Howard coach Larry Scott gave Rutgers’ Greg Schiano an earful for running up the score

Greg Schiano seemingly ticked off Howard’s Larry Scott to start the 2024 college football season.

Rutgers coach Greg Schiano courted a bit of controversy during his team’s season opener against Howard on Thursday night.

As the Scarlet Knights held a 38-7 lead with just seven seconds to go in the fourth quarter against the Bison, Schiano opted to go for a touchdown rather than just kneel it out and walk away with the home win.

Rutgers running back Antwan Raymond got the handoff and ran it in for the score, which gave the team a 44-7 victory in the end.

Well, that didn’t thrill Howard coach Larry Scott, who seemed to give Schiano a piece of his mind during the postgame huddle.

Look, it’s hard to say anything else than Rutgers was just trying to run up the score — even if they didn’t kick the PAT — which isn’t a great look in a season opener against an opponent you were expected to beat and had already lost by the time you snapped the ball.

“I think we’re both two competitive people,” Scott said postgame, per ESPN. “And in that situation, I would choose to handle it a little bit differently. I can’t speak for him. I have a lot of respect for Coach Schiano, what he’s done and what he’s been able to do. But we’re both competitive. And in that situation, you know, just a little bit of frustration came out because I thought it would have been handled differently. But he might as well.”

It makes sense for Scott to be a bit miffed at Schiano, who got the win but looked like a bad sport in the end for not just running out the clock.

“Guys practiced all training camp. They deserve to play,” Schiano said of the late score. “There was no running it up. If it was running it up, you don’t use timeouts when you have the ball. You let the game end. That wasn’t retaliatory. We were going to run plays. We bring a team in here to play us. We bring them here. We bring them in, we’ve got to win and we’ve got to get reps. And they were there, we took them.”

Why South Carolina State Will Win

The Bulldogs get an Alabama A&M that wasn’t quite preparing for this.

SC State was supposed to play Howard, but those plans were scrapped because of restrictions in Washington DC. However, the MEAC Bulldogs has the defense in place to handle the changes and the disruptions.

The secondary is solid, the linebacking corps is potentially great, and the offense that was just okay two years ago at least has enough experience to be a bit better. Just hold serve and let that amazing D to the rest.

Why Alabama A&M Will Win

Alabama A&M was supposed to play Mississippi Valley State, but now it’s making the trip over to Orangeburg to get the season going.

Aqeel Glass should be the best quarterback in the SWAC, running an efficient offense that, like South Carolina State, just has to not screw things up so the defense can do the rest.

The D might have struggled in 2019, but the talent is there to bounce back fast around a strong pass rush and good group to hold up against the run.

What’s Going To Happen

Both defenses will be solid, but South Carolina State’s will be better right out of the gate. The offense will struggle just enough to not pull away, but the secondary will make up for it.

Howard (0-0) vs Delaware State (0-0) Game Preview

For latest lines and to bet on the NFL, go to BetMGM

Why Howard Will Win

The Bison have a slew of key defensive parts back. It starts with big-tackling safety Ray Williams, it continues with playmaking DBs Rodney Denard and Aaron Walker who could and should keep the Delaware State offense from cranking up a ton of big plays.

No, Howard might not have a whole lot of guys up front who can make plays behind the line, and the passing game might take a little while to get going even with a big, talented veteran in Quinton Williams back at quarterback, but the O should be a bit better if the offensive front can hold up.

Delaware State didn’t exactly live in opposing backfields a few years ago and likely won’t rock right out of the gate, but …

Why Delaware State Will Win

There are a whole lot of good parts that should grow into their respective jobs after a rough 2019.

The Hornets couldn’t get the running game going, but they were okay against the run.

They couldn’t do a whole lot to bomb away and generate big plays, but they managed to do a strong job at scoring when they had the chance to finish off drives.

Expect an improvement offensively with a nice group of skill parts back and the upside to get attack going with an improved passing game, but …

What’s Going To Happen

Both teams are going to have problems on the lines.

In a game like this in a strange spring season with so much uncertainty, the teams with the stronger defensive parts are going to have the advantage early on – Howard has those guys in the secondary and Delaware State has them in the linebacking corps.

The home side will slip by in a fun defensive slugfest.
