The Illinois Fighting Illini (7-3, 4-3 Big Ten) and Rutgers Scarlet Knights (6-4, 3-4) tangle in a battle of bowl-eligible squads Saturday in Piscataway. The opening kickoff at SHI Stadium is set for noon ET (Peacock). Let’s analyze BetMGM Sportsbook’s college football odds around the Illinois vs. Rutgers odds, and make our expert college football picks and predictions.

Illinois finds itself on the road for just a second time since Sept. 28. Last Saturday, the Illini came off a bye week and drilled Michigan State 38-16, covering as -1.5 home favorites with the Over (47.5) hitting. RB Josh McCray ran for 3 TDs and 61 yards on 9 carries, while QB Luke Altmyer threw 2 TDs and finished with 231 passing yards.

Rutgers upset Maryland on the road last Saturday 31-17. The Scarlet Knights covered as 4-point underdogs and the Under (54.5) cashed as they won their second in a row after a winless October (0-4). QB Athan Kaliakmani (238 passing yards, 2 TDs) and RB Kyle Monangai (97 rushing yards, 2 TDs) led the attack. However, Maryland outgained Rutgers in total yards 457 to 370.

Illinois at Rutgers picks and predictions

Prediction

Rutgers 28, Illinois 24

Moneyline

Rutgers is on a decent trend line on both sides of the ball. The Scarlet Knights have thrown for 238 yards-plus in each of their last 4 games, and some October red-zone issues have been cleaned up the last 2 games.

The RU offense is not explosive, but the recent improvements in passing and the team’s ability to stay on schedule make Rutgers a slight lean in what figures as a close game.

Neither side is adept at making disruptive plays on defense. Illinois may well play much of this one with a lead, but give the home side enough of a probability a keeping the contest close and closing it out with a win.

TAKE RUTGERS (-115).

Play our free daily Pick’em Challenge and win! Play now!

Against the spread

AVOID. It’s worth the extra juice to back the moneyline at -115 vs. laying 1½ points at -110.

Over/Under

The Over has cashed in 4 of Rutgers’ last 5 games and in 9 of the Knights’ last 11 in Piscataway.

The public is expecting a 20-something-to-20-something close game, and the expected game flow does not argue much with this total.

Windy conditions are in the forecast, but tab OVER 47.5 (-115) with a slight lean.

Illinois at Rutgers: Three things to know

  1. Illinois opened its Big Ten season with a 92-65 home rout of Minnesota Tuesday. Sophomore C Kofi Cockburn scored a career-high 33 points and pulled in 13 rebounds in just 25 minutes as the Illini easily covered as 9-point favorites. Junior G Ayo Dosunmu leads Illinois with 22.7 points per game. Cockburn averages 16.7 PPG and a team-high 9.4 rebounds per game. The Illini had dropped their previous game at Missouri 81-78 as 3-point favorites last Saturday.
  2. Rutgers, which was a 2.5-point underdog, opened conference play with a 74-60 win at Maryland Monday. Junior G Ron Harper Jr. scored 19 of his game-high 27 points in the second half and the Scarlet Knights won their first Big Ten opener since joining the conference in 2014. Harper leads the Knights with 23.2 PPG, while junior C Myles Johnson averages a team-best 9.0 RPG.
  3. Illinois leads the all-time series vs. Rutgers 8-2 (7-2 in Big Ten games), but the Scarlet Knights won the last matchup 72-57 as 4.5-point favorites Feb. 15. Rutgers led 34-32 at the half and pulled away with a 38-25 second half. Harper scored a game-high 27 points in the Rutgers win.

Illinois at Rutgers: Odds, betting lines, predictions and picks

Prediction

Illinois 68, Rutgers 62

Money line (ML)

PASS. Rutgers opened as a 1-point favorite, but the line has moved in Illinois’ favor overnight. With it being so close, let’s just focus on the spread.

Against the spread (ATS)

ILLINOIS -1.5 (-120) is the STRONGEST PLAY – 1.5 times your usual wager. No question about it, Rutgers is playing well and has been very impressive, but you have to go all the way back to 1934-35 to find the last time a Scarlet Knights team opened a season with five consecutive double-digit victories.

This Illinois squad is at a different level. The Illini have the talent to win a national championship. With no full house at the RAC (Rutgers Athletic Center), talent wins out. HAMMER THE ILLINI -1.5 (-120)!

Over/Under (O/U)

Back the UNDER 144 (-105) with a HALF-UNIT WAGER. Illinois’ defense allows 64.6 PPG, while Rutgers yields 67.0 PPG. Look for a sluggish start in this Sunday afternoon matchup.

Previewing Saturday’s Illinois Fighting Illini at Rutgers Scarlet Knights sports betting odds and lines, with college football betting picks, tips and predictions.

The Illinois Fighting Illini (0-3, 0-3 Big Ten) and Rutgers Scarlet Knights (1-2, 1-2) meet in Piscataway, N.J., for a 1 p.m. ET kickoff Saturday. Below, we analyze the Illinois-Rutgers college football betting odds and lines, with picks and predictions.

  • Money line: Illinois +185 (bet $100 to win $185) | Rutgers -223 (bet $223 to win $100)
  • Against the spread/ATS: Illinois +5.5 (-110) | Rutgers -5.5 (-110)
  • Over/Under: 51.5 (O: -106 | U: -115)

Illinois at Rutgers: Three things to know

  1. The Illini have been tattooed in two of their three games, falling 45-7 at Wisconsin in the opener, and 41-14 to Minnesota at home last week. They were somewhat respectable against Purdue, losing 31-24 in Champaign on Halloween, and that’s the only game they have covered to date. They’re just 116th in the nation with 15.0 PPG scored, while allowing 39.0 PPG.
  2. Rutgers opened with a stunning 38-27 win at Michigan State as a 9.5-point underdog, but it was dumped at home by Indiana 37-21, and was dusted at Ohio State 49-27 last time out. It is a solid 2-1 ATS, and the Over is 3-0 through three outings.
  3. Rutgers hasn’t been a favorite since Aug. 30, 2019, when it covered a 17-point number vs. UMass. The last time Rutgers was favored in a Big Ten game was Oct. 14, 2017, winning 35-24 in Champaign as a 1.5-point favorite. The Scarlet Knights are 4-0 SU/ATS in the past four as a favorite since Sept. 2017.

Illinois at Rutgers: Odds, betting lines, predictions and picks

Prediction

Rutgers 31, Illinois 23

Money line (ML)

Rutgers (-223) is just the healthier team, and it’s at home. However, risking more than two times your potential return on Rutgers is always a risky proposition. AVOID.

Against the spread (ATS)

RUTGERS -5.5 (-106) is worth a small-unit play, as it has won and covered each of its past four as a favorite since Sept. 2017. Meanwhile, Illinois is expected to be without starting QB Brandon Peters for a third straight game after a positive COVID-19 test. The Illini have a mish-mash under center, with backup Isaiah Williams back after contact tracing and fourth-string QB Coran Taylor available. This Illini team is poor, and will struggle to make this a one-score game.

Over/Under (O/U)

OVER 51.5 (-115) should come across the finish line in the fourth quarter. Illinois, even with some issues under center, should be able to move the ball on Rutgers. The Scarlet Knights have scored 21 or more points in each of their three games, and will likely come close to their production from Game 1, when they hung 38 on Michigan State.
