″]

With the Masters coming up in a few weeks, Gronk was asked what would be on his menu if he was hosting the Champions Dinner.

“My menu would be cheeseburgers, chicken finger subs, Buffalo wings with blue cheese on the side, and of course my lovely ice shaker right here with an ice cold beverage inside, just getting a little tipsy at all times, baby,” he said.

If you’re in the mood for a laugh, watch this PGA Tour pro flail every limb on his body as he falls after a bunker shot

This is laugh-out-loud funny.

This is why people say golf is a hobby, not a sport.

Cameron Percy, 48, found a tough lie on the par-3 fourth at Innisbrook’s Copperhead Course in Palm Harbor, Florida, during the second round of the Valspar Championship.

Percy took his stance with one foot in the bunker and the other on the lip. After a big whack at what looked like a plugged lie, the Aussie seemed to lose control of all limbs.

Arms flying around, feet coming off the ground until his body plopped onto the grass.

I’m not sure he could have fallen in a funnier way.

Valspar Championship: Jordan Spieth’s putter wakes up, Tommy Fleetwood chasing breakthrough win and more from Day 1

Everything you need to know from the first round of the Valspar Championship.

It was a busy day at Innisbrook Resort’s Copperhead Course for the first round of the Valspar Championship in Palm Harbor, Florida.

Jordan Spieth got off to a hot start thanks to his putter — we’ll cover that in a minute — while Ryan Brehm used an ace at the par-3 17th to vault to the top of the leaderboard at 5 under. Stephan Jaeger and Adam Schenk sit with Brehm after matching 66s.

Maverick McNealy, who is still searching for his first win on the PGA Tour, opened with a 4-under 67. This is McNealy’s first trip to Innisbrook, but he’s been impressed with the golf course so far.

“I’ve heard from so many players that this is just a fantastic golf course,” he said after his round. “I’m a West Coast guy, I’ve played, usually play a heavy West Coast Swing and Florida’s usually a little different but everyone kept saying, this doesn’t feel like a Florida golf course. I got out here and I saw pictures. It kind of looks like the golf course I grew up at, Sharon Heights and Stanford back in the Bay Area.”

We’ll see if those hometown feels carry him to success the rest of the way.

Sam Burns, who’s looking to win outside Tampa for the third year in a row, opened with a 2-under 69, as did Justin Thomas. Thomas finished one shot out of the playoff last season and 13th in 2021.

“I think for me it’s just trying to put together a solid week and a lot of winning is out of my control,” Burns said after signing his card. “So I just try to go out there and play the best that I can and add it up at the end.”

If you missed the action Thursday, no worries, we have you covered. Here’s everything you need to know from the first round of the Valspar Championship.

Matt Fitzpatrick’s mishap leads to U.S. Open champion carding a 9 at Valspar Championship

It’s a beautiful day at Innisbrook Resort’s Copperhead Course unless your Matt Fitzpatrick’s scorecard.

It’s a beautiful day at Innisbrook Resort’s Copperhead Course unless you’re Matt Fitzpatrick’s scorecard.

When Fitzpatrick, who tracks his every shot, reviews his first round at the Valspar Championship in Palm Harbor, Florida, he’s going to be none too happy when he gets to the par-4, 417-yard third hole. That’s where he made a nine.

Fitzpatrick started with a birdie at the first hole, but the nightmare at the third started on the tee shot, where his ball headed left and deep into the trees. Fitzpatrick reloaded and hit a beauty. But when he got down there, it turned out a fan located a ball that may have been Fitzpatrick’s. He didn’t want to check it and called a rules official to ask if he had to look at the ball. He was told he had to, and unfortunately it was Fitzpatrick’s ball. Given that he still had no swing even if he had taken an unplayable lie and he could no longer play his provisional since he found his original ball, he decided his best option was to return to the tee. He made the walk of shame back to the tee and re-teed, hitting three.

But it only got worse from there for Fitzpatrick, the reigning U.S. Open champion, as he hit his next shot into a lake. He dropped near the penalty area and his fifth shot landed in the rough short of the green and he needed two more chips to reach the putting surface. He missed a 13-footer for a snowman and tapped in for a quintuple-bogey nine.

Fitzpatrick went on to bogey the next two holes, too. Snakebit on Thursday and he hadn’t event reached the Snake Pit (holes 16-18) yet. Fitzpatrick ended up shooting 42 on the front nine but improved 10 strokes on the back nine to shoot 3-over 74.

It’s been a tough stretch for Fitzpatrick, No. 13 in the world, who missed the cut last week at the Players Championship, and has dug himself a hole that could lead to his third missed cut in four starts unless he gets his act together.

Valspar Championship: Jordan Spieth’s best putting performance since May 2021 resulted in a bogey-free 67

When Jordan Spieth’s putter warms up, watch out.

When Jordan Spieth’s putter warms up, watch out.

On Thursday, the 29-year-old three-time major champion poured in 147 feet, nine inches of putts to spark a 4-under 67 at Innisbrook Resort’s Copperhead Course in Palm Harbor, Florida.

“I felt like I made a few really nice par saves from that 4- to 8-foot range that kept that round alive,” Spieth said. “Bogey-free around this track is not something you’re going to do every day. So very pleased with it.”

It wasn’t just the clutch par putts that were falling during the first round for Spieth. He gained more than four strokes to the field on the greens, reeling off three birdies in a row starting at No. 14, his fifth hole of the day, and adding another at the sixth after flaring his drive to the right and into the trees.

“When I struck the tee ball, it’s just a crap shoot,” he said. “I stole another on No. 6, with a pretty good break.”

Spieth had a decent lie and a swing and sliced a gap wedge, managing to hit his second shot to 32 feet and sinking the putt.

“Does he ever do anything conventionally?” asked PGA Tour Live commentator Will MacKenzie.

That wasn’t even the longest putt of the day for Spieth, who drained a 58-foot birdie putt at the par-3 15th. Spieth ended the day a stroke off the lead shared by the trio of Ryan Brehm, who shot 66 with an ace at the par-3 17th, Stephen Jaeger and Adam Schenk, who joined them with the low score in the afternoon wave.

“I’m not comfortable out there at all, but I don’t think anybody really is,” Brehm said. “Maybe Sam Burns.”

Burns, 26, has been in a class all by himself the last two years at this event. He’s seeking a three-peat this week at the Valspar Championship and opened with 2-under 69, which actually was slightly above his tournament scoring average of 68.33 heading into this week.

“Winning is out of my control,” said Burns, who was pleased with his iron play in the first round. “I just try to go out there and play the best that I can and add it up at the end.”

Spieth is playing at a course that brings back fond memories for him too. A decade ago, a T-7 at this event was a launching pad to special temporary membership on the PGA Tour.

“That was huge,” he said. “That opened up all the opportunities for the rest of the year that kind of was a springboard for getting all the way to the Tour Championship and then the Presidents Cup and just really, really great memories that I wouldn’t have had if it weren’t for the finish to this event.”

Spieth also won at Innisbrook in a playoff in 2015. But he hasn’t played the Valspar Championship since 2018. Two years ago, he pulled out of the field ahead of the tournament due to COVID-19 and last year he had a conflict with his brother’s wedding being held the same weekend. Spieth is happy to be back and even more so after signing for a clean card where his putter was more friend than foe.

“With only hitting like five-ish fairways, you do that around this place and shoot under par, it’s pretty solid. I was able to sneak a couple extras with the putter today,” he said. “I need to tighten it up a little bit, we’ve got some wind coming tomorrow. Really good start, needed to get off to a good start with the weather (expected to worsen) Friday through the weekend.”
