Houston Astros at Detroit Tigers odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Monday’s Houston Astros at Detroit Tigers odds and lines, with MLB expert picks and predictions.

The Houston Astros (90-50) take on the Detroit Tigers (54-86) Monday in the opener of a 3-game set at Comerica Park. First pitch is set for 6:40 p.m. ET. Let’s analyze Tipico Sportsbook‘s lines around the Astros vs. Tigers odds with MLB picks and predictions.

Season series: Astros lead 4-0

The Astros continue to cruise, taking 2 of 3 games from the Los Angeles Angels over the weekend. Houston is 7-3 and 20-10 over its last 10 and 30 games, respectively. They’ll travel to Detroit with expectations of a sweep. What could possibly go wrong?

The Tigers had a 3-game win streak snapped Sunday with a 4-0 loss to the Kansas City Royals. They’ve had their issues with the AL West at just 9-18. They do play markedly better at home with a 30-40 record as opposed to 24-46 on the road.

Astros at Tigers picks and predictions

Prediction

Astros 5, Tigers 2

Money line

The Astros are 35-11 against left-handed pitchers this year and should add to that dominance Monday, but their -220 ML is prohibitive. They’ve scored 4 or more runs in 6 of their last 10 games, so take the ASTROS OVER 3.5 TOTAL RUNS (-165) at a much more reasonable rate.

Run line/Against the spread

Detroit played Houston tough earlier in the season with a trio of 3-2 losses in the 4-game series. The team is a lot different and not as healthy now, though. E-Rod has given up 8 ER through 11 IP across his last 2 starts, and Houston cruises Monday.

Take the ASTROS -1.5 (-117) for a HALF-UNIT.

Over/Under

All 4 games between these teams went Under this season, and the Under has cashed in 7 in a row between these teams. Houston is just 3-6-1 O/U over the last 10, but Detroit is 6-2-2. There’s a strong, 12-mph wind blowing in from right-center field and the Under is 3-0-1 in Valdez’s last 4 starts.

LEAN UNDER 7.5 (-130).

Houston Astros at Detroit Tigers Game 1 odds, picks and prediction

Analyzing Saturday’s Houston Astros at Detroit Tigers Game 1 odds and lines, with MLB picks and predictions.

The Houston Astros (47-28) and Detroit Tigers (32-43) play the first game of a doubleheader Saturday with a 1:10 p.m. ET first pitch at Comerica Park. Let’s analyze BetMGM Sportsbook‘s lines around the Astros vs. Tigers odds with MLB picks and predictions.

LHP Framber Valdez is the projected starting pitcher for the Astros. He is 4-0 with a 1.67 ERA, 0.99 WHIP, 8.1 K/9 and 2.5 BB/9 in 32 1/3 IP over 5 starts.

Valdez has been money in June, winning his four starts while allowing 2 or fewer earned runs in each. He also lasted at least 7 innings every time out giving up a total of just 21 hits in 28 1/3 innings.

RHP Casey Mize is the projected starting pitcher for the Tigers. He is 4-4 with a 3.61 ERA, 1.12 WHIP, 7.2 K/9 and 2.6 BB/9 in 82 1/3 IP over 14 starts.

Mize has been respectable for most of the season, allowing 3 or fewer runs in 10 consecutive outings. He has served up 6 home runs across 24 2/3 innings in his four June starts, but the damage has come with a limited amount of baserunners.

  • Money line: Astros -210 (bet $210 to win $100) | Tigers +170 (bet $100 to win $170)
  • Against the spread/ATS: Astros -1.5 (-135) | Tigers +1.5 (+115)
  • Over/Under: 7 (O: -115 | U: -105)

Prediction

Astros 4, Tigers 1

Money line (ML)

The ASTROS (-210) are the lean in the opener of this doubleheader, albeit a little bit on the expensive side. Valdez has been on fire lately, winning four consecutive starts, and Houston has won 11 in a row overall. The Tigers were buried 12-3 in the series opener Thursday before Friday’s postponement.

Run line/Against the spread (ATS)

The ASTROS -1.5 (-135) covered the run line in the series opener and in each of their last six victories. Fourteen of their last 15 wins were also by 2 or more runs.

Over/Under (O/U)

The UNDER 7 (-105) is the play in this seven-inning front end of the double-dip. Valdez has been close to untouchable in June, and Mize has been limiting the damage lately too. It also helps that the winds will be gusting in at 14-17 mph from right field, helping to knock down any long balls.

Houston Astros at Detroit Tigers odds, picks and prediction

Analyzing Thursday’s Houston Astros at Detroit Tigers odds and lines, with MLB picks and predictions.

The Houston Astros (46-28) start a four-game series with the Detroit Tigers (32-42) Thursday at Comerica Park with first pitch coming at 7:10 p.m. Let’s analyze BetMGM Sportsbook‘s lines around the Astros vs. Tigers odds with MLB picks and predictions.

RHP Luis Garcia is the projected starting pitcher for the Astros. He is 5-4 with a 2.82 ERA, 1.07 WHIP, 10.2 K/9 and 2.8 BB/9 in 70 1/3 IP over 12 starts and 2 relief appearances.

Garcia has gone 5-1 in his last seven starts, most recently pitching June 18 going 7 innings allowing 1 ER against the White Sox. He tied his season-high with 8 K in that outing.

He has appeared in one game against the Tigers in his career, pitching 4 1/3 innings while allowing 0 ER and recording 7 K.

RHP Jose Urena is the projected starting pitcher for the Tigers. He is 2-7 with a 5.79 ERA, 1.59 WHIP, 5.6 K/9 and 4.1 BB/9 in 65 1/3 IP over 13 starts.

Urena has really struggled lately, losing his last three starts and allowing 17 ER in his last 11 IP. He’s struck out just 6 batters and walked 8 in that span.

He is 0-1 with a 1.59 ERA in one start against the Astros in his career.

Astros at Tigers odds, lines, picks and prediction

MLB odds courtesy of BetMGM; access USA TODAY Sports for a full list. Odds last updated at 11:45 a.m. ET.

  • Money line: Astros -225 (bet $225 to win $100) | Tigers +180 (bet $100 to win $180)
  • Against the spread/ATS: Astros -2.5 (+105) | Tigers +2.5 (-130)
  • Over/Under: 9.5 (O: -115 | U: -105)

Prediction

Astros 7, Tigers 3

Money line (ML)

The Astros have won 10 straight games, nine of which were by at least two runs. They’re on an absolute tear, sweeping the Rangers, White Sox and Orioles since June 15. The Tigers have won three straight, but Houston is scorching hot right now.

The money line of -225 is a bit too chalky for me, so I would PASS here, but the spread provides a good value with the Astros favored.

FANTASY BASEBALL: Serious about winning your league? Sign up for BaseballHQ.com to dominate the competition. Subscribe now!

Run line/Against the spread (ATS)

Not only have the Astros won 10 games in a row, but they covered the spread in each of those games. They lead MLB in runs and hits, and own the lowest strikeout rate in the league, while allowing the eighth-fewest runs in baseball, too.

Bet the ASTROS -2.5 (+105) to cover the spread and beat the Tigers easily. Urena’s struggles and low strikeout rate don’t bode well for Detroit.

Over/Under (O/U)

During the Astros’ 10-game win streak, the total has gone over eight times. They’ve scored at least seven runs seven times in that stretch while limiting their opponents to three or fewer runs nine times.

The Tigers will need to score a few runs to help push the run total up, but I like the OVER 9.5 (-115) tonight in Detroit.

Detroit Tigers at Houston Astros odds, picks and prediction

Analyzing Monday’s Detroit Tigers at Houston Astros odds and lines, with MLB picks and predictions.

The Detroit Tigers (3-6) and Houston Astros (6-3) open a three-game Minute Maid Park set Monday evening at 8:10 p.m. ET. Let’s analyze BetMGM Sportsbook‘s lines around the Tigers vs. Astros odds with MLB picks and predictions.

RHP Casey Mize is the projected starting pitcher for the Tigers.

Over one start this season and seven a year ago, he is 0-3 with a 6.40 ERA, 1.52 WHIP, 8.4 K/9, and 4.2 BB/9 in 32 1/3 IP. Mize allowed one run in a four-inning season debut (April 6 vs. Minnesota Twins).

RHP Zack Greinke is the projected starter for the Astros.

He has allowed just two runs through his first 13 IP this season. In 14 starts over 2020-21, Greinke is 4-3 with a 3.60 ERA, 1.06 WHIP, 8.4 K/9, and 1.1 BB/9 in 80 IP. The veteran righty owns a 3.44 ERA over 19 career starts at Minute Maid.

Tigers at Astros odds, lines, picks and prediction

MLB odds courtesy of BetMGM; access USA TODAY Sports for a full list. Odds last updated at 1:41 p.m. ET.

  • Money line: Tigers +185 (bet $100 to win $185) | Astros -225 (bet $225 to win $100)
  • Against the spread/ATS: Tigers +1.5 (+100) | Astros -1.5 (-120)
  • Over/Under: 8.5 (O: -105 | U: -115)

Prediction

Astros 6, Tigers 4

Money line (ML)

These two clubs head into the series ranked third (Houston) and 27th (Detroit) in OPS. The Astros have been making solid contact (7.8 K/9) while notching 6.2 runs per contest.

There isn’t enough ammo to recommend Mize and the Tigers side in this play. And the Houston tag figures as too steep. PASS.

FANTASY BASEBALL: Serious about winning your league? Sign up for BaseballHQ.com to dominate the competition. Subscribe now!

Run line/Against the spread (ATS)

TAKE THE ASTROS -1.5 (-120). The Houston offense is clicking, and the starter matchup — while perhaps not the slam dunk differential it appears to be — can give the home nine an early cushion.

Over/Under (O/U)

Minute Maid is a good home-run hitter’s park, and Mize is a question mark as to getting through the mid-innings without coughing up three or four runs.

Greinke has exhibited an uptick in velocity and has done well to limit hard contact through his first two starts. But the 37-year-old hasn’t missed a lot of bats, as evidenced by a 6.7% swinging-strike rate.

Throw in two bullpens which have looked like second-division units so far and some room to grow for a Tigers offense thus far undone by a .242 batting average on balls in play. And you work your way to solid value on the OVER 8.5 (-105).
