Quickley made a strong case over his final two preseason games that he should be in the conversation to start for the Knicks this season. He gives the team instant energy on the court and that should be in consideration when head coach Tom Thibodeau settles on his starting lineup.

The Knicks will now have a few days off before the regular-season opener on Wednesday against the Indiana Pacers but the team should certainly be impressed by what they saw from Quickley and the rest of the young guys on the roster.

NBA Preseason: Killian Hayes, Obi Toppin among rookies to debut Friday

Rookie Wire took a look at those first-year players set to debut as the 2020 preseason schedule tips off on Friday.

On Friday, the NBA will tip-off its 2020-21 preseason schedule with five matchups set to take place around the league. Each team will play a minimum of two and a maximum of four games as part of the league’s 49-game preseason schedule.

Most teams have participated in training camp now for over a week in preparation for the season. Some players have had several months off since last playing while others, such as those on the Los Angeles Lakers or Miami Heat, will experience the shortest turnaround between seasons in league history.

The stars of the league will likely play sparingly during the preseason but the slate of games will serve as an opportunity for rookies to log meaningful minutes as they transition to the NBA. Between the handful of games set to begin, several notable rookies will be in action on Friday night.

Rookie Wire took a look at those first-year players set to debut on Friday.

Tom Thibodeau: Toppin, Quickley among best conditioned in Knicks camp

Knicks head coach Tom Thibodeau praised rookies Obi Toppin and Immanuel Quickley in training camp so far.

New York Knicks first-round picks Obi Toppin and Immanuel Quickley are among the best-conditioned players so far in training camp, head coach Tom Thibodeau said on Thursday.

Toppin, the eighth overall pick, has worked extensively on his conditioning leading up to the start of the season. He has worked with Knicks assistant coach Kenny Payne and even set a team record for the best time in some of the conditioning drills.

Meanwhile, Quickley said on Wednesday that he thought the speed of the game was much faster than initially thought but has worked on adjusting to the pace. He seems to be making great progress in that area based on Thibodeau’s comments.

“Our two young guys, obviously, they have a lot to learn, but in terms of commitment and conditioning, they’re really impressive,” Thibodeau said. “The vets that have stood out the most are Julius [Randle] and Kevin Knox.”

Thibodeau added that, given the shortened offseason, some players will be in better shape than others and that it is still a work in progress. The Knicks have four preseason games and will develop a plan to gradually ramp up players ahead of the start of the regular season.

New York begins preseason play on Friday vs. the Detroit Pistons.
