Guerrilla is working on a Horizon Zero Dawn multiplayer game

Guerrilla Games confirmed a Horizon multiplayer game is in the works, following rumors about an MMO or other co-op game

It turns out Guerrilla Games is making a Horizon Zero Dawn multiplayer game after all. The Horizon and Killing Floor maker announced the unnamed game in a job post on Twitter, shortly after rumors started swirling about a Horizon Zero Dawn MMO. Whether this is the same project is another matter, though.

An internal team is building the new online game set in the Horizon universe, which Guerrilla says will feature a new cast of characters not yet seen in Aloy’s adventures.

The earlier rumors grew from news about a potential partnership with Guild Wars 2 maker NCSoft, who is reportedly working with Guerrilla to develop an MMO and will lead development on that project, which may or may not include cut co-op components from Zero Dawn.

Guerrilla’s Twitter post mentions the studio is hiring for external teams, which would presumably include any team working with NCSoft, and their Horizon single-player team, so it’s tough to guess who might be doing what.

The only thing for sure at this point is that a Horizon multiplayer game of some kind is in the works, and there’s much more Horizon on the way, even after Call of the Mountain launches for PS VR 2 – possibly even a PS5 remake of the original game.

A Horizon Zero Dawn MMO may be in the works

Sony’s foray into service games may kick off with a Horizon Zero Dawn MMO from the makers of Guild Wars 2

Sony may be working on a Horizon Zero Dawn MMO in partnership with NCSoft, makers of Guild Wars 2, a new rumor suggests. South Korean finance publication MTN reported that sources familiar with NCSoft and Sony’s plans said both parties entered an agreement where NCSoft would create an online game with Sony’s Horizon IP (first spotted by Kotaku).

MTN’s sources reportedly said that while development and hiring are already underway, Sony and NCSoft are still working out the project’s particulars. NCSoft is currently leading development, but Sony may join in and lend a hand as well, though whether Sony’s involvement will come from Guerrilla, Horizon’s creator, or somewhere else, MTN’s sources didn’t say.

Video Games Chronicle corroborated the rumor and said Guerrilla wanted to include multiplayer components of some kind in Horizon Zero Dawn and Horizon Forbidden West, but while the co-op elements were cut, the development team reportedly wanted to include them in future projects. You can’t get more multiplayer than an MMO, so perhaps what started life as a two-player experience ended up as this new project.

Whatever the case, Sony has yet to comment on the project, so it remains a rumor. However, the PlayStation maker did express interest in venturing into service games earlier in 2022 and moved to acquire Destiny maker Bungie as part of that initiative.

Meanwhile, Guerrilla is working on Horizon: Call of the Mountain for PS VR 2, set to launch on Feb. 23, 2023.

Horizon Zero Dawn fans don’t think a remake is necessary

Most people agree that it’s a bit too soon to remake the PS4 action-adventure title.

Rumors are swirling about a remake of Horizon Zero Dawn for PS5, and the overwhelming reaction is that it shouldn’t happen. Yup, we’re dealing with another Last of Us Part 1 situation.

There are a couple of reasons for this sentiment. For one, Horizon Zero Dawn came out on Feb. 28, 2017 — meaning it’s barely five years old. Secondly, it’s still one of the most beautiful open-world titles out there. It has barely aged, if at all. Sure, the sequel looks better, but this isn’t a generational leap we’re talking about here.

Below, we’ve put together some of the best (and funniest) reactions toward a potential Horizon Zero Dawn remake.

Horizon Zero Dawn is reportedly being remade for PS5

The PS4 title from Guerrilla Games might be getting a touch-up.

Horizon Zero Dawn, the action-adventure title from Guerrilla Games, might receive some sort of reinvention on PS5.

According to MP1st and corroborated by VGC, a remake or remaster of Horizon Zero Dawn is in the works. It’ll apparently feature all-new character models, better lighting, more fluid animations, and loads of tweakable accessibility features — pretty much everything we’ve come to expect from these new-generation updates. These updates should make the presentation up to par with Horizon Forbidden West.

Curiously, it seems there might be multiplayer too. More specifically, a campaign co-op mode of some kind. Reports on this aspect are less confident, though. As always, take all of this with a grain of salt for now.

It’s unclear if this project will be a top-to-bottom remake like The Last of Us Part 1 or merely a port with visual enhancements. The latter arguably makes more sense since Horizon Zero Dawn still looks incredible, especially on PC, but we’ll just have to wait and see.

Horizon Zero Dawn originally came out back in February 2017 for PS4. It quickly became a fan favorite among PlayStation owners and sold over 20 million copies worldwide. There’s also a small-screen adaptation coming to Netflix eventually.
