Former Wisconsin Badgers forward commits to Seton Hall

Another former Badger finds his new transfer home:

Former Wisconsin Badgers freshman forward Gus Yalden committed to Seton Hall on Saturday.

Yalden entered the portal on March 28 after redshirting his only season in Madison. The former top recruit was a center for fan excitement coming out of La Lumiere High School. But he dealt with numerous off-the-court issues in 2023-24 and quickly fell out of favor with the coaching staff.

Yalden was 247Sports’ No. 122 player in the class of 2023, No. 17 center and No. 4 recruit from the state of Indiana. He brings an impressive recruiting potential to the Pirates, though it is potential he still needs to fulfill.

He joins a Seton Hall program that went 25-12 in 2023-24. Head coach Shaheen Holloway took over the program in 2022-23 after longtime head coach Kevin Willard took the Maryland job. These transfer moves are still Holloway working to build his program.

Yalden is one of eight Badgers to enter the portal since the end of the 2023-24 season. Several have found new homes, including Chucky Hepburn at Louisville and A.J. Storr at Kansas.

Greg Gard and his staff continue to work to replace those players as the program moves toward a pivotal 2024-25 season.

Former Rutgers basketball recruit Gus Yalden is in the transfer portal

Gus Yalden is in the transfer portal. The former Rutgers basketball recruit entered last week.

Gus Yalden entered the transfer portal last week. A former four-star recruit, Yalden was heavily involved with Rutgers basketball in his recruitment.

Rutgers could be an interesting landing spot for Yalden, given that Rutgers came in second in his recruitment to Wisconsin.

And with Rutgers needing a center following Cliff Omoruyi’s entrance into the transfer portal, there could be a need and a fit for Yalden.

Nicknamed ‘Gus Bus,’ Yalden is a 6-foot-8 center who was a four-star recruit when he was in the 2023 class. Rivals ranked him as the No. 114 player in the nation and the No. 22 center.

He has the ability to bang inside, rebound and block shots. But Yalden also has a nice outside game and can put the ball on the court.

Rutgers has been active in the transfer portal and will likely be looking for at least one center to come in and challenge for playing time.

Wisconsin basketball freshman forward Gus Yalden entered the transfer portal on Thursday morning.

He joined the Badgers as a four-star recruit and the No. 122 overall player in the class of 2023. The highly touted prospect and center of fan excitement did not play for Wisconsin in 2023-24 and did not travel to road games once Big Ten play began.

He is the fourth member of the Badgers’ roster to enter the portal this offseason, joining Connor Essegian, Ross Candelino and Luke Maertle. Star guard A.J. Storr also appears to be on the way out after declaring for the 2024 NBA draft earlier this week.

Head coach Greg Gard is active in the portal looking for replacements for senior forward Tyler Wahl, Essegian and others that may depart this offseason.

Wisconsin freshman Gus Yalden returns from leave of absence

Wisconsin freshman Gus Yalden returns from leave of absence

The Wisconsin basketball program was without freshman center Gus Yalden for the first week of the season after he took a temporary leave of absence.

The Badgers played one game without the highly-touted freshman, a 105-76 blowout win against Arkansas State. One of the stories from the game was the team’s depth, depth which Yalden should figure into as the season progresses.

That date could come on Friday night, as Evan Flood of 247Sports reported last night that Yalden is back with the team:

Wisconsin C Gus Yalden’s statement on his leave of absence

News broke earlier this week that Wisconsin freshman center Gus Yalden would be taking a temporary leave of absence to “address a personal family matter.”

Yalden was a four-star recruit in the class of 2023, and ranked as the No. 122 player in the class, No. 17 center and No. 5 recruit from his home state of Indiana.

“We are in full support of Gus and will always be here for him and his family,” head coach Greg Gard said earlier this week. “Gus is part of the Wisconsin basketball family and even though he won’t be on the court with us right now, we’ll always do everything we can to help him. We look forward to his return.”

Wisconsin basketball released this statement from Yalden yesterday evening:

Wisconsin begins its season on Monday at home against Arkansas State.

“We are in full support of Gus and will always be here for him and his family,” Gard said. “Gus is part of the Wisconsin basketball family and even though he won’t be on the court with us right now, we’ll always do everything we can to help him. We look forward to his return.”

ESPN expects the Badgers to be back in March Madness this year

Can Wisconsin return to the National Tournament?

The 2023-2024 college basketball season is still a couple months away, but ESPN dropped their latest bracketology, listing the Badgers as a seven seed in their projections.

Greg Gard and his squad missed the National Tournament last year for the second time in five campaigns, finishing with a 17-14 regular season record. The team struggled in close games, dropping six contests decided by three or less points.

They went on to advance to the semifinals of the NIT, losing to North Texas 56-54. It was a positive end to a difficult year, though the final loss was another close one that they let get away.

Now operating with their entire starting lineup back in Madison, the Badgers have added transfer guard A.J. Storr and a trio of impressive freshmen (Gus Yalden, Nolan Winter and John Blackwell), amongst others.

The familiar Wisconsin squad seems to be expected to return to their winning ways again in 2023.

LOOK: Jersey numbers revealed for Wisconsin’s incoming freshmen

Jersey numbers are out for Wisconsin’s incoming freshmen:

Wisconsin basketball’s class of 2023 is officially on campus and beginning to prepare for the upcoming season.

The group, led by top center Gus Yalden, is ranked No. 57 on 247Sports.com. Also consider the offseason addition of transfer guard A.J. Storr, and it figures to be a group that will make a sizable impact on the program from day one.

Wisconsin’s recruiting has taken off since the 2023 cycle concluded. Greg Gard currently has the nation’s 17 overall class in 2024 led by top point guard Daniel Frietag. With the Kon Knueppel sweepstakes still ongoing, it’s a class still with the potential to finish within the nation’s top five.

The Badgers will take the court before the 2024 cycle comes to an end. When they do, here are the jersey numbers 2023’s incoming freshmen will wear:

Greg Gard ranked in Top 25 of CBB coaches list

The 2022-2023 MBB season was a disappointing one for the Badgers, but their head coach Greg Gard was listed in the top 25 coaches.

The 2022-2023 men’s basketball season was a disappointing one for the Badgers, but their head coach Greg Gard was listed in the top 25 coaches by the College Basketball Report. Coming in at 25th overall on the 40-coach list, Gard remains highly regarded entering his ninth season at the helm.

In 2023, all five of the Badgers’ starters (Chucky Hepburn, Max Klesmit, Connor Essegian, Tyler Wahl, Steven Crowl) will be returning to Madison as well as the additions of four-star big man Gus Yalden, three-star forward Nolan Winter and three-star guard John Blackwell.

Over his previous eight campaigns, Gard’s squad has produced a 164-93 overall record while winning two Big Ten regular season titles and making the NCAA Tournament six times (counting 2020 when tournament was cancelled).

They missed March Madness for the second time in six years last season, finishing the campaign with a 20-15 record while losing in the semifinals of NIT to North Texas 56-54.

Some wanted Gard to lose his job, but he ultimately retained his role in Madison, though he could be on the hot seat if the season goes south again in 2023-2024.
