Indiana Wijay becomes first Sri Lankan Div. I QB as he commits to Houston

Indiana Wijay is believed to be the first Sri Lanken quarterback at the Division I level after he committed to Houston.

Pasadena High School (Calif.) senior quarterback Indiana Wijay is getting the chance to represent his heritage at the next level of football.

Wijay, a three-star recruit, committed to Houston on Thursday, according to ABC7. With the announcement, Wijay is believed to be the first Sri Lankan quarterback for a Division I football team, the outlet reported.

“It’s very exciting, representing a community that doesn’t get enough recognition and I just feel like I’m very grateful and proud to be a part of that community,” Wijay said to ABC7.

His parents, who were also Div. I athletes, met at Houston, and his sister is a volleyball commit to Texas A&M.

Wijay transferred to Pasadena ahead of his senior season and helped the Bulldogs win their second Pacific League title in a row. Over the season, the 6-foot-4, 200-pound quarterback passed for 2,116 yards at a 67.1% completion rate and had a touchdown-to-interception ratio of 25-to-1, per MaxPreps. In the Pacific League championship game, he threw five touchdowns at Rose Bowl Stadium in a 47-0 dismantling of Muir. Pasadena finished the season with a 9-2 record.

Now, Wijay will head to Houston and compete for a role on the roster. Perhaps the first Sri Lankan quarterback in Div. I can become the first to complete a pass, score a touchdown, and win a game at that level of play as well.

Houston MBB commit Jarace Walker is the Cougars’ first five-star prospect since Danuel House in 2012.

The University of Houston men’s basketball program got a massive win on Thursday when five-star recruit Jarace Walker committed to the Cougars.

Walker, ranked by 247Sports as the No. 13 overall player and 1 power forward in the class of 2022, is Houston’s first five-star commit since now-NBA player Danuel House chose the program in 2012.

The 6-foot-8 power forward is a star on the IMG Academy (Bradenton, Fla.) basketball team, a traditional powerhouse in the high school realm. He participated in USA Basketball’s 2018 Junior National Team minicamp and two 2019 minicamps.

He can finish strong at the rim and play in the low post and high post alike.

Who’s Next posted videos of the new Houston commit finishing dunks, overpowering opponents on the glass, and hitting an array of shots.

He joins a strong Cougars class that includes four-star small forward Terrance Arceneaux and four-star shooting guard Emanuel Sharp. This is Houston’s first class with three commits ranked in ESPN’s top-100 since the database began in 2007, according to the outlet.

Last season, Houston went 28-3 and reached the Final Four. In seven seasons under head coach Kelvin Sampson, the Cougars are 167-64 (72.3%) and have only one losing season.

John Curtis three-star RB Corey Wren decommits from Georgia

Corey Wren decommitted from Georgia. Is he still interested in Arizona State and Houston, or does the three-star athlete have his sights elsewhere?

Shortly after his final game of the high school season, John Curtis (River Ridge, Louisiana) running back Corey Wren announced he had decommitted from Georgia.

Wren had originally committed to the Bulldogs over summer. After leading John Curtis to the semifinals and rushing for 1,146 yards and 17 touchdowns to go with 132 receiving yards and two touchdowns, the three-star recruit decided to look toward other options.

Prior to his commitment, Wren had been heavily considering Arizona State and Houston, according to UGAWire. He has 31 offers, according to 247Sports.

Wren is listed on the 247Sports Composite Rankings as the No. 25 athlete and No. 23 player in the state of Louisiana.

While he can line up in the backfield or as a receiver, with John Curtis’ run-happy offense, Wren took the bulk of the load at running back.

Georgia has had a strong recruiting class. Ranked No. 5 in the nation on 247Sports, it includes four-star offensive playmakers Kendall Milton and Marcus Rosemy, ranked No. 37 and 40 in the country, respectively.

Wren now will look toward a different school in which he could get immediate playing time.

Arizona State could be an option. With wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk projected as an early-round draft pick and running back Eno Benjamin a potential to enter the draft, the Sun Devils may be in need of offensive weapons next season.

As for Houston, Wren would immediately jump to the top of the Cougars’ recruiting class alongside wide receiver Reginald Johnson, ranked No. 513 overall (Wren is No. 520 overall). Leading wide receiver Marquez Stevenson and running back Kyle Porter are both juniors, giving Wren an opportunity to take one of their roles once they leave school.
