Houston Roughnecks’ P.J. Walker could be a quarterback NFL teams look to in the future

This wasn’t P.J. Walker’s first rodeo.

This wasn’t P.J. Walker’s first rodeo.

He posted an impressive college career at Temple, and had a short stint in the NFL with the Indianapolis Colts, on and off the practice squad from 2017 to 2019 before taking the reins of the Houston Roughnecks’ offense in the second debut of the XFL.

He was one of the most recognized players in the league’s opening weekend, completing 23-of-39 passes for 272 yards with four touchdowns and one interception on Houston’s 37-17 home victory over the Los Angeles Wildcats.

At Temple, the 5-foot-11, 214-pounder finished his college career as the Owls’ all-time leader in pass attempts (1,410), completions (803), passing yards (10,273), TD passes (72), and total offense (11,100).

He brings a lot to the table — especially in terms of mobility and arm strength — but there’s still likely a long road ahead and some fine-tuning to do before he prepares to take his career to the next level yet another time.

Roughnecks coach June Jones has experience in coaching against Walker, and is eager to see what the quarterback can accomplish at the helm as the season progresses.

“He did some really good things,” he said. “I was kind of anxious to see him because I had played against him in college. When the play breaks down, you want the quarterback to create things, and he did a lot of stuff… that kind of was his magic in college, too. We get him plugged in, and if he can continue to get better in his reads, I think he has a real chance to be a pretty good player.”

Walker was pleased with his performance, which was received with chants of “P.J., P.J., P.J.” by a crowd of over 17,000 as he walked off the field in TDECU Stadium on Saturday night.

But like Jones, he knows the work is far from over after just the first game of the year.

“I missed a lot of reads to be honest… some reads I should never miss,” he said. “I’ve gotta go out there next week and not make the same mistakes… I’ve got to take what people give me and not try to force it downfield.”

Obviously it’s still early on, but in a league hungry for talented quarterbacks, a developed Walker could catch the eyes of the NFL teams like the Titans, who have experienced a lot of turnover at the position with a history of signing subpar backups who never seem to be able to answer the call like Zach Mettenberger and Blaine Gabbert — just to name a couple.

Walker and the Roughnecks will look to remain undefeated as they face the visiting St. Louis Battlehawks in Houston on Sunday at 5 p.m. CST.

XFL Week 1: Top 3 performances by former Titans players

Here’s a look at just three former Titans who particularly stood out on the day.

The XFL has officially relaunched, beginning with a doubleheader on Saturday.

The DC Defenders topped the Seattle Dragons, 31-19, and a matchup between the Houston Roughnecks and the Los Angeles Wildcats ended in a 37-17 home victory for Houston.

Here’s a look at just three former Titans who particularly stood out on the day.

WR Austin Proehl, DC Defenders.

Proehl, a Titan for only a day back in 2018, was one of the biggest standouts on the opening weekend.

He reeled in five catches on 10 targets for 88 yards and a pair of scores — his most impressive being a 57-yard touchdown reception to help build a Defenders lead the Dragons couldn’t compete with.

Former Titans LB Kaelin Burnett makes splash in XFL debut for Houston Roughnecks

Burnett was originally signed by the Titans in 2014, quietly recording three tackles over his five appearances.

Linebacker Kaelin Burnett may have only played in five games for the Tennessee Titans, but he’s getting a second chance at football in the city where the franchise originally started in Houston, Texas.

Burnett was originally signed by the Titans in 2014, quietly recording three tackles over his five appearances.

Burnett and the Roughnecks made their XFL debut on Saturday, recording a 37-17 victory over the visiting Los Angeles Wildcats to start the season off 1-0.

Burnett was an impact player for the Roughnecks, recording an interception off of Wildcats quarterback Charles Kanoff at the top of the second quarter.

Burnett finished the game with four tackles, one quarterback hurry, a pass defensed and a takeaway.

The Roughnecks undoubtedly won the turnover battle, as the Wildcats coughed up the ball four times before the contest was over.

Burnett and the Roughnecks will aim to stay undefeated as the St. Louis Battlehawks, led by former Ole Miss Rebels quarterback Jordan Ta’amu, travel to TDECU Stadium on Sunday.

Kickoff between the two teams is set for 5 p.m. CST.

Watch: Former Jags DB Cody Brown drops the hammer in XFL debut

A former Jaguar is already making his impact in the XFL in Cody Brown.

It didn’t take long for a former Jacksonville Jaguar to show up in the highlights for the Xtreme Football League. Former Jags defensive back Cody Brown found himself as a popular name on social media after making a big-time hit in the second game of the XFL’s relaunch between the Houston Roughnecks and Los Angeles Wildcats.

In an attempt at the end zone by the Wildcats, Brown was able to  come from over the top to lay a massive hit on receiver Jordan Smallwood to prevent a touchdown that would’ve given the Wildcats the lead. The cornerback covering Smallwood slipped, so it would’ve been an easy catch but with the quarterback putting a little too much air on the ball, Brown was able to get there to make the highlight play.

Afterward, the XFL reviewed the hit and deemed it legal as Brown made contact with the helmet, but didn’t launch at the receiver and led with his shoulder.

Brown signed with the Jags last April after a solid run with the Salt Lake City Stallions of the Alliance of American Football League. He was only on the team for a little over a month but it’s certainly good to see him having success after time in the NFL.

As for the game, the Roughnecks ended up winning the game 37-17.

Who is PJ Walker, QB who starred for the XFL’s Houston Roughnecks?

The XFL’s first day saw Houston Roughnecks quarterback PJ Walker put on a rousing performance.

Look out Deshaun Watson, there’s another quarterback in Houston.

That might be overstepping things but PJ Walker of the XFL’s Houston Roughnecks had a debut game that would make the Texans’ star proud.

Walker, who played college football at Temple, threw for 272 yards and 4 touchdowns in the Roughnecks’ 37-17 victory over the Los Angeles Wildcats Saturday. He also rushed for 27 yards and ran in a two-point conversion.

Walker, who was 23-of-39 with an interception, had four touchdown passes in the first three quarters of the win.

Easy to see now how Walker beat out for Michigan State star Connor Cook for the starting job under veteran and well-traveled head coach June Jones, an offensive wizard.

Jones said he remembered Walker from a game when Temple throttled SMU, 60-40, in 2015. Walker had four touchdown passes and a scoring run of his own in that game. That Friday night, Walker had 268 yards passing and 49 yards rushing.

Walker played at Temple from 2013-16. He threw for 10,668 yards and 74 touchdowns as an Owl.

On May 3, 2017, Walker was signed by the Indianapolis Colts as an undrafted free agent. He was waived that September and was signed to the Colts’ practice squad the next day. He signed a reserve/future contract with the Colts on Jan. 1, 2018. On Sept. 1, Walker was waived by the Colts and was signed to the practice squad the next day. He spent time on and off the Colts’ practice squad before being released on Dec, 26, but was re-signed three days later. He signed another reserve/future contract on Jan. 13, 2019. On Aug. 31, Walker was waived by the Colts and signed to the practice squad the next day, only to be released two days later.

A former Colts teammate expected big things.

He was not a secret to the Pittsburgh Steelers, who called the XFL office to ask if they could sign Walker for one week ahead of their matchup with the Baltimore Ravens in October 2019, as Walker was a similar player to Lamar Jackson. The XFL blocked the signing, as Walker was already under contract with the league.

Walker has a great mantra on his Twitter account: Hard work beats Talent, When Talent don’t Work Hard!!

Wildcats’ Elijah Hood wows FOX’s Brock Huard with hurdling ability

XFL running back Elijah Wood of the Wildcats showed some hops in the first half of the game against Houston

The first day of the XFL has brought some solid play and one spectacular leap.

Elijah Hood of the Los Angeles Wildcats saw a Houston defender going low while trying to make a tackle. So, the former North Carolina running back went airborne Saturday and in the process wowed FOX sideline reporter Brock Huard.

Check out the leap first:

And Huard in the background was caught on camera reacting to the hurdle.

It is a little more memorable than something labeled the “Houston Hop” after the Roughnecks scored a touchdown. Not sure if that one will stick.

Los Angeles Wildcats at Houston Roughnecks XFL odds, picks and best bets

Previewing Saturday’s Los Angeles Wildcats at Houston Roughnecks sports betting odds and lines, with XFL betting picks, tips and best bets.

The Houston Roughnecks (0-0) host the Los Angeles Wildcats (0-0) Saturday at 5 p.m. ET at TDECU Stadium in the second game of the opening weekend of the inaugural XFL season. Below, we breakdown the Roughnecks-Wildcats Week 1 matchup, with XFL betting picks and tips.

Wildcats at Roughnecks: XFL Week 1 preview, betting trends and notes

  • Roughnecks head coach and general manager June Jones leads his team against Wildcats head coach and general manager Winston Moss. Both bosses are loaded with experience across college and professional football.
  • Both sides are sprinkled with recognizable talents from the NFL and/or college ranks. Former Houston Texans WR Sammie Coates should be an early star for the Roughnecks. QB Josh Johnson is one of the top stars in the league for the Wildcats.
  • The Wildcats open the 2020 XFL season with +650 odds of winning the championship game April 26. The Roughnecks are right behind at +750 heading into the head-to-head season opener.
  • Those brand new to the XFL should note a few of the league’s new, alternative rules. After touchdowns, teams will have the option of running a play from the 2, 5, or 10-yard line for either 1, 2, or 3 points, respectively. There is no kicking for extra-point conversions.
  • If a team completes a forward pass behind the line of scrimmage, they may throw forward a second time, as long as the ball has not crossed the line of scrimmage.
  • Overtime will consist of five single-play possessions for each team.
  • The play clock will run at just 25 seconds, beginning once the ball has been spotted.

Prediction

Wildcats 25, Roughnecks 22

Moneyline (?)

The Wildcats will have the advantage at quarterback, but only if Johnson is able to suit up. Charles Kanoff is No. 2 on the QB depth chart. There’s no value in betting the Roughnecks at -278, and the bookmakers know little more than fans heading into this first slate of XFL games.

As is the theme of the week, blindly chase the value and back WILDCATS (+225).

New to sports betting? A $10 bet on the Wildcats to win as road dogs returns a profit of $22.50.

Against the Spread (?)

The Wildcats are being spotted 6.5 points in the second-smallest spread of the four Week 1 games in the XFL. There will be blowouts in this opening week of action, but it’s impossible to tell where they will come from. The Wildcats have the better odds of the two teams to win the XFL Championship Game, so we’ll again back WILDCATS (+6.5, -110) to stay within 6 points in a loss, or win outright.

Over/Under (?)

Saturday’s two XFL games are both coming with projected totals of 49.5 points. With Johnson unlikely to be at full health if he’s able to play, and the alternative being a backup quarterback under center in Week 1, we’re taking UNDER 49.5 (+105) at the more profitable number.

The totals will be riskiest bets of the week, until we – and the teams – get a proper sense of the new XFL rules and scoring system.

Houston Roughnecks 2020 XFL Championship odds

Odds via BetMGM, last updated February 6 at 10:10 a.m. ET.

Outright Winner: +750

The Roughnecks are among the longshots to hoist the championship trophy after the 2020 season at +750. This means a $10 XFL futures bet on the Guardians would fetch a profit of $75 if they were to win the championship game April 26.

Only the St. Louis Battlehawks +1000, and the Seattle Dragons +1100, have longer odds for the title.

A handful of ex-Jets are preparing for their XFL debuts

The Jets Wire takes a look at every former Jets player in the XFL and which are the five most notable players.

With the NFL season coming to a close, the revamped XFL is starting this weekend.

There are several former Jets involved in this new league, which has eight teams with rosters consisting of 52 players each. Not many players have extensive ties to Gang Green, nor did they have long stays in New York.

Here is a complete list of every former Jets player in the XFL:

Alex Balducci, Brandon Barnes, T.J. Barnes, William Campbell, Jeremy Clark, Stacy Coley, Kony Ealy, Obum Gwacham, De’Angelo Henderson, Darius James, Anthony Johnson, Taiwan Jones, Tre McBride, Robert Nelson, Nick Novak, Santos Ramirez, David Rivers, Edmond Robinson, Jalen Saunders, Jake Schum, Jacquies Smith, Shamarko Thomas, Jon Toth and DeAngelo Yancey

With that said, let’s take a look at the five most notable ex-Jets in the XFL.

DE Kony Ealy: Houston Renegades

(Rich Barnes-USA TODAY Sports)

The Jets claimed Kony Ealy off waivers from the Patriots in 2017 after New England traded a second-round pick to Carolina for his services.

In 15 games played for Gang Green, Ealy recorded 11 total tackles, one sack, nine passes defended and an interception. He left the Jets in free agency for the Cowboys but was cut before the season. Ealy spent time with Oakland before landing in the XFL.
