Big man Harry Giles III agrees to two-way contract with the Lakers

The Lakers have made a minor roster move in order to upgrade their center depth in the wake of multiple injuries.

All season, the Los Angeles Lakers have been hit with one injury after another. While superstars LeBron James and Anthony Davis have generally been available for most of the team’s games, the role and complementary players have largely been in and out of its lineup.

Right now, guard Gabe Vincent, forward Jarred Vanderbilt and big man Christian Wood are out. The absence of Vanderbilt and Wood has left the Lakers vulnerable on the boards, and they were already an iffy defensive rebounding team to begin with.

In addition, undrafted rookie center Colin Castleton is out with a fractured wrist.

To help plug the void created by the injuries to Vanderbilt, Wood and Castleton, Los Angeles is reportedly signing Harry Giles III to a two-way contract.

Giles was the No. 20 pick in the 2017 NBA draft out of Duke University. However, he has played a total of 158 games due to injuries and a couple of stints in the G League.

At 6-foot-11 and 240 pounds, he was regarded as a strong athlete who could run the floor and score inside when he came out of college.

Brooklyn Nets waive Harry Giles III after trade deadline deal with Raptors

The Brooklyn Nets announced on Thursday that they have officially waived forward/center Harry Giles III.

The Brooklyn Nets managed to get involved in the trade deadline madness after being quiet for all of Thursday morning. In the afternoon, the Nets traded Spencer Dinwiddie to the Toronto Raptors for Dennis Schroder and Thaddeus Young, but due to roster constraints, someone had to be waived.

After the Nets dealt Dinwiddie, it was reported by Chris Haynes of TNT and Bleacher Report, and later confirmed by Brooklyn in a press release, that the team waived forward/center Harry Giles III in a related move. Giles, 25, suffers another setback to his career as he works his way back from some major knee injuries that have robbed him of his athleticism and agility.

After signing with the Nets this past offseason, Giles appeared to be on the right track to getting back in the NBA as he was on an active NBA roster for the first time since the 2020-21 season. It seemed like a complete comeback from his injuries after Brooklyn guaranteed his contract for the rest of this season after entering the season on a partially-guaranteed contract that became fully guaranteed if he wasn’t waived by Jan. 8.

However, after seeing how this season has gone for Giles, it makes sense why he was waived at this time. Giles played just 5.1 minutes per game in 16 appearances this season due to Brooklyn’s logjam in the frontcourt with starting center Nic Claxton and backup center Day’Ron Sharpe playing well throughout this season.

It should be noted that when Giles was on the floor, usually when the outcome was decided, he showed glimpses of why he was one of the best high school players that America has seen in recent memory. With him being waived, Giles will have a chance to find a team that offers him more of a role than the Nets could.

Nets have guaranteed contracts for Trendon Watford and Harry Giles III

On Sunday, Brooklyn Nets head coach Jacque Vaughn announced that the Nets have guaranteed the deals of Trendon Watford and Harry Giles III.

NEW YORK — Trendon Watford and Harry Giles III have had vastly different roles throughout this season for the Brooklyn Nets as Watford has been in and out of the rotation while Giles has mostly been riding the bench. However, both players had something to celebrate on Sunday.

“I’m going to give y’all something today,” Nets head coach Jacque Vaughn said on Sunday before officially ending his pregame press conference prior to facing the Portland Trail Blazers. “Trendon (Watford) and Harry Giles, their guaranteed date is today,” Vaughn explained.

What made Sunday (Jan. 7) important for Watford and Giles is that, according to Keith Smith of Spotrac, “Teams must waive players on partial/non-guaranteed deals by January 7 in order for them to clear waivers before January 10.” Now that both players are on the roster past that date, they will move forward with the rest of this season knowing that their contracts for this season will be paid to them.

Vaughn announced the news with a smile on his face given how much that both players have been through in their respective careers. Vaughn didn’t lose sight of the fact that both players have more money to spend now as he playfully said “dinner is on those two.”

Nets’ Mikal Bridges on Harry Giles III: ‘we know what he can do’

Harry Giles III has not played much this season due to the Brooklyn Nets’ current center rotation. Mikal Bridges knows what he can do.

NEW YORK — Harry Giles III has had a rough go of it during his time in the NBA due to a variety of injuries that have seemingly robbed him of his best form. Giles signed an Exhibit 9 contract with the Brooklyn Nets coming into this season as he tries to regain his ability to contribute to a team.

“Yeah, that’s just the mentality,” Nets star Mikal Bridges said of Giles’ mindset to stay ready for his opportunities after Friday’s 124-97 win over the Washington Wizards. Giles checked into the game for the first time with 4:57 left in the fourth quarter and Brooklyn leading 111-87. In five minutes of court time, Giles put up eight points (4-of-6 shooting from the field, 0-for-1 from three-point land), two rebounds and one block.

“Most guys would sulk, know they’re not playing,” Bridges explained. “His attitude is great every day. You just wouldn’t think he had a bad day and he works so hard, he’s in the gym like working, you know? I feel like I’m one of the last guys leaving the facilities, ’cause I get treatment and all of that stuff and it’s not even close. Like, he’s one of the last guys to leave and always coming to the locker room dripping sweat. Just, I see him out there working hard. Just his energy and his vibe.”

Giles has been relegated to the bench so far this season as he’s appeared in just three of the Nets’ 21 games and those appearances came at the end of blowouts. Even though Giles has played at power forward and center at points of his career, Brooklyn head coach Jacque Vaughn prefers to use him as a center.

With as well as starting center Nic Claxton and backup center Day’Ron Sharpe have been playing this season, Vaughn has said that Giles does not play because of the two centers ahead of him in the rotation. It sounds like Giles will be riding the pine for the time being, but he will be ready if anything happens to Claxton or Sharpe and if either get into foul trouble.

Nets’ Harry Giles III is ‘always ready’ for his next opportunity

Brooklyn Nets center Harry Giles III made the most of his “great opportunity” on Thursday as he put up 16 points and 10 rebounds.

NEW YORK — Brooklyn Nets center Harry Giles III has had a storied history ever since he was one of the best players in the country during his high school days. Now, in his sixth season in the NBA, Giles is looking to get his career back on track with the Nets and had quite the performance in Thursday’s preseason game.

Nic Claxton is usually the starting center for Brooklyn, but he sat out Thursday’s game against Maccabi Ra’anana because of a sore glute. Giles had to go from getting his foot under him to hitting the court running.

“First I found out I was starting was about 25 minutes before the game,” Giles said when asked how long did he know that he was going to start on Thursday. Giles didn’t let the sudden call to action knock him off his game as he put up 16 points and 10 rebounds in 20 minutes of floor time.

Seeing Giles play the way he did on Thursday was good to see, not only for Brooklyn, but for himself as well. The last time that Giles played in an NBA game was during the 2020-21 season with the Portland Trail Blazers. Since then, he has either been unable to play because of injury or was trying to find a way back onto a team through the G League.

Brooklyn took a chance on Giles by signing him to a one-year deal after seeing him work out in the summer. Giles understands what performances like the one he had on Thursday mean for his career.

“I was ready, regardless of whether I started or not,” Giles continued. “So, I’m just thankful for that great opportunity.”

What Harry Giles III brings to the Brooklyn Nets

After officially signing with the Brooklyn Nets on Sep. 6, here’s what power forward/center Harry Giles III bring to the team.

Harry Giles III signed with the Brooklyn Nets officially on Sep. 6 to an Exhibit 10 contract, meaning that the Nets signed him to a one-year deal for the minimum. Giles III is one of the more interesting players that Brooklyn has signed this offseason given his history leading up to this point.

Giles III, 25, was considered one of the best players in his high-school class of 2016 and his high-school highlight tape is a testament to why he was hyped coming out of high school. Unfortunately for Giles III, he suffered a torn right ACL during his senior year of high school.

Despite the injury, Giles III was still able to play for Duke and only needed his freshman season to show that he was ready for the NBA. Giles III was the 20th overall pick in the 2017 NBA Draft, but his three seasons in the NBA, he spent the 2021-22 season in the G League before being waived due to a season-ending injury.

As it stands now, Giles III is trying to get his way back into the NBA. He impressed enough in his workouts this summer that the Nets signed him. What can he bring to the table at this point of his career?

Report: Brooklyn Nets sign Harry Giles III to one-year deal

According to Chris Haynes of TNT and Bleacher Report, the Brooklyn Nets have signed free-agent forward Harry Giles III to a one-year deal.

The Brooklyn Nets still have some roster spots open with training camp for the 2023-24 season just about a month away. It looks like they’re looking to fill as many spot as possible before training camp arrives.

Chris Haynes of TNT and Bleacher Report reported on Friday that the Nets have agreed to a one-year deal with free-agent forward Harry Giles III. This appears to indicate that when Brooklyn attended Giles’ workout in Miami in the beginning of August, as reported at the time by Stefan Bondy of the New York Daily News, they came away impressed enough to get another look at what he can do in training camp.

Giles, 25, came into the NBA with a lot of promise as the 20th overall pick in the 2017 NBA Draft out of Duke. However, it seems that a combination of knee issues and ineffective play have put his career in an uncertain place as he last played an NBA game during the 2020-21 season.

Chicago Bulls attend private workout for 2 players in Las Vegas

The Chicago Bulls attended a private workout for two former NBA players in Las Vegas.

The Chicago Bulls are in a weird spot as a franchise. Two seasons ago, they broke their four-year playoff drought. But this past season, they missed the playoffs entirely, getting bounced in the play-in tournament.

They are stuck in the middle, which is arguably the worst place to be in the NBA, but Arturas Karnisovas is determined to push forward rather than tear the roster down.

In turn, adding more talent to the roster will be key. Chicago signed Jevon Carter and Torrey Craig in free agency, but there could be more moves on the way. At the very least, the Bulls are keeping an eye out for potential additions.

According to Daniel Greenberg on Twitter, the Bulls attended a private workout held in Las Vegas for Dion Waiters and Harry Giles III.

Waiters last appeared in the NBA with the Los Angeles Lakers during the 2019-20 season, when he won an NBA championship with them in The Bubble.

The last time he played in more than 40 games in a season was in 2018-19 when he was on the Miami Heat. He averaged 12 points, 2.6 rebounds and 2.8 assists on 41.4% shooting from the field and 37.7% shooting from distance.

As for Giles, he last appeared in the league in the 2020-21 season as a member of the Portland Trail Blazers. In 38 games, he averaged 2.8 points and 3.5 rebounds on 43.3% shooting from the field and 34.8% shooting from behind the 3-point line.

Giles is 25 years old and eligible for a two-way contract, so should the Bulls show interest, he could be added to the roster that way.
