11 takeaways from Gus Bradley’s press conference

The Colts introduced Gus Bradley as the new defensive coordinator on Wednesday. Here are 11 takeaways from the press conference.

The Indianapolis Colts introduced their new defensive coordinator in Gus Bradley on Wednesday as he met with the media for the first time since being hired.

Though we still have to wait until we can truly judge his defense, Bradley did give some interesting insight on how his scheme differs (and relates) to former defensive coordinator Matt Eberflus. Bradley also discussed some of the principles that the unit will be made of.

Here are 11 takeaways from Bradley’s introductory press conference on Wednesday:

Report: Ron Milus likely to join Gus Bradley’s staff with Colts

Former Raiders DBs coach Ron Milus ‘likely’ to join Colts’ staff under Gus Bradley.

The Indianapolis Colts officially announced the hiring of Gus Bradley as defensive coordinator and it appears the coaching staff under him is being assembled.

Though nothing is official until the team announces it, former Las Vegas Raiders defensive backs coach Ron Milus “looks likely” to join Bradley’s defensive staff with the Colts, per Stephen Holder of The Athletic.

It isn’t yet clear the nature of his role should Milus join the Colts’ staff.

Milus has been one of the highest-regarded defensive backs coaches in the NFL and he’s been with Bradley since the latter took over as defensive coordinator of the Los Angeles Chargers in 2017.

Milus has had a long history of coaching in the NFL. He started working as the defensive backs coach for the Denver Broncos in 2000 and has had several roles all over the league since.

In 2013, he was named the running backs and secondary coach for the Chargers. Then he was solely named the secondary coach in 2014. He held that role (later switched to “defensive backs coach”) with the Chargers through the 2020 season, which wound up being the entirety of Bradley’s tenure with the team.

Milus then followed Bradley to Las Vegas when the latter was named the defensive coordinator of the Raiders. With Patrick Graham now taking over as the new defensive coordinator there, it makes sense that Milus would follow Bradley to Indy.

The Colts have a strong secondary when it comes to their starters and adding Milus would be a strong move for the entire unit.

Colts officially hire Gus Bradley as new defensive coordinator

The Colts have officially hired Gus Bradley to be the new defensive coordiantor.

The Indianapolis Colts officially hired Gus Bradley to be the new defensive coordinator, the team announced Monday.

Though it has been widely reported already, this is just making it official. With the team announcing the hire, they can now focus on building the defensive staff that will work under Bradley.

It will be interesting to see how the Colts go about building the defensive coaching staff. Four of their former assistants followed Matt Eberflus to the Chicago Bears while defensive line coach Brian Baker won’t have his contract renewed.

So with Bradley now leading the defensive coaching staff, the biggest transaction will be who he brings in to work with the defensive line. The pass rush should far and away be the biggest priority for Bradley and his staff.

The Colts defense has been solid during the tenure of Eberflus and now they’ll be looking to continue that success with a veteran coordinator leading the way.

Indianapolis Colts hire former Jags coach Gus Bradley as DC

Bradley, who led the charge in Jacksonville from 2013-16, makes his return to the division after one year as the defensive coordinator for the Raiders.

Gus Bradley is back in the AFC South.

The Indianapolis Colts are hiring the former Jacksonville Jaguars head coach as their next defensive coordinator to replace Matt Eberflus, who was recently hired as the next head coach for the Chicago Bears. Bradley spent the 2021 season as the defensive coordinator for the Las Vegas Raiders before being dismissed along with the rest of the staff with the head coaching change this offseason.

Before his stint with the Raiders, Bradley spent four years as the defensive coordinator for the Los Angeles Chargers. He also held the same role in Seattle earlier in his career from 2009-12, which landed him the job in Jacksonville.

Bradley’s time as a head coach was forgettable. He never won more than five games in a season with the Jaguars, and he was dismissed following a 2-12 start in 2016. He finished his career in Jacksonville with a horrendous 14-48 record.

Despite his failed attempt as a head coach, Bradley is regarded as one of the better defensive minds in football and is well-liked around the league. This is a solid hire for Indianapolis, who also interviewed outgoing Jaguars defensive coordinator Joe Cullen for the job.

Gus Bradley’s first task: Fix the Colts’ pass rush

One task stands taller than all others for Colts new DC Gus Bradley: Fix the pass rush.

With Gus Bradley taking over as the new defensive coordinator of the Indianapolis Colts, there will be one task he must achieve above all else.

Fix the pass rush.

An aspect of the Colts defense that has been a detriment for far too long, the hope is that Bradley will bring some new life into the pass rush with his Legion of Boom style of defense.

The Colts have some solid pieces in place for Bradley to work with. Defensive tackle DeForest Buckner should thrive in this scheme while the young talents of Kwity Paye and Dayo Odeyingbo should intrigue Bradley plenty.

But there is no denying that the Colts need to add more life to this room, especially on the edge. The Colts simply haven’t gotten enough consistency from their edge rushers during Chris Ballard’s tenure despite the efforts of throwing early-round draft picks at the wall.

Allowing players like Denico Autry and Justin Houston to walk in free agency wound up hurting the Colts more than anything. Now, the pass rush faces a monumental challenge of taking a step forward.

While Bradley’s defensive scheme will feature a lot more single-high safety looks than the one Matt Eberflus implemented, the front should look very similar.

Bradley’s defense mostly uses even fronts to get pressure and if there’s one similarity between the schemes, it’s the lack of a blitz.

Over the last four seasons, Bradley’s defense has blitzed at one of the lowest rates in the league.

Season Blitz Rate League Rank
2018 17% 30th
2019 13.7% 32nd
2020 16.3% 32nd
2021 12.1% 32nd

This means the Colts are going to be looking to get pressure with their four down linemen for the majority of their games. That has been an issue for the defense.

Even without using the blitz, Bradley’s defense in Las Vegas was still able to impact the quarterback in 2021. While they registered just two more sacks than the Colts (35-33), the Raiders finished with the fourth-most quarterback hits in the league (68).

Fixing the pass rush may take some time. It’s unlikely to happen right away. But the Colts have to find a way to improve their pressure numbers going into the 2022 season or else they’ll be just another fringe playoff team fighting for a spot during the final week of the regular season again.

Gus Bradley’s leadership stood out in interview with Colts

What stood out in Gus Bradley’s interview that landed him the DC role for the Colts?

The Indianapolis Colts have their new defensive coordinator in Gus Bradley with the hiring being reported on Friday night.

While Bradley and head coach Frank Reich will be working together to bring in the defensive coaching staff under the former’s lead, we now know why the Colts ultimately went with the veteran coach.

Though Washington defensive backs coach Chris Harris was thought to be a leading candidate at one point, it was Bradley who wound up getting the job. His experience likely played a part in the hiring.

But it was also his leadership qualities and desire to bring a certain culture to the defense that got Reich hooked, per Zak Keefer of The Athletic.

It was Bradley who ultimately impressed Reich with his scheme and vision — no, the Colts aren’t abandoning the 4-3 — in addition to his willingness to adjust as needed and connect with young players. Bradley’s emphasis on cultivating a culture of defensive identity also stood out in his interview this week. Reich knows with critical pieces in Darius Leonard, DeForest Buckner and Kenny Moore already in place, among others, the Colts have the makings of an elite unit. They showed flashes of it the past two seasons under Eberflus but never could maintain that level consistently.

Bradley has had three separate stints as a defensive coordinator (2009-2012, 2017-2020, 2021) and one stint as a head coach (2013-2016). In all places, he has been cited as bringing plenty of energy and leadership while getting the most out of his players.

Bradley will have a lot of work to do with the Colts defense, especially when it comes to the pass rush.

But given his leadership qualities, it’s no surprise that the Colts thought he was a great fit for their up-and-coming defense.

Twitter reacts to Colts hiring DC Gus Bradley

The Colts are hiring Gus Bradley as their new defensive coordinator. Here’s how Twitter reacted.

The Indianapolis Colts hired their new defensive coordinator in the form of veteran coach Gus Bradley on Friday night.

Now, the Colts will be looking to fill out the rest of the defensive coaching staff under him. But this is the first step in getting closer to preparing for a long offseason.

Here’s how Twitter reacted to the news on Friday night:

4 things to know about Colts new DC Gus Bradley

The Colts are hiring Gus Bradley as the defensive coordinator. Here are four things to know.

The Indianapolis Colts spent less than a week searching for their new defensive coordinator and landed on an extremely experienced candidate in Gus Bradley.

Bradley has a long history as a coach in the NFL that spans all the way back to 2006. His primary scheme as a Cover-3 defense helped develop what turned into the Legion of Boom with the Seattle Seahawks.

Here are seven things to know about the Colts’ new defensive coordinator:

Former Raiders DC Gus Bradley lands same position with Colts

Gus Bradley is headed to Indy as Colts new Defensive Coordinator

For those who were hoping there was a chance new Raiders head coach Josh McDaniels would keep Gus Bradley on as his defensive coordinator, I have bad news. That ship has now sailed.

Bradley has been hired as the new DC in Indianapolis according to the Indianapolis Star and confirmed by multiple reports.

Bradley had the Raiders defense playing very well late last season when the Raiders went on their playoff run. The surge was led by the pass rush, which is an area that has been a major issue for the Raiders for several years.

Along with being a well-liked and well-respected coordinator, Bradley had several of his former Chargers players join him with the Raiders, including Pro Bowl LB Denzel Perryman and the team’s top outside cornerback, Casey Hayward.

Other former Bradley players to make major contributions included DE Yannick Ngakoue and DT Darius Philon.

Hayward and Philon came on one-year deals, which means they will have to be re-signed if they are to stick around. The question becomes whether they will opt to do so with Bradley out.
