Texas A&M coach Buzz Williams is thankful not to be ‘the Grinch at my house’ on Christmas

“I remember that Christmas not being a lot of fun. I was for sure the Grinch at my house, and I’m not going to be this year,” Williams said.

The Texas A&M men’s basketball team had a shot at redemption on the line Friday afternoon at Reed Arena and seized the opportunity.

With a dominant 77-45 victory against Houston Christian University, the Aggies avenged their 67-62 non-conference home loss against Wofford exactly two years prior. Texas A&M head coach Buzz Williams displayed relief postgame.

“Two years ago today, I was talking to you. Texas A&M paid for that game, too. It was Christmas. This is a Merry Christmas,” Williams recalled. “I recounted the game against the Wofford Terriers. I think the point guard, who was a freshman, abused us. I remember that Christmas not being a lot of fun. I was for sure the Grinch at my house, and I’m not going to be this year.

“This is the first time we’ve had double-digit wins in a semester. Considering the schedule we’ve played and all that has transpired, it’s the least number of games we’ve played at Reed Arena.”

The Aggies (10-2) have a week off before returning to College Station to host Abilene Christian University on Saturday at 3 p.m. on SEC Network.

Texas A&M basketball drops in the NET rankings after defeating HCU 77-45

Despite defeating HCU 77-45, Texas A&M has taken a slight drop in the latest NET rankings

Texas A&M’s sixth season under head coach Buzz Williams has been impressive through twelve games. The Aggies sit at 10-2 after defeating Houston Christian 77-45 on Friday afternoon.

Star point guard Wade Taylor IV missed his first game of the season, and even more surprising, the first game he’s missed as an Aggie. Overall, A&M’s offense struggled in the first half despite building a 35-23 halftime lead but came out much sharper in the second half, finishing 47% from the field.

With one game left in nonconference play against Abilene Christian on Saturday afternoon, Texas A&M’s success in the SEC will hinge on a strong start and more consistency in conference play, starting with hosting Texas on Saturday, January 4.

After defeating HCU, Texas A&M surprisingly dropped from No. 26 to 24th in the latest NET rankings, but the Aggies hold an impressive 5-1 record in Quad 1 and Quad 2 games. Ohio State, who A&M defeated earlier in the year, beat Kentucky on Saturday and rose to No. 22, which is good news for the Maroon & White.

Texas A&M will host Abilene Christian on Saturday, December 28, at 3:00 p.m. CT.

No. 12 Texas A&M handled business on Friday afternoon, beating Houston Christian by a large margin to earn their tenth win of the season.

The first 15 minutes of the game might have been a little frustrating to watch for Aggies fans due to A&M’s lack of intensity. They struggled to pull away from a team that had been blown out by the two previous Quad 1 teams they faced. You could feel the absence of the leadership and feel of the game Wade Taylor IV brings to the court.

Coach Buzz Williams also felt it, holding the Aggies in the locker room until it was time to play skipping warmups. Whatever he said struck a chord because they came out fast and furious in the second half.

After the game, Williams, alongside guards Hayden Hefner and Manny Obaseki, spoke to the media, collectively expressing the joy of heading into Christmas break with a win and some momentum before closing out nonconference play against Abilene Christian next Saturday afternoon.

Below are some of the best photos from the game.

Instant reaction to Texas A&M basketball’s win 77-45 over Houston Christian

Hayden Hefner leads the Aggies past HCU in a 32-point victory at Reed Arena on Friday afternoon

Texas A&M (10-2) reaches double-digit wins on the season beating Houston Christian (4-8) 77-45 at Reed Arena Friday afternoon.

The Aggies didn’t come out as clean as they should have, and it took them until about the five-minute mark before they took hold of the game. They shot the ball well but committed too many fouls allowing HCU twelve free-throw opportunities with them hitting eight. On the other end, A&M only shot a single free throw in the entire first half.

One reason for the slow start can be attributed to the fact that Wade Taylor IV did not suit up. This is the first time in his Aggie career that he’s missed a game, and it showed early. However, Hayden Hefner picked up the slack scoring 13 of his game-high 19 points in the first half to take a 35-23 lead into the locker room.

The second half was the brand of basketball we have become accustomed to seeing this season with A&M playing tight defense forcing contested shots and dominating the boards. Pharrel Payne and Manny Obaseki also woke up offensively for a combined 23 points and 12 rebounds. A&M easily pulled away in the half for a 32-point win in front of the home crowd at Reed Arena.

GAME NOTES:

  • Hayden Hefner led all scorers with 19
  • The Aggies out rebounded HCU 52-25
  • 47% FG / 41% 3PT / 60% FT

Texas A&M Basketball vs Houston Christian: Channel, time, streaming info

Watch Texas A&M vs HCU game today. Here’s how to watch, time, TV schedule, live streaming info, and game odds.

The No. 12 Texas A&M Aggies are rolling right now and have one of the best defensive teams in college basketball. They are riding a five-game winning streak with five Quad 1/2 wins in their 11 games.

A&M and Houston Christian have met 11 times, and the Aggies have won all 11 matchups. Outside of a close game three decades ago, A&M has beaten HCU with ease in the other ten games, and Friday should be no different. However, sports can throw you in a loop, and anything can happen.

However, both teams faced Creighton, where HCU suffered a significant defeat, losing 78-43, while A&M triumphed over the Bluejays with a score of 77-73 in the Player Era Festival Tournament. HCU is unlikely to match the Aggies’ performance and is expected to record their eighth loss of the season.

Former Michigan State football DB on Houston Christian’s roster

A former MSU DB has found his new home at Houston Christian

Following the 2024 spring showcase, Michigan State reserve DB Khary Crump made the decision to enter the transfer portal, leaving the program. Crump’s legacy at MSU will sadly be known from his involvement in the infamous tunnel incident with the University of Michigan.

While a public announcement was never made, Crump has been listed on Houston Christian’s football roster ahead of the 2024 season, showing where he will conclude his college football career.
