Nets Report Card: First quarter of 2019-20 season

The Brooklyn Nets are through the first quarter of their 2019-20 schedule. Nets Wire assesses how the players have performed so far.

Following their loss to the Miami Heat on Sunday, the Brooklyn Nets are now 20 games into their 82-game season. While fans have gotten a taste of the next era of basketball in Brooklyn, there’s still plenty of room for this team to grow.

Some players have shown promise. Others have left something to be desired throughout the Nets’ 10-10 start to the 2019-20 season.

Here are Nets Wire’s grades for the individuals who have contributed to Brooklyn so far this year (with the exceptions of two-way players Henry Ellenson and Timothe Luwawu-Cabarrot, who have only logged garbage time minutes.) (This, of course, excludes Kevin Durant and Wilson Chandler.)

Iman Shumpert: ‘I bring something totally different’ to Nets

Iman Shumpert finally had a chance to tell Brooklyn Nets fans what they can expect from him following his signing.

Kenny Atkinson, Kyrie Irving and Joe Harris all know what Iman Shumpert can provide the Brooklyn Nets.

Atkinson has known Shumpert since the two were part of the New York Knicks organization. The now-Nets head coach was the Shumpert’s guard coach.

Irving and Harris later reaped the benefits of Shumpert’s hard work as he helped the Cleveland Cavaliers win an NBA title.

The veteran guard has been one of the league’s more tenacious defender’s over the past decade. He told reporters in Denver — as did Atkinson — he will make broken plays happen to help create more Brooklyn possessions on the offensive end.

But the first thing Shumpert said he’ll provide the Nets with is energy.

No matter where I go I bring the energy, energy and passion. I think that just from outside looking in at these it, [this is] a great group of guys. A lot of talented guys. Not that I don’t fit in, but at the same time I bring something totally different, where it’s not in anybody’s way. It’s not anything but a gel to bring everybody together.

Above all else, Shumpert is always looking to “play ball the right way.”

After initially being ruled questionable, Kyrie Irving is active vs. Nuggets

The Brooklyn Nets will at least be able to play half of their normal starting backcourt against the Denver Nuggets.

Heading into Thursday’s game in Denver against the Nuggets, the Nets were already without Caris LeVert, knowing he had ligament damage in his right thumb. Now Brooklyn will be without its starting shooting guard for four to six weeks following his surgery.

There was a chance the entire Nets backcourt would be sidelined against Denver. On Wednesday, Brooklyn announced Kyrie Irving was questionable to play against the Nuggets due to a right shoulder impingement. Thursday afternoon, Irving was upgraded to probable and has now been declared active by the Nets.

Thursday could also mark the first time Irving plays alongside Iman Shumpert since the two played in Cleveland together for the Cavaliers. (Though that seems like a big if, given Shumpert hasn’t been with a team.) Following the development of the extent of LeVert’s injury, the Nets signed Shumpert to fill the extra 16th roster spot, which the Nets are allowed as a result of Wilson Chandler’s suspension for violating the NBA’s drug policy.

Report: Caris LeVert out four to six weeks following surgery

Caris LeVert should be able to return to action by Christmas if not sooner.

Brooklyn Nets guard Caris LeVert will miss four to six weeks as he recuperates from surgery to repair ligament damage, according to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski.

The surgery, conducted earlier today by Dr. Michelle Carlson, was successful, and will keep the Ohio native out of action until sometime between the second week of next month and Christmas Day if projections for the Michigan product’s recovery hold up.

The team has been proactive since becoming aware of the injury (first thought to be a sprain), signing free agent wing Iman Shumpert with a 16th roster slot opened up by forward Wilson Chandler’s 25-game suspension.

With Kyrie Irving potentially missing time Thursday in Brooklyn’s match against the Denver Nuggets and both Chandler and star forward Kevin Durant still out, Shumpert’s signing should provide much-needed depth, at least until Chandler returns from his league-mandated break.

Caris LeVert’s thumb surgery successful

The Brooklyn Nets have yet to establish a timetable for Caris LeVert’s return.

The Brooklyn Nets will be without Caris LeVert for some time following his procedure on Thursday. Surgery was performed on his right thumb to repair damaged ligaments.

The surgery was conducted by Dr. Michelle Carlson and was deemed a success. Though, the Nets have not announced a timeline for LeVert.

The signing of free agent guard Iman Shumpert indicates LeVert could be out for an extended period of time. Brooklyn signed Shumpert on Thursday following the news of the ligament damage in LeVert’s thumb.

Shumpert is taking the added 16th spot on the roster, which the Nets have as a result of Wilson Chandler’s suspension for violating the NBA’s drug policy. The only way the Nets can keep Shumpert past December 14 — the day before Chandler returns — is by waiving or trading someone else.

Nets sign free agent guard Iman Shumpert

Down multiple players on the wing, the Nets turn to free agent Iman Shumpert to help turn things around.

Following the news of Caris LeVert having ligament damage in his right thumb, the Brooklyn Nets made a move.

The team announced the signing of Iman Shumpert on Wednesday. The move was first reported by ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski.

Already down Kevin Durant (ruptured Achilles) and Wilson Chandler (25-game suspension for violating the NBA’s drug policy, the Nets were in need of another body with LeVert going down. Following the first three games, Brooklyn was allowed an extra roster spot through the middle of December because of Chandler’s suspension.

Shumpert was last with the Houston Rockets, joining them in the middle of the 2018-19 season. While in Houston, he only averaged 4.6 points, 2.7 boards and 1.1 assists per game while playing through nagging lower-body injuries.

According to Bobby Marks of ESPN, Shumpert will have a cap hit of $13,108 per day. If the Nets want to keep Shumpert past December 14 — the deadline for the 16th roster spot — they will need to waive or trade someone else.

Report: Caris LeVert has ligament damage in right thumb

Caris LeVert may miss some time for the Brooklyn Nets because of his right thumb.

The Brooklyn Nets may be without Caris LeVert longer than initially anticipated. The shooting guard was ruled out against the Utah Jazz due to a right thumb sprain.

But now, Shams Charania of The Athletic is reporting LeVert’s injury is more than a sprain. LeVert has ligament damage in his right thumb and is in the process of visiting specialists.

With Wilson Chandler still having 15 games left on his suspension for violating the NBA’s drug policy in the offseason and LeVert’s status being up in the air over the next few weeks, the Nets were in need of another body. Both Chandler and LeVert’s situation, combined with Brooklyn’s defensive struggles through the first 10 games of the season, all could have played a role in the Nets agreeing to a deal with Iman Shumpert, which was reported by ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski.

Prior to his injury, LeVert was averaging 16.8 points per game on 42.1% shooting (36.1% from three).
