Charlotte Hornets at Memphis Grizzlies odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Friday’s Charlotte Hornets at Memphis Grizzlies odds and lines, with NBA expert picks, predictions and best bets.

The Charlotte Hornets (3-5) meet the Memphis Grizzlies (5-3) Friday at FedExForum. Tip is set for 8 p.m. ET. Below, we analyze Tipico Sportsbook’s lines around the Hornets vs. Grizzlies odds, and make our expert NBA picks and predictions.

The Hornets picked up a 120-113 win in overtime against the defending champ Golden State Warriors Saturday, but have followed that up with a pair of losses and non-covers. Charlotte was hammered 106-88 at the Chicago Bulls Wednesday to kick off its 2-game trip, failing to cover as a 6.5-point underdog.

The Grizzlies picked up a 111-106 win over the Portland Trail Blazers Wednesday to end their 4-game road trip with a 2-2 mark. Memphis will be glad to get some home cooking, as it is 2-0 SU in 2 games at FedExForum this season, hitting the Over both times.

Hornets at Grizzlies picks and predictions

Prediction

Grizzlies 120, Hornets 106

Moneyline

The Grizzlies (-900) are quite a bit on the expensive side, even if they are unbeaten at home. Memphis has been comfortable at FedExForum, and Ja Morant and company should grab a 3rd win in as many games at home this season. But this is just too much risk for not enough reward.

PASS, and look to the line instead.

Against the spread

GRIZZLIES -11.5 (-110) is a much better play, especially because Hayward is out for the Hornets. He is averaging 17.4 PPG with 4.3 RPG and 4.1 APG across the past 8 contests.

The Hornets have covered just once in the past 4 outings, and they’re 0-2 ATS in the past 2 on the road.

The Grizz are just 2-6 ATS overall this season, so this wager comes with a little risk. However, Memphis is 1-1 ATS at home this season, both against Eastern Conference foes, and it is worth playing against the skidding Hornets.

Over/Under

Play the UNDER 230.5 (-108), as it has been the rule for both teams lately.

The Under has hit in 3 of the past 4 games overall for the Grizzlies, while the Under is on a 3-0-1 role for the Hornets in the previous 4 outings, including their last 2 road contests. Both teams have some key members on the mend, too, so scoring will be down.

Hornets at Grizzlies odds, lines, picks and predictions

Prediction

Grizzlies 120, Hornets 113

Money line

PASS since I like Memphis in this spot but the Grizzlies (-200) is way out of my price range for an NBA regular-season favorite.

Memphis has handled Charlotte in their last four meetings with relative ease and the Hornets have gotten smoked on their West Coast trip.

Against the spread

GIMME the GRIZZLIES -4.5 (-115) for 1 unit because there’s been a “sharp line move” towards Memphis despite the bet splits being pretty even. The Grizzlies are getting much more money bet on them though and Memphis has gone from a 4-point opening favorite to the current number.

Also, the Grizzlies owned the Hornets on the glass in each of their past four meetings and that should happen again. Memphis acquired big Steven Adams this past offseason and Adams typically dominates the paint vs. opposing bigs.

Furthermore, Charlotte plays weak defense against what Memphis does frequently. For instance, the Grizzlies attempt the most shots within five feet of the basket and the third-highest rate of short mid-range shots (according to CleaningTheGlass.com).

But, the Hornets have the third-worst defensive field goal percentage vs. shot attempts within five feet of the basket and the fourth-worst defensive efficiency vs. shot mid-range field goal attempts (CleaningTheGlass.com).

Over/Under

Slight “LEAN” to the OVER 228.5 (-110) for a tiny wager if at all because I much prefer Memphis laying the points than the total in this matchup.

However, both teams play at a fast tempo and both teams are in the bottom-3 of defensive rating. Plus we’ve already discussed how Memphis can attack Charlotte’s defense but the Hornets have reasons to be confident they’ll have success on offense as well.

For instance, Charlotte gets out in transition at the second-highest frequency in the Association and Memphis gives up the fifth-most points per possession in transition. On top of that, both squads score the third-most paint points per game (50.0 PPG) and rank 20th or worse in paint points per game allowed.

That said, we are getting to the party late as the Hornets-Grizzlies total opened at 226.5 and has been steamed up by all the pro-Over money. My favorite play is the Grizzlies -4.5 (-110), but there’s a little value in the OVER 228.5 (-110).

Charlotte Hornets at Memphis Grizzlies odds, picks and prediction

Previewing Wednesday’s Charlotte Hornets at Memphis Grizzlies NBA odds and lines, with basketball picks, tips and predictions.

The Charlotte Hornets (12-13) stop by FedExForum Wednesday for an 8 p.m. ET tip-off against the Memphis Grizzlies (9-10). Below, we analyze the Hornets-Grizzlies NBA odds and lines, with picks and predictions.

Charlotte followed a two-game losing skid with back-to-back wins over the Washington Wizards and Houston Rockets entering Wednesday. Over their past four games, the Hornets have the fifth-highest rebounding percentage and ninth-highest net rating.

The Grizzlies have lost four in a row following a seven-game winning streak spanning Jan. 8 to Feb. 1 and included a 12-day layoff due to COVID-19 issues. A plethora of injury and COVID-related absences for Memphis is a major contributor to its recent performance.

Memphis clobbered Charlotte 108-93 as a 4-point road underdog earlier this season to give the Grizzlies their third straight victory over the Hornets. They also covered the spread in each of those wins.

Hornets at Grizzlies: Odds, lines, predictions and picks

Prediction

Hornets 118, Grizzlies 109

Money line (ML)

The Hornets have played pretty well over the past couple of weeks and their offense is humming coming into Wednesday. A big reason for the improvement in the offense is rookie PG LaMelo Ball has been sensational since being inserted into the starting lineup five games ago.

Ball is averaging 22.6 points, 6.0 rebounds and 6.6 assists per game over that span. As a team, Charlotte is sixth in rebounding percentage, ninth in assist to turnover ratio and 10th in offensive rating in the last five games.  Also, the injury to Grizzlies combo guard Melton is a major blow to Memphis. Melton has the highest on-off court net rating on the team (plus-20.2).

The bottom line is Memphis has too many missing pieces and Charlotte is trending up. BET HORNETS (+125) for a half-unit.

Play our new free daily Pick’em Challenge and win! Play now!

Against the spread (ATS)

Definitely TAKE HORNETS +3.5 (-110) for insurance on the money line wager. Ultimately, Charlotte matches up really well against Memphis.

According to CleaningTheGlass.com, Memphis shoots the fifth-highest volume of mid-range shots and connects at the sixth-highest clip but Charlotte holds opponent’s to the ninth-lowest field goal percentage on mid-range attempts. While the Grizzlies do a good job protecting the rim, they are 27th in 3-point defense and the Hornets are ninth in 3-point percentage.

Over/Under (O/U)

OVER 223.5 (-110) is the play because of all the Over-friendly trends and how these teams match up stylistically. The Grizzlies have a 5-1 O/U record and the Hornets are 4-2 O/U over their last six.

Charlotte’s previous two games went Under the projected total but the Hornets put up 119 points in both games so they did their part. Also, the Over has cashed in five of the last seven Hornets-Grizzlies games.

It’s a fairly obvious play so I won’t hit it too hard, but I’ll BET OVER 223.5 (-115) for a half-unit.
