Immanuel Quickley snaps cold streak to lead Knicks to comeback win

Quickley tied a team-high in scoring to help the Knicks overcome a 13-point fourth-quarter deficit to defeat the Grizzlies.

After struggling a bit coming into Friday night, Immanuel Quickley snapped a recent cold streak to help lead the New York Knicks to a comeback win over the Memphis Grizzlies.

Quickley tied a team-high with 20 points to go along with four rebounds and two assists as the Knicks erased a 13-point fourth-quarter deficit to defeat the Grizzlies in overtime, 133-129. Quickley converted on 7-of-12 shots from the field, including 4-of-6 from 3-point range, in 30 minutes of work.

Prior to Friday, Quickley was averaging just 5.2 points on 29.6% shooting from the field over his last five games. He scored in double figures only one time during that span, but stayed ready and hit some crucial shots to help the Knicks to victory.

Despite the recent skid by Quickley, the Knicks maintained their faith in the rookie and that ultimately helped him come up with a big game on Friday. On top of his scoring, he finished a game-high plus-19 on the court as he made his presence felt on both ends of the floor.

With the win, the Knicks kept their ground in the playoff race as they sit eighth in the Eastern Conference, one game up on the Indiana Pacers. The team will certainly be in a heated battle to lock up a playoff berth and will need contributions from every player to achieve that goal.

Rookie of the Year Race: Can LaMelo Ball win after injury?

Despite preseason expectations, basketball fans have seen surprisingly good campaigns from several rookies around the league in 2020-21.

Despite middling preseason expectations, basketball fans have seen some surprisingly good campaigns from several rookies around the league in 2020-21.

Even the most casual observer will know LaMelo Ball has had an excellent year. But there are many others who have played very well while on the floor as well. As such, this will be an exciting race for the 2021 NBA Rookie of the Year.

Like our weekly MVP rankings, every member of our team voted on their personal Top 10 rankings for Rookie of the Year. We averaged out the results to get a cumulative ranking from the HoopsHype staff.

Every month, we will release our updated rankings for the Rookie of the Year race.

All relevant statistics are accurate as of April 8, 2021 and are pulled from Basketball-Reference, RealGM or NBA.com unless noted otherwise.

Knicks’ Immanuel Quickley will not play on Thursday vs. Magic

After starting the past two games for the Knicks, Quickley was ruled out of playing on Thursday versus the Magic.

After earning the start in each of the past two games, New York Knicks rookie Immanuel Quickley was ruled out for Thursday’s game against the Orlando Magic with a sore left ankle.

The Knicks moved Quickley into the starting lineup on Monday with Elfrid Payton injured (sore hamstring) and Derrick Rose in the health and safety protocols. Quickley responded by scoring 21 points in that contest and 13 points on Tuesday, both losses.

Quickley likely suffered the injury on Tuesday versus the Philadelphia 76ers, but he was able to finish the contest. With Payton also out, the Knicks will likely turn to Frank Ntilikina in the starting lineup on Thursday versus the Magic.

The loss of Quickley will be a big blow for the Knicks as they face a banged-up Magic team. He gives the team a dynamic scoring option and now the Knicks will be forced to play on without him.

Note: This story was updated to include the latest playing status of Quickley.

Knicks’ Immanuel Quickley puts up 21 points in first career start

Quickley produced 13 points alone in the third quarter on Monday as the Knicks narrowly lost to the Nets.

On Monday, New York Knicks guard Immanuel Quickley earned his first career start and the rookie nearly helped lead his team to a victory over the Brooklyn Nets.

Quickley produced 21 points, two rebounds and two assists in 33 minutes of work during the 117-112 loss. He finished the contest by shooting 6-of-19 from the field, including 4-of-12 from 3-point range, and 5-of-7 from the free-throw line.

The 25th overall pick scored 13 points alone in the third quarter as the Knicks kept the score within reach before going on a bit of a run in the final period. New York cut the deficit to just four with two minutes left, but we were unable to get any closer.

Based on his play this season, a large contingent of Knicks fans have often called for Quickley to start and the performance on Monday certainly showed what he is capable of doing on the court. While the group lost, the change in the starting lineup could become permanent as the team looks to shake things up.

Rookie Wire Power Rankings: LaMelo Ball once again reigns supreme

Rookie Wire takes a look at the top first-year players over the last two weeks of the 2020-21 season.

With the NBA All-Star break nearly upon us, the first half of the season is in the books for most teams as the week off will provide an essential rest period for players.

Over the course of the first half of the season, several rookies have made strong contributions on a consistent basis and have emerged as some of the top players of the class. Others, seemingly have come on strong recently and are playing well in expanded roles.

To make sense of it all, we took a look at the best recent performances of these first-year players and ranked them in the latest edition of the Rookie Wire Power Rankings. The rankings are not for Rookie of the Year purposes but, rather, to illustrate the best players week to week.

PJ Tucker, Danuel House Jr. go scoreless in New York as Rockets lose fifth straight

John Wall and Eric Gordon combined for 50, but it wasn’t nearly enough in New York, thanks to an 8-of-43 night (18.6%) on 3-pointers.

Houston’s starting backcourt of John Wall (26 points, 4 assists) and Eric Gordon (24 points, 6 assists) combined for 50 points on 50% shooting on Saturday night in New York, but the Rockets still lost their fifth consecutive game, 121-99 (box score).

The Rockets (11-15) remained quite short-handed, with two of their top three scorers and defenders sidelined by injury. Looking ahead, the return timetables for big man Christian Wood (right ankle sprain) and guard Victor Oladipo (right foot strain) are not yet clear, though both players were with the Rockets on the first game of a three-game road trip.

Houston shot just 8-of-43 from 3-point range (18.6%) at Madison Square Garden, and veteran forwards PJ Tucker and Danuel House Jr. combined to score zero points for the game  Tucker started and went 0-for-4 in 31 minutes, while House was 0-for-8 off the bench in 23 minutes. Tucker was questionable going in with a left thigh contusion, though he was able to keep alive his NBA-leading streak of 267 consecutive games played. The 6-foot-5 forward last missed a regular-season game in April 2017.

New York was led by rookie guard Immanuel Quickley, who scored 22 points in just 21 minutes as a reserve. Quickley connected on 7-of-9 shots overall (77.8%), including 4-of-6 (66.7%) on 3-pointers. Veteran big man Julius Randle added 22 points and 9 rebounds in 33 minutes for the improving Knicks (13-15), who won for the fourth time in six games.

For the Rockets, reserve guards Sterling Brown and David Nwaba each scored 11 on Saturday, while veteran center DeMarcus Cousins added a double-double (10 points, 10 rebounds) in 22 minutes.

Houston’s road trip continues on Monday night in Washington against the Wizards (6-17), who have the second-worst record in the NBA and the worst in the Eastern Conference. On paper, that could offer a better opportunity for the weary Rockets to finally end their prolonged skid.

For now, check out postgame reaction and highlights from Saturday.

Watch: Derrick Rose hits Immanuel Quickley for first assist in return

Rose finished with 14 points in his debut with the Knicks on Tuesday in a loss to the Heat.

Derrick Rose made his debut with the New York Knicks on Tuesday, producing 14 points and three assists during a 98-96 loss on the road to the Miami Heat.

Rose, who played in New York during the 2016-17 season, was traded from the Detroit Pistons to the Knicks in exchange for Dennis Smith Jr. and a future second-round pick. The trade was officially completed on Monday morning with Rose joining the Knicks in Miami by nightfall.

The trade reunited Rose with head coach Tom Thibodeau, who Rose played for earlier in his career with the Chicago Bulls and Minnesota Timberwolves.

In his first game back with Thibodeau, Rose looked to be comfortable in the contest, and seemingly resembled a player that had been with the Knicks all season long.

Rose checked in for the first time with 3:27 to go in the first quarter and, less than a minute later, hit rookie Immanuel Quickley for his first assist back with the Knicks.

While Quickley got the first of three assists from Rose, fellow rookie Obi Toppin was the beneficiary of the best one of the evening. On the play, Rose split a pair of defenders and then hit Toppin with the one-handed, no-look pass in the second quarter.

The Knicks are hopeful the addition of Rose can help the team perform better with his veteran leadership and knowledge of the game. Despite a losing effort, Rose certainly got off to a quick start in his debut and should only improve the more he plays with his new team.

Derrick Rose taking Knicks rookies under his wing in New York return

The former MVP mentored rookies like Killian Hayes this season in Detroit and is looking to continue that role in New York.

Derrick Rose just joined the New York Knicks on Monday, but the former Most Valuable Player already made a strong effort to connect with two of his new rookie teammates.

Rose, who played in New York during the 2016-17 season, was traded from the Detroit Pistons to the Knicks in exchange for Dennis Smith Jr. and a future second-round pick. The trade was officially completed on Monday morning with Rose joining the Knicks in Miami by nightfall.

On Tuesday, Knicks rookie Immanuel Quickley revealed that Rose reached out to him and fellow first-round pick, Obi Toppin. Rose sat down and had dinner with the two rookies and offered his assistance in anything that is needed from them.

“He just stressed to me — first of all, he gave me his number — and said anything I need just hit him,” Quickley said, via the New York Post. “But he sat down with me a little bit, me and Obi actually, just told us he’s here to help us, he’s here to help us grow and things like that. It’s good to get a chance to talk to him a little bit last night.”

The 32-year-old version of Rose is much different than the one that played under head coach Tom Thibodeau with the Chicago Bulls and Minnesota Timberwolves earlier in his career. Rose still has much to offer the Knicks on the court, but the 13-year veteran has also taken on additional leadership qualities and played an integral role in mentoring some of the rookies in Detroit, such as Killian Hayes.

Rose will be looking to continue that role in New York and Quickley will be all ears throughout the rest of the season.

“Anytime you can get a chance to pick someone’s brain who’s been through pretty much everything – playoffs, everything, as far as MVP,” Quickley said. “It’s always a good chance to learn from somebody who has the experience. That’s the best teacher as far as picking his brain through everything he’s known about the game. It’s something I’m looking forward to.”

With Rose now in the picture, it is unclear how his arrival will impact Quickley on the court.

Quickley has emerged as a key contributor off the bench and has been among the best rookies to this point of the season. He believes he can fit well next to Rose and is willing to play whatever role is asked of him moving forward in the rotation.

The acquisition of Rose appears to be a good move for the Knicks.

He can certainly provide additional guidance and advice for the younger players on the team, like Quickley and Toppin. Only time will tell, though, if he can help them pick up some additional wins…

Magic Johnson highlights 5 most impressive rookies of 2020-21 season

The Hall of Famer names his early Rookie of the Year choice and other first-year players that have impressed him the most this season.

With most teams one-third of the way through the 2020-21 season, some players have started to separate themselves in the various awards races based on their early performances to begin the year.

Hall of Famer Magic Johnson weighed in on a couple of the races Monday night on Twitter, including the MVP and Rookie of the Year awards. According to Johnson, Charlotte Hornets guard LaMelo Ball has emerged as the leading candidate for Rookie of the Year.

The proclamation by Johnson came after Ball recorded 24 points, 10 assists and seven rebounds in a win over the Houston Rockets. Ball also hit seven 3-pointers, becoming the youngest player in NBA history to reach those numbers in a game.

While Johnson named Ball as the leading Rookie of the Year candidate, the three-time MVP also went on to highlight the other rookies that have impressed him the most this season. His list includes two more top-three picks and a couple selected outside of the top 10.

The five rookies highlighted by Johnson can all make a case to be the best players of the class so far this season. While there have been some great performances by others, that group has been the most consistent on the court and have had strong starts to this point.

Of course, there is still plenty of basketball left to be played this season and things can certainly change. However, at this point of the season, Johnson may be spot on with his early selections.
