Big Ten Football: Predictions for every Big Ten team’s record in 2023

With the 2023 college football season knocking at the door, here are the predictions for every Big Ten team’s record this year.

The 2023 college football season is rapidly approaching and at this time, every team’s hopes and dreams are still alive. Some may come crashing down sooner than others, but that is neither here nor there yet.

The Big Ten is always an intriguing conference to try and predict. Like it or not, the Big Ten East is a three-team race of Michigan, Ohio State, and Penn State. No one else has shown the ability to dethrone any of them.

The Big Ten West is a little bit more jumbled. Last year, there were five teams in contention until the final few weeks. Iowa and Wisconsin have been the most common representatives, but Minnesota, Illinois, and Purdue have made their cases and best efforts recently.

Entering 2023, the Big Ten has seen its fair share of new faces, coaching changes, and offseason drama that will all influence how teams perform this year. With that, the predictions for each Big Ten team’s record in 2023.

Cinderella Story: On3 lists Iowa as a darkhorse conference champion contender in 2023

Every year one team disrupts the landscape of college football and makes waves. On3 believes Iowa could be that darkhorse team in 2023.

Everyone loves a good Cinderella story. It is what makes the NCAA March Madness tournament so special and fun. Any team can win against anyone. Why not translate that to the football field?

It isn’t as easy with a 12-game season and water finding its level in football compared to a 40-minute basketball game, but it can still happen. There tends to be one team each year that comes from nowhere and shocks America.

On3 believes that the Iowa Hawkeyes could be that team that is not ranked and a little bit forgotten about who could be one of the darkhorse contenders in 2023.

The Hawkeyes are a punchline for good reason, but what if Iowa suddenly had an offense capable of scaring teams even every third drive? They were anemically terrible in 2022, but they went out and found upgrades at quarterback (Cade McNamara), receiver (Kaleb Brown) and tight end (Erick All). – Simonton, On3

Iowa did go out and revamp their passing game. The additions across the board are anticipated to make changes. From Kaleb Brown and Erick All to journeyman Nico Ragaini, McNamara will have options. Toss in an up-and-coming ground game led by Kaleb Johnson, and the Iowa offense has weaponry.

Defensively, Iowa returns seven starters including All-American defensive back Cooper DeJean off a unit that allowed just 3.99 yards per play last season. The Hawkeyes checked in at No. 1 overall in ESPN’s SP+ 2023 defensive rankings. So with Iowa poised to play elite defense and special teams again, simply having a serviceable offense — vs. historically awful — could be enough to win the Big Ten West in the final year of divisions and perhaps upset one of the bluebloods from the east. – Simonton, On3

The Iowa defense is one area that isn’t questioning if they can perform, but more so how well they can perform. This unit is loaded. Led by one of the best players in America, Cooper DeJean, the Hawkeyes’ defensive unit is littered with talent.

Being a darkhorse also takes luck and Iowa has that this year. They didn’t draw Michigan or Ohio State from the East and their toughest matchup of the year is at Wisconsin. Iowa has been granted one of the more clear paths to being a darkhorse.

Elsewhere, Louisville and new head coach Jeff Brohm have been tabbed as a potential Cinderella in the ACC. They also have landed a relatively smooth schedule. The Texas Tech Red Raiders have the chance to do what Kansas State did in 2022 and steal the Big 12 with some lucky breaks.

In the Pac-12, Oregon State is becoming a bit trendy as their new quarterback DJ Uiagalelei has all the talent in the world and joins a team that surprised many by going 10-3 last year. And lastly, the always popular pick that never fails to underwhelm, Texas A&M has a Mount Everest climb to take the SEC.

Ground attack: Iowa’s Kaleb Johnson named to the Doak Walker Award Watch List

After a dazzling freshman campaign, Iowa’s Kaleb Johnson has been named to the Doak Walker Award Watch List.

Running the ball well is something that the Iowa Hawkeyes have long prided themselves on. Block well up front and hand it off to a strong running back to wear down defenses.

Luckily, Iowa’s Kaleb Johnson is not only strong but brings speed as well to provide the full package. The sophomore running back is looking to expand on a freshman season that saw him prove to be a catalyst for Iowa’s ground game. His expectations and talent have landed him on the Doak Walker Award Watch List ahead of the 2023 college football season.

The Doak Walker Award is handed out each year to the most outstanding running back in college football. Some of the past winners are highly-touted running backs. Last year saw Bijan Robinson of the Texas Longhorns and recent first-round NFL draft pick take home the award. Featured alongside him as finalists included two Big Ten running backs, Illinois’ Chase Brown and Michigan’s Blake Corum.

Kaleb Johnson was outstanding for Iowa in his freshman year as he set the Iowa freshman rushing record with 779 yards. Johnson averaged 5.16 yards per carry and found the endzone six times. He played a minor role in the passing game with four receptions for just 27 yards, although Iowa could look to capitalize on that this upcoming season.

Expect Johnson to get the bulk of the work this year as Iowa’s lead back as he works to top his already stellar freshman season.

Gettin’ it done: 5 most impactful ‘glue guys’ for the Iowa Hawkeyes in 2023

A “glue guy” isn’t always the standout, but they do the little things right that add up. Iowa’s five most impactful glue guys of 2023.

Every team has the guy who does the little things that go unnoticed. They get less shine than other players and their contributions might not be as lauded in comparison. But that’s okay for those guys and you often see them embrace that role. Those are your “glue guys” and every team needs a handful of them.

In a way, some may say that the majority of the Iowa Hawkeyes‘ roster are made up of these players that do their job, don’t need the recognition, and just always gets it done. Even in that capacity, some guys hold things together by their contributions coming at the right time or when it matters most.

The Hawkeyes have a handful of these players that turn up in big moments, always are in the right place, or make life easier for those around them. Here are the Hawkeyes’ five most impactful “glue guys” entering the 2023 season.

Nine Hawkeyes named to Pro Football Focus’ 2023 preseason All-Big Ten Teams

Iowa has a strong showing on Pro Football Focus’ 2023 preseason All-Big Ten Teams with nine Hawkeyes named across all three phases.

The Iowa Hawkeyes have added quite a bit of talent this offseason and return even more. Their expectations are growing and that is right in line with what this team believes that they can do.

The talent is oozing and that is evident as nine members of the Hawkeyes, across the offense, defense, and special teams, were named to Pro Football Focus’ 2023 preseason All-Big Ten Teams.

Four are from the defense, three are from the offense, and Iowa swept both of the special teams spots on the first team. While these nine did get named, there are some glaring omissions as Luke Lachey, possibly the best returning tight end in the league, isn’t named to any team at all. Kaleb Johnson flashed as a freshman and expects to blossom even more but no mention of him either.

Defensively, Xavier Nwankpa could be the best safety in the Big Ten when the season is over but is absent. Jermari Harris, returning after injury last year, also seems to be getting dismissed.

Nonetheless, Iowa is very well-represented and will look to only expand on the nine individuals below that were named.

CBS Sports stamps Iowa Hawkeyes as best college football team in Hawkeye State

Aside from a few minor missteps, Iowa has always been big brother in the state. That is why CBS Sports named them the top team in Iowa.

Few things divide folks in the state of Iowa like the annual Cy-Hawk Series matchup between the Iowa Hawkeyes and the Iowa State Cyclones. There isn’t any gray area. You love one and hate the other. In a way, it is kind of what adds to the beauty of college football and in-state rivalries.

Iowa State did turn things around last year to capture head coach Matt Campbell’s first-ever win against Kirk Ferentz. It stopped a six-game losing streak to Iowa and an 0-5 start for Campbell against the Hawkeyes.

But, the rivalry is still rather one-sided. The Hawkeyes are doubling up the Cyclones with a 46-23 advantage in the all-time series record.

With the domination in the state of Iowa on the field and in recruiting, CBS Sports has named the Iowa Hawkeyes as the best college football team in the state of Iowa entering the 2023 college football season.

This discussion usually comes down to the winner of the Cy-Hawk Trophy, but not this year. Iowa State’s 10-7 win over the Hawkeyes was nice, but Iowa State’s 4-8 record is too much to ignore. Meanwhile, the Hawkeyes posted an 8-5 record, won five of their last six games and dominated Kentucky in the Music City Bowl. – Barrett Sallee, CBS Sports

The teams seem to be heading in opposite directions right now as well which doesn’t bode well for the Cyclones. Iowa has Cade McNamara under center looking to ignite a stagnant offense, while Iowa State’s starting quarterback is under a cloud of uncertainty. ISU starting quarterback Hunter Dekkers has been accused of placing bets on Iowa State sporting events, putting his eligibility in serious doubt.

Things will be settled soon enough as the Hawkeyes head to Jack Trice Stadium on Sept. 9 to take on the Cyclones at 2:30 p.m. CT.

Former Iowa OL Brandon Scherff one of CBS Sports’ Top 30 NFL players over 30

There is something to be said about longevity. Brandon Scherff has that and it has landed him on CBS Sports’ Top 30 NFL players 30 and over.

Making it to the NFL is only the beginning. Sticking around and making a long career out of it is the next step and possibly even harder. With the short career span the NFL averages, reaching 30 years old while still playing deserves kudos of its own.

One of those players in the above-30 club that is still performing at a high level is former Iowa Hawkeyes offensive lineman Brandon Scherff. His performance throughout his career has landed him on CBS Sports’ Top 30 NFL players over 30 list at No. 26. The former first-round pick of the Washington Commanders is now suiting up for the upstart Jacksonville Jaguars.

Position: OG | Team: Jaguars | Age: 31

Injuries robbed him of too many starts during a seven-year run in Washington, but he’s been a top-notch pass blocker when healthy. His experience is vital as part of the line protecting Trevor Lawrence in Jacksonville. – Cody Benjamin, CBS Sports

Scherff has claim to one of the best careers that the Hawkeyes have ever seen. His 2014 saw him named an unanimous consensus All-American, the Outland Trophy winner and the Rimington-Pace Offensive Lineman of the Year for the Big Ten. All while being a team captain.

That performance propelled him to being drafted fifth overall in the 2015 NFL draft. During his time in the NFL, he has earned four trips to the Pro Bowl and one nod to the first-team Associated Press All-Pro Team in 2020.

Scherff now anchors the offensive line for the Jaguars, who are led by one of the fastest-rising quarterbacks in the game in Trevor Lawrence.

Drew Stevens named to Lou Groza Award Watch List

After a freshman season that cemented his job as Iowa’s kicker, Drew Stevens has been named to the Lou Groza Award Watch List.

After a freshman campaign that saw him cement himself as Iowa’s kicker due to his accuracy and consistency, Iowa Hawkeyes kicker Drew Stevens will look to expand on that during the 2023 season.

Stevens’ ability to handle pressure last year was crucial for the Hawkeyes down the stretch of many games and his consistency gave the coaching staff trust to kick field goals. That combination has earned Stevens a spot on the Lou Groza Award Watch List. The award is given out annually to the nation’s best placekicker in college football.

During the 2022 season, Drew Stevens was stellar for the Hawkeyes. He was automatic in converting 100% of his extra points, going 24-for-24. On field goal attempts, Stevens delivered a 16-for-18 performance for Iowa, converting nearly 89% of his tries. He had a long of 54 yards.

Stevens also proved he can handle the clutch moments when he converted the game-winning field goal against Minnesota with under a minute to go.

Last year saw Christopher Dunn of the NC State Wolfpack take home the award. Drew Stevens will look to join Nate Kaeding as another Iowa Hawkeyes kicker to capture the Lou Groza as Kaeding was presented the award in 2002.

Stevens’ first chance to make his mark will come on Sept. 2 when Iowa kicks off its season at home in front of a sellout crowd against Utah State. In an ideal world, Stevens is handling low-stress extra point duties much more often than long, late-game field goal attempts.

Former Iowa fullback Monte Pottebaum retiring from NFL

Former Iowa fullback Monte Pottebaum has retired from the NFL. Here’s a look at some of the best photos of his time with the Iowa Hawkeyes.

The Iowa Hawkeyes are one of the few teams in the country that still utilize a fullback often in their run game. Few have done it as well as Monte Pottebaum did during his time as a member of the Hawkeyes.

The former Iowa fullback signed with the Pittsburgh Steelers as an undrafted free agent earlier this year. Pottebaum has since made the decision to retire from the NFL.

Pottebaum didn’t put up gaudy statistics while at Iowa, but he didn’t need to and that wasn’t asked of him. He did reel in 10 receptions for 85 yards and have 20 rushes for 82 yards during his career. Pottebaum did get rewarded with one touchdown run in his career.

Over 45 games for Iowa, Pottebaum used a hard-nosed mentality to meet linebackers in the hole and clear paths for his running backs paired with his long locks of blonde hair to become a favorite of Hawkeye fans.

Here is a look at some of the best photos of Monte Pottebaum as a member of the Iowa Hawkeyes.

Iowa one of nation’s ‘biggest movers’ in Preseason CBS Sports 133 Rankings

The Iowa Hawkeyes saw one of the largest climbs in CBS Sports’ Preseason 133 rankings. The move has the Hawkeyes cracking the top 25.

Roughly one month to the day from Week 1 of the college football season, we are itching for any sort of news, story, and morsel of football to bide our time as we near kickoff. One item that is going to only gain traction these next few weeks is how teams are viewed in preseason polls.

The Iowa Hawkeyes are right on the bubble in many polls and could quickly work their way into the top 25 with a strong start to the season that many expect. One of those outlets that expect a strong start is CBS Sports as they have the Hawkeyes at No. 25 in the Preseason CBS Sports 133 Rankings.

The Hawkeyes also find themselves among the “biggest movers” group of teams that saw large offseason jumps. Iowa saw the third-largest jump and moved up 21 spots.

The Hawkeyes neither had a notable assistant shake up like Texas A&M nor an outright coaching change like Wisconsin, but Iowa did do some work in the transfer portal to bring in quarterback Cade McNamara, and there’s a contractual call for the offense to score more points. I suppose that’s worth raising the floor of a team that has performed consistently at a top-40 level in recent years. – Chip Patterson, CBS Sports

The rise makes sense. Cade McNamara is going to make this offense go if he performs and that is what the Hawkeyes’ success rests on. The defense and special teams are extremely well-coached and should pick back up where they left off.

Curiously enough, the second-largest riser of the entire rankings is Big Ten West rival Wisconsin. The Badgers saw a 35-spot jump in the rankings, climbing all the way up to No. 19. It’s largely due to bringing in Luke Fickell to take over as head coach. All signs are pointing to the West being a two-team race between the Hawkeyes and Badgers.

Other Big Ten teams ranked in the top 25 include No. 2 Michigan, No. 3 Ohio State and No. 7 Penn State.
