The first-ever Honkai Star Rail update livestream is coming down the line, and HoYoverse is shaking up the format a little

The first-ever Honkai Star Rail update livestream is coming down the line, and HoYoverse is shaking up the format a little. While the RPG broadcasts usually happen on Twitch first, with a pre-recorded version going up on YouTube later, you can stream the live version on either platform this time around. As for what to expect, if Genshin Impact – and some leaks – are any indication, we’ll probably see at least two new 5-star characters, a substantial new story update, and some fresh promo codes for free Stellar Jade.

The day Honkai Star Rail’s Jing Yuan banner first appeared, fans threw so much money at the RPG that the in-game shop broke. The 5-star character’s banner went live in China 12 hours before it did in the U.S. and Europe, as is always the case, and players soon noticed the shop page wasn’t functioning properly.

The shop page started slowing down to the point where it could barely process orders. Some players on the Asia server even said the game itself began lagging, though HoYoverse didn’t acknowledge that as a widespread issue. A representative took to social media and said the team discovered the problem was coming from the Oneiric Pouch page, where players spend real money on the in-game currency.

Perhaps that shouldn’t come as a surprise. Mobile analyst firm Sensor Tower reported that Honkai Star Rail brought in $20 million in April 2023, a staggering sum considering the game launched in the last week of the month. For comparison, Genshin Impact’s revenue for the entire month was $48 million, and that free-to-play game hasn’t had the same issue of players spending so much money that the shop shuts down, even with the release of highly anticipated characters.

Turn-based RPGs might be falling out of fashion, but it seems evident HoYoverse has landed on a winning formula with Star Rail, one that’s likely to prove even more lucrative as more new characters release in the coming months.

Honkai: Star Rail passes 20 million downloads already

miHoYo’s latest is already incredibly successful.

Well, it would seem that Honkai: Star Rail is already an enormous hit – as more than 20 million people have downloaded the gacha phenomenon already.

According to games industry analyst Daniel Ahmad, Honkai: Star Rail saw over 20 million downloads since coming out on April 26, 2023 – shattering most expectations people had before release. Not only that, but it’s outpacing the launch of Genshin Impact, developer miHoYo’s previous effort, in many respects.

“[Honkai: Star Rail] had over 30 million pre-registrations prior to launch. 21 million from China and 10 million from the rest of the world,” Ahmad said on Twitter. “Higher than [Genshin Impact] at launch. It’s already broken records by reaching no 1 on the iOS game download chart in more countries than any prior game.” 

The player base will undoubtedly rise as time goes on, especially once Honkai: Star Rail releases for PlayStation consoles – right now, it’s only available for PC and mobile devices. There’s no release date for PS4 and PS5 yet, unfortunately.
