Browns dodge a dominant DT in Grover Stewart vs. Colts

One less dominant defender the Browns have to prepare for.

Riding high off of their shocking win over the San Francisco 49ers, the Cleveland Browns now travel to take on the Indianapolis Colts in Week 7. Unfortunately for the Colts, they will be without one of their top defenders and one of the key disruptors in the NFL as defensive tackle Grover Stewart has been suspended for six games.

According to Jake Arthur of Horseshoe Huddle, Stewart has been hit with a suspension for the use of performance-enhancing drugs. Stewart then took to Instagram to apologize for his lapse in judgment.

For the Browns, this means a team that has finally found some success on the ground for the first time since the injury to star running back Nick Chubb will not have to face the man known as Grover the Guard Butcher.

Sitting at 3-2 on the season, can the Browns take this opportunity to win a game they are already favored in before traveling west to take on the Seattle Seahawks?

Colts’ Grover Stewart suspended 6 games for PED violation

Grover Stewart has been suspended for six games without pay.

Indianapolis Colts defensive tackle Grover Stewart was suspended six games without pay by the NFL for violating the league’s performance-enhancing drug policy, the league announced Tuesday.

Stewart has turned into one of the premier run defenders among interior defensive tackles over the last few seasons, making his absence a noteworthy one.

He is eligible to return to the active roster Dec. 4, following the Week 13 game against the Tennessee Titans.

In six games (all starts), Stewart has recorded 20 tackles (13 solo), two tackles for loss and five quarterback hits. According to Pro Football Focus, Stewart recorded 12 run stops through six games, tied for the eighth-highest mark among interior defensive tackles.

With Stewart unavailable for the next six games, it’s likely the Colts will lean on Eric Johnson and Taven Bryan to fill the role. It’s also possible they look to bring in a veteran free agent known for stopping the run.

Regardless, this is a brutal blow to the defense as Stewart has been an integral part of the front seven.

Colts PFF grades: Best, worst performers in Week 1 loss to Jaguars

Here’s a look at the best and worst PFF grades for the Colts in Week 1.

The Indianapolis Colts (0-1) failed to pull off the home upset against the Jacksonville Jaguars (1-0) at Lucas Oil Stadium, extending their Week 1 winless streak to 10 consecutive seasons.

Despite the loss, it was a relatively encouraging outing from the Colts. They stayed competitive throughout the game and even hung tough amid several lead changes during the second half. The defense showed plenty of fight while rookie quarterback Anthony Richardson didn’t look overwhelmed at all in his debut.

Here are some of the highest and lowest PPF grades for the Colts from the Week 1 loss, as well as a few other notable grades thrown in:

Gimme Him: One player Colts would steal from Eagles

If the Colts could hypothetically steal one player from the Eagles, who would it be?

The Indianapolis Colts travel to Philadelphia, PA, on Thursday to play the Philadelphia Eagles at Lincoln Financial Field in their preseason finale.

In a hypothetical scenario, the Colts Wire staff can “steal” one player that sheds light on depth needs or talent upgrades for the Colts.

This week’s selection: Defensive tackle Jordan Davis.

Deforest Bucker and Grover Stewart are a highly underrated tandem with immense game-wrecking abilities who can stop running backs at the point of attack. However, the impact further down the depth chart, beyond Buckner and Stewart, has yet to bloom.

Enter Davis.

If it wasn’t enough to be the top player on college football’s best defense and part of the 2022 national championship team, Davis turned heads at the 2022 NFL Combine. He ran a 4.78 time during his 40-yard dash, the fastest by any player over 330 pounds since 2006 and potentially one of the fastest ever for his size. Additionally, Davis earned a perfect grade (10) on his Relative Athletic Score because of his rare measurables—something general manager Chris Ballard values.

During his rookie season, Davis was productive with his opportunities. He wracked up five starts during 13 games played and was named to the 2022 PFWA All-Rookie Team for his 18 total tackles (eight solo), four quarterback pressures, one tackle-for-loss, and one pass defended.

Adding Davis to the roster would produce an immediate impact and could provide some much-needed relief for Stewart and Buckner. Moreover, it could make an already stout run defense even better. Davis earned a 71.8 run defense grade from PFF.

Other players considered included wide receivers A.J. Brown and DeVonta Smith, cornerback Darius Slay, tight end Dallas Goedert and edge rusher Haason Reddick.

Do you agree, Colts fans? Would you pick Davis or steal an entirely different Philadelphia Eagles player?

Ranking interior DL in the AFC South entering 2023

Here’s a look at ranking the interior defensive linemen across the AFC South.

The interior defensive linemen across the AFC South range in variety when you take a look at each team’s depth chart.

The Indianapolis Colts and Tennessee Titans have elite players in the trenches and underrated veterans that deserve more recognition than they get. Meanwhile the Jacksonville Jaguars and Houston Texans don’t have the top names for defensive linemen but still have quality guys on that part of their rosters.

Let’s take a look at how they rank across the division:

Madden 24: Launch ratings for Colts DTs, DEs
