Cameron Jordan calls Saints-Falcons rivalry ‘the only one that matters’

The Saints have had tense games with the Buccaneers and Panthers, but Cameron Jordan says the Falcons rivalry is ‘the only one that matters’

Rivalries often form in the divisions purely off playing each other frequently, especially when both teams are good. Not all rivalries are created equal, however. For example, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers tried, and still try, to force a rivalry with the New Orleans Saints when Tom Brady came to town.

Admittedly, Brady versus Drew Brees and Marshon Lattimore versus Mike Evans felt like chapters for an exciting rivalry. However, there never felt like enough true animosity between the fanbases to call it a true rivalry.

Everyone knows the Atlanta Falcons are the Saints’ true rival. As Cameron Jordan told Julian Edelman, “It’s the only one that matters.” There were some fun moments over the years with Tampa Bay, but Evans is the only one of the quartet still standing. No matter how many pieces come and go between New Orleans and Atlanta, the level of vitriol doesn’t fade.

“The only one that matters” is a great description of the Saints’ relationship with other teams around the division. The Saints have had a tense stretch of games with the Buccaneers and Carolina Panthers. They’ve faced both of those rivals in the playoffs. If either the Saints or those other teams weren’t good, though, the game didn’t matter as much.

Just look at their records against each other. The Saints are 56-55 against the Falcons, 31-29 against the Panthers, and 40-26 against the Buccaneers.

There’s only one pair of teams where records don’t matter, where hate week is mandatory, where animosity is eternal. That’s the Saints and Falcons. In Jordan’s words, “the only one that matters.”

This weekend culminates Ultimate Hate Week for Louisiana sports fans

It’s the Ultimate Hate Week is upon us. Saints vs. Falcons and LSU vs. Alabama on back to back nights in New Orleans and Baton Rouge

It’s the Ultimate Hate Week for the state of Louisiana. The New Orleans Saints face the Atlanta Falcons on Sunday. That’s always big for Saints fans, and moving from Dennis Allen to Darren Rizzi has reinvigorated the fan base.

The weekend ends in New Orleans, but it begins just an hour away in Baton Rouge. LSU takes on Alabama in Death Valley on Saturday night. Each event takes over the city individually, but when you pair both of them together it truly is a state wide affair.

It’s not the first time the biggest teams in the state have taken on their biggest rivals in the same weekend. LSU versus Alabama happens in the first two weeks of November every year except in 2020.

That was a part of three year stretch between 2019-2021 where these game were played on the same weekend. This Saturday and Sunday will be the first time since 2021 Louisiana will be able to partake in Ultimate Hate Week.

This is the first time this century Saints versus Falcons and LSU versus Alabama have happened in the same weekend and both games will be played in Louisiana. Let’s make it count.

Cameron Jordan on Falcons hate week: ‘Five days of screw them’

Cameron Jordan gets it. It’s Falcons hate week. That goes for everyone on Atlanta’s side, from the fans to Terry Fontenot:

If the New Orleans Saints had a player spokesperson, Cameron Jordan is on the shortlist of players to choose from. He’s probably at the top of the shortlist. He’s one of the most personable players on the team, which you can see as he makes his rounds in the sports media landscape, and he embodies the culture. Those two aspects merged on his own show, as Jordan laid out what hate week is all about.

“When Atlanta comes up on our schedule, we’ve got hate week coming up. There’s going to be five days of ‘Screw them,'” Jordan said, via ESPN’s Katherine Terrell.

If you’re on that side, you’re an enemy for a week, and that includes Terry Fontenot. Jordan doesn’t spare anyone, continuing: “The coach, the city, the GM that used to work for us. Everybody’s got to get it, and the city feels that.'”

Jordan is spot on. The city and everyone involved with the Saints knows what time it is. It’s hate week. This isn’t uncommon to hear from fans, and Jordan is one of the few players it isn’t shocking to hear this from.
