Arkansas out-slugs SEMO to win Fayetteville Regional opener

Hudson White and Ben McLaughlin combined for four home runs and 11 RBIs as Arkansas beat SEMO, 17-9, in the Fayetteville Regional Friday.

Arkansas got six home runs, including two apiece from Hudson White and Ben McLaughlin, to out-slug Southeast Missouri State, 17-9, in the opener of the Fayetteville Regional at Baum-Walker Stadium Friday.

White homered in his first and last at-bat of the game. His solo shot off Warhawks starter Haden Dow in the bottom of the first inning gave the Razorbacks an early 1-0 lead.

The Arkansas catcher ended his day in the eighth with a three-run blast to left-center that put the finishing touches on a five-RBI day. The home runs were White’s seventh and eighth of the season.

McLaughlin hit his eighth and ninth home runs, and the Razorbacks also got long balls from Wehiwa Aloy and Kendall Diggs in a 16-hit affair. McLaughlin finished his day with six RBIs.

Arkansas (44-14 overall) got out to an 8-0 lead after a seven-run second inning that was capped by a three-run shot from McLaughlin, only to see SEMO (34-26) score eight unanswered runs over three innings to tie the game at 8-all against Razorbacks starter Mason Molina and reliever Will McEntire.

Arkansas pulled back ahead in the fifth on back-to-back home runs from Aloy and Diggs for a 10-8 lead.

After SEMO’s Bryce Cannon doubled home Chance Resetich to make it 10-9, White sent the first pitch he saw from reliever Kyle Miller to right for an RBI sacrifice fly that pushed a run across for an 11-9 lead.

With two out, McLaughlin crushed his second homer of the day — a 413-foot three-run blast to right that put the Diamond Hogs ahead, 14-9.

White’s three-run homer with two out in the eighth came off Alex Hayes, the Warhawks’ sixth pitcher of the day.

Six players finished with two hits or more for Arkansas, including McLaughlin’s 3-for-5 performance. White (2-for-4), Aloy (2-5), Diggs (2-3), Peyton Holt (2-4) and Ty Wilmsmeyer (2-5) each picked up two hits.

Christian Foutch (1-0) earned his first win of the season in relief. The real star out of the Razorbacks’ bullpen was SEC Freshman of the Year Gabe Gaeckle. The right-hander held SEMO to one run in three innings of work despite allowing three walks and three hits. He struck out six in his 22nd appearance.

Jake Faherty pitched a scoreless ninth inning to close out the game.

Collin Wilma (2-5) suffered the loss for Southeast Missouri State, allowing three runs in three innings. Molina lasted just 1 2/3 innings on the bump for Arkansas and left after allowing six hits.

Diamond Hogs smack 4 homers to highlight fall scrimmage

The Diamond Hogs blasted four homeruns in an intrasquad scrimmage Friday night.

In preparation for Saturday’s showdown with BYU on the football field at Donald W. Reynolds Razorback Stadium, a slew of faithful Arkansas fans gathered inside Baum-Walker Stadium Friday night to cheer on the Razorbacks newly reloaded baseball squad in an intrasquad scrimmage.

Fans got to see 19 position players and 14 pitchers, including many of the new freshman and transfers, as the Red and Gray teams combined for 11 hits, highlighted by four homeruns. The Gray won the contest, 7-2.

Junior right fielder Kendall Diggs got the crowd stirred early, with a mammoth two-run homer off junior hurler Brady Tygart to give the Gray team the lead, only two batters into the game. That followed a seven-pitch walk by a Missouri grad transfer Ty Wilmsmeyer.

Junior lefty transfer Mason Molina, who was the ace of the Texas Tech staff last season, wasted little time in making an early statement in the bottom of the first, striking out the side in order. Freshman left-hander Hunter Dietz, who throws upward of 95 mph on his fastball, quickly responded in the top of the second, sitting down the first three batters he faced.

Senior catcher Parker Rowland, who is competing behind the plate with junior Hudson White, another Texas Tech transfer, launched a 400-foot solo homerun in the bottom of the second to get the Cardinal on the scoreboard. That was followed by a wild pitch to tie the score at 2-2.

Junior Hudson Polk would keep the long-ball hit-parade going for the catchers when he smashed a 425-foot leadoff homer over the centerfield wall to lead off the third for the Gray.

“The big thing for me was getting outfield reps,” Diggs said of his summer experience. “I got a glimpse of some playing time out there last year (for Arkansas), which was awesome. I was really blessed to get some live-game reps. But that was huge for me this summer, because I played almost every game out there in right field. And I feel like I improved a lot out there.”

Freshman catcher Ryder Helfrick then displayed his defensive prowess and throwing arm behind the play, gunning down graduate infielder Jack Wagner trying to steal second base, in the fourth.

Freshmen hurlers Tate McGuire and Colin Fisher — who struck out the side in his frame — each pitched scoreless innings in the sixth, before the Gray squad tacked on two final runs in the seventh.  Freshman infielder Nolan Souza beat out an infield single, then proceeded to score on Wagner’s double. It was the second hit of the night for Wagner, who smacked 15 homers for Tarleton State (Stephenville, Tex.) last season.

The Razorbacks will scrimmage again on Sunday, and will continue fall practices through late October, when they will conclude the early season with their annual intrasquad best-of-three Fall World Series.

Report: Diamond Hogs pick up former Texas Tech starting catcher

Hudson White was a Freshman All-American and an Honorable Mention All-Big 12 hitter.

Arkansas appears to have its next starting catcher.

Former Texas Tech backstop Hudson White will transfer to play for the Razorbacks in 2024, according to Future Star Series’ Joe Doyle.

White hit for a .296 average with a .397 on-base percentage and slugged .550 for the Red Raiders last year en route to Honorable Mention All-Big 12 honors. He will have two seasons of eligibility left at Arkansas.

The Razorbacks primarliy used Parker Rowland as the team’s starting catcher this season after he transferred in from Eastern Oklahoma State College. He hit .182 with two home runs in 42 starts. His back-up, Hudson Polk, hit .190 with two homers in 19 starts.

White was a Freshman All-American and the Big 12 Freshman of the Year in 2022. That season he hit .260 with six home runs and 40 RBI.
