Texans to receive performance from Beyoncé as a halftime Christmas present

Beyoncé is headed back to Houston for the holidays and the Texans’ game against the Ravens.

Queen Bee takes center stage this holiday season at NRG Stadium.

Superstar singer and 32-time Grammy Awarding-winning entertainer Beyoncé will perform at halftime of the Houston Texans’ Christmas Day game against the Baltimore Ravens, the team and Netflix announced Sunday night.

Houston, which also plays on Saturday at Arrowhead Stadium against the Kansas City Cheifs, returns five days later to participate in one that will be streamed exclusively on Netflix. The Chiefs will open the afternoon with a matchup against the Pittsburgh Steelers at noon.

A native of Houston, Beyoncé’s performance will air exclusively on the streaming site as part of the flare. This marks the first time she’s performed at an NFL event since her collaboration in 2016 with Coldplay and Bruno Mars at Super Bowl L in Santa Clara, California.

That performance ended up being one of the most-watched Super Bowl halftime shows, with 115.5 million tuned to see her perform “Formation.”

The concert will also mark the first time she’s performed songs from her Cowboy Carter album, which was nominated for 11 Grammys.

“Your early Christmas wish has been granted as Beyoncé will perform during Netflix’s first-ever NFL Christmas Gameday live on Netflix this December 25,” a statement released by Netflix read. “The performance will take place during the second of Netflix’s two games, as the Houston Texans host the Baltimore Ravens at NRG Stadium at 4:30 PM ET.

This performance in her hometown of Houston, Texas, produced by her company, Parkwood Entertainment and Jesse Collins Entertainment, will be the first live performance of songs from her genre-bending and record-breaking COWBOY CARTER, album. The 11-time Grammy-nominated, juggernaut recently became the most nominated album by a female artist.”

The Netflix Christmas Day games will air on broadcast TV in the competing team cities and be available on U.S. mobile devices with NFL+.

Texans OC Bobby Slowik feels ‘really good’ about offensive line

Houston Texans offensive coordinator Bobby Slowik has confidence in the offensive line ahead of NFL Week 1 against the Baltimore Ravens.

The Houston Texans have three question marks across the offensive line, but offensive coordinator Bobby Slowik rests assured as to the answers.

Slowik met with reporters Sept. 7 and felt “really good” when asked about his confidence level with the five-man unit that has sustained injuries throughout the preseason.

“I mean, based on practice, which is all I can go off of right now, they’ve been locked in, they’ve been on it,” Slowik said. “They’ve handled everything we have given to them.”

The definitive vision for the Texans’ offensive line included second-year Kenyon Green starting at left guard, second-rounder Juice Scruggs at center, and fifth-year Tytus Howard at right tackle. Instead Houston will plug sixth-rounder Jarrett Patterson at center and go with new acquisitions Kendrick Green and Josh Jones to address their guard and tackle problems.

“They’ve taken advantage of looks we need to take advantage of,” said Slowik. “They’ve handled issues where there’s issues to be handled. They’ve done a really good job in practice.”

The Texans have key veterans at left tackle in three-time Pro Bowler Laremy Tunsil and right guard Shaq Mason, who has logged 115 starts over 120 activations with the New England Patriots (2015-21) and Tampa Bay Buccaneers (2022).

Texans coach DeMeco Ryans says Lamar Jackson is ‘dynamic’

Houston Texans coach DeMeco Ryans is aware of the all-around threat Baltimore Ravens QB Lamar Jackson presents.

DeMeco Ryans is well aware of what awaits the Houston Texans Sunday at M&T Bank Stadium.

The defense will be tasked with containing former NFL MVP Lamar Jackson, a job easier said than done. The Baltimore Ravens quarterback is as equally dangerous in the passing game as he is on the ground, which should present challenges for the Texans in Week 1.

“The challenge with Lamar is he’s one of the most dynamic players in the NFL,” Ryans told reporters Sept. 6. “You talk about the athlete that he is and the plays he’s able to make with his feet. But also, Lamar does a good job of putting the ball where he wants to put it.”

The Ravens signed Odell Beckham in the offseason and drafted receiver Zay Flowers in the first round. Baltimore also had tight end Mark Andrews and running back J.K. Dobbins on the roster.

Ryans knows the Ravens will look to attack Houston through the air with Jackson’s new weapons.

Said Ryans: “Their focus has been on [putting an] emphasis on throwing the ball more, getting him some more weapons on the outside, explosive weapons. And we’re going to have our hands full with that, being able to cover those guys but also having to deal with Lamar and his playmaking ability.”

Jackson has never faced Ryans as a defensive coordinator. When the Ravens beat the San Francisco 49ers 20-17 on Dec. 1, 2019, Robert Saleh was the defensive coordinator and Ryans the inside linebackers coach. Jackson went 14-of-23 for 105 yards and a touchdown while also contributing 16 carries for 101 yards and a touchdown.

“He’s done a really great job for the Ravens, and they’ve been a consistent organization when it comes to winning and being in the hunt every year — those guys are always there,” said Ryans. “So, it’s a credit to coach Harbaugh and what he’s done with that entire group.”

What makes Texans coach DeMeco Ryans anxious about Week 1

DeMeco Ryans will lead the Houston Texans in his first career game as coach. What is making him anxious about Week 1 against the Baltimore Ravens?

DeMeco Ryans has plenty of reasons to be anxious about Week 1.

The Houston Texans are taking on the Baltimore Ravens, the ever contending AFC North juggernauts led by quarterback Lamar Jackson. The matchup is a challenging way for the Texans to kick off the 2023 campaign.

Ryans is also making his debut as an NFL coach, as the man in charge on the sidelines. No longer will the 39-year-old be a part of the decisions, but Ryans will be making the calls.

Incidentally if there were an aspect of the impending bout that is making Ryans lose sleep, it is out of his control.

“I think one thing that would keep me up, and it shouldn’t, but it’s just making sure our guys go out and operate with precision,” Ryans told reporters Sept. 4. “Making sure our guys play as one — it’s one thing that I’ve been preaching all offseason is just us — like team-first, being a team.”

Ryans wants his players to not worry about who gets the credit, but rather how the team can, “be successful when everyone plays together as one single unit.”

Said Ryans: “I just want to see us go out and play complimentary football, all three phases in sync, being where we are supposed to be, being accountable, being trustworthy to each other, and playing with that enthusiasm and fire that I truly believe in that ignites a team.”

The inevitable kickoff begins Sunday at 12:00 p.m. Central Time at M&T Bank Stadium.
