‘Hail Murray’ named NFL’s Clutch Performance Play of the Year

The game-winning play receives even more recognition.

Arizona Cardinals quarterback Kyler Murray and receiver DeAndre Hopkins made NFL news and highlights with their 43-yard touchdown to beat the Buffalo Bills in Week 10.

The play now known as the “Hail Murray” was named the NFL’s Clutch Performance Play of the Year at the NFL Honors ceremony Saturday night.

The 43-yard touchdown pass came with two seconds left in the game to give the Cardinals a 32-30 win. The Bills had just taken the lead four plays earlier on a 21-yard touchdown pass from Josh Allen to Stefon Diggs. It became the second time in 60 yards that there were multiple go-ahead touchdown passes win the final 40 seconds of regulation.

It was the first go-ahead Hail Mary in the fourth quarter since Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers threw a 61-yard touchdown to tight end Richard Rodgers as time expired in the Green Bay Packers’ 27-23 victory over the Detroit Lions in 2015.

That play was earned a name like the Murray play. It is known as the “Miracle in Motown” and went on to win the same award that season that the Cardinals’ play won.

It was one of the best plays of the year and in Cardinals history.

Seahawks-Cardinals preview: Cardinals face pivotal matchup for NFC West supremacy

Following Sunday’s miraculous victory over the Buffalo Bills, the Cardinals must travel to Seattle a mere four days later.

The Arizona Cardinals have not swept the Seattle Seahawks since the 2009 NFL season. On Thursday, however, they’ll have the chance to break that unfortunate streak.

The Cardinals’ struggles against Seattle have primarily come at home, which they were able to overcome with a 37-34 Week 7 victory this year. Their successes against Russell Wilson’s ball club have been in Seattle.

Since 2015, the Cardinals are 4-1 at CenturyLink Field. Their lone loss was their infamous 2018 ball club(that loss secured the Cardinals’ starting quarterback in Thursday’s matchup- Kyler Murray).

The NFC West currently sits at a three-way tie for first place in terms of record at 6-3. Given the Cardinals 2-0 division record, they are technically in first place. Still, that spot could be gone with a loss to the Seahawks this Thursday.

It’s a pivotal game for both sides. Let’s dive in.
