Liverpool eventually found a way to beat Bournemouth, but for a moment, it really looked like it might be a close one.
Sure, Liverpool won 9-0 on Saturday, tying the Premier League record for margin of victory. The Reds got goals from seven different sources, with both Luis Díaz and Roberto Firmino scoring twice. Liverpool started the game with a negative goal difference, and finished it tied with Manchester City’s for the best mark in the league.
But still, for 148 tense seconds, Bournemouth gave as good as they got. It was only then, in the third minute—you know, the late stages of a game—that their stout resistance was broken by Díaz.
A PERFECT start for Liverpool!

Bournemouth gamely hung on, keeping it close for an impressive three more minutes before Liverpool struck again, this time on a Harvey Elliott strike from 19 yards.

Bournemouth had given their all for nearly six minutes, but ultimately it wasn’t enough as lucky Liverpool kept somehow seeing their shots find their way into the goal. It was 5-0 at halftime, and when the teams came out for the second half, Bournemouth’s comeback hopes were undone by a nearly immediate own goal.
Bournemouth settled into a groove, though, only conceding once in the next 34 minutes. That had to be very worrying for Liverpool, who scored two more goals before full time just to make sure Bournemouth wouldn’t produce a dramatic finish.
