What condition the position is in: Assessing Raiders level of need at tight end

Taking a look at where the Raiders stand at tight end heading into the offseason.

With free agency a month away, it’s time to check in on the Raiders’ tight end position to give it a condition of either Strong, Stable, Unstable, Serious, or Critical.

Starter: Brock Bowers

Backups: Michael Mayer, Justin Shorter

Free agents: Harrison Bryant

Bowers broke all kinds of records as a rookie while leading all tight ends in receiving. This offense went through him. Mayer was away from the team a good portion of the season dealing with personal issues. He returned eventually and was a nice complementary piece, both as a blocker and a receiver.

Condition: Strong

Bowers is the best tight end in football. Mayer can be a decent number two, but that appears to be the best we can expect from him. Which may be enough. Though with Harrison Bryant headed for free agency, they will likely bring in someone to compete to replace him at the third tight end spot.

Raiders 2025 free agents includes most of team’s defensive starters

The Raiders have some work to do between now and March if they hope to not see their defense gutted in free agency.

Last offseason, the talk was about how many of their defensive starters were coming back because they were still under contract. Well, those chickens have come home to roost, and now they are facing an offseason in which the vast majority of their defensive starters’ contracts are coming up in March.

In total, there are nine Raiders players headed for free agency who were either starters headed into last season or ended up starting the majority of the games this season:

DT Adam Butler (16 starts)
DT John Jenkins (17 starts)
DE Malcolm Koonce (Projected starter, IR)
DE K’Lavon Chaisson (4 starts)
LB Robert Spillane (17 starts)
LB Divine Deablo (14 starts)
CB Nate Hobbs (7 starts)
CB Darnay Holmes (1 start)
S Tre’von Moehrig (17 starts)
S Marcus Epps (3 starts, IR)
S Isaiah Pola-Mao (RFA, 14 starts)

There are far fewer on the offensive side of the ball:

RB Alexander Mattison
RB Ameer Abdullah
WR Terrace Marshall
TE Harrison Bryant
T Andrus Peat
G Cody Whitehair

The Raiders are projected to have the second most cap space in the league this offseason behind only the Patriots. And they will need to use a good portion of that to make sure their defense doesn’t get gutted in free agency.

Raiders down top 2 running backs again Week 13 vs Chiefs

The Raiders will once again be without top running backs Zamir White and Alexander Mattison Week 13 against the Kansas City Chiefs.

Expect a heavy dose of Ameer Abdullah and Sincere McCormick again this week for the Raiders. Because top backs Zamir White and Alexander Mattison are once again inactive as the team prepares to face the Chiefs in Arrowhead.

This is the second week in a row the Raiders have been without White and Mattison.

Last week against the Broncos, Abdullah and McCormick filled in admirably at the position.

Abdullah led the way in touches with 13 for 65 yards. McCormick led the team in rushing with 33 yards on five carries (6.6 yards per carry).

Joining White and Mattison on the inactive list are CB Nate Hobbs, G Cody Whitehair, WR Ramel Keyton, TE Harrison Bryant, and DT Matthew Butler.

Raiders strongest position will be at full strength for first time in 2 months vs Chiefs

No position on the Raiders was expected to be more a factor in their success this season than the tight end position. They made it a priority in the 2023 draft, a priority in 2024 free agency, and their top priority in the 2024 draft. But the trio …

No position on the Raiders was expected to be more a factor in their success this season than the tight end position. They made it a priority in the 2023 draft, a priority in 2024 free agency, and their top priority in the 2024 draft. But the trio of tight ends they acquired have barely seen the field together this season.

Friday in Kansas City they take the field together for the first time in more than two months.

Brock Bowers was the team’s pick at 13 overall in the 2024 NFL Draft and he has been on an historic pace this season for a rookie tight end. Or really for any rookie or at any position. But he’s done it without either of the two tight ends who were supposed to make the position one of the more formidable in the league.

Last year’s drafted tight end — who the Raiders traded up to get in the second round — Michael Mayer left after the team’s week three loss to the Carolina Panthers and was placed on the Non-Football Illness list.

By the time Mayer returned in week 11, following the team’s bye week, Harrison Bryant was lost to injury. Bryant had been among the team’s priority free agent acquisitions this offseason after four seasons in Cleveland.

Thursday, Bryant, was removed from the Raiders’ injury report, making him available for the game for the first time in since he went down with injury in week nine in Cincinnati. And thus having this trio of tight ends available for the first time since September 22.

No time like the present as they face the rival Chiefs and their future Hall of Fame tight end Travis Kelce.

Raiders vs Chiefs injury report: Latest updates, news for Week 8

All the latest updates and news on Raidrers injury report ahead of a Week 8 game vs. Chiefs.

Thursday’s injury report brought mainly bad news for the Raiders. Not only was tight end Harrison Bryant still missing from practice with his elbow injury, but Jakobi Meyers was back to missing practice after returning on Wednesday, suggesting perhaps a setback in his hopeful return this week.

Jakobi Meyers injury update

Meyers has missed the last two games for the Raiders, and with Davante Adams also traded away, the Raiders were without their two starting outside receivers. Tre Tucker will start again on the outside with DJ Turner in the slot, but if Meyers can’t go, he will once again be replaced by committee.

Harrison Bryant injury update

Barnes left last Sunday’s game with an elbow injury and didn’t return. He was replaced by John Samuel Shenker. Brock Bowers is the unquestioned starter, but Bryant was showing up well as a number two option. Justin Shorter was on roster as well and would step into the third TE job is Bryant can’t go.

Maxx Crosby injury update

Crosby missed practice Thursday after practicing FULL on Wednesday. While that seems a bit strange, we will wait and see what Friday looks like because Crosby has missed multiple practices each week the past three weeks and still played.

Kolton Miller injury update

Miller returned to practice Thursday as expected. He has been dealing with an elbow injury but it hasn’t caused him to miss any games.
