Watch: Grizzlies’ blast ‘Whoop that Trick’ on way to blowout in Game 5 vs. Warriors

On the way to a blowout win in Game 5, the Grizzlies’ arena made sure to echo “Whoop that Trick” loud enough for the Warriors to hear.

It’s safe to say Steph Curry’s pregame plan for Game 5 against the Memphis Grizzlies backfired.

Prior to suiting up for Game 5 on Wednesday, Curry referenced the Memphis slogan when revealing the Warriors’ planned to “whoop that trick” against the Grizzlies, per ESPN’s Kendra Andrews.

However, when the Grizzlies sprinted to a blowout win over the Warriors in Game 5, the Memphis crowd made sure to remind Curry of their motto.

With a commanding 46-point lead in the fourth quarter, the Grizzlies echoed “Whoop that Trick” throughout the FedEx Forum. As fans chanted the Memphis anthem, the Grizzlies’ dance and PA crew ventured towards the Warriors’ bench to sing in Curry’s face.

As the Grizzlies’ crew danced, Draymond Green played along, waving his towel and dancing.

Jokes and dancing aside, the Grizzlies charged to a 134-95 win over the Warriors in Game 5 to force Game 6 in San Francisco. Led by Jaren Jackson Jr., Tyus Jones and Desmond Bane, seven Memphis players tallied double-figures in scoring as the Grizzlies poured it on in Game 5 to make the series 3-2.

After a tense series with ejections, injuries and trash talk, the “Whoop that Trick” back and forth between Curry and Memphis will likely add another facet to the growing rivalry between the Grizzlies and Warriors.

With the series turning back to the Bay Area, the Grizzlies and Warriors will meet in San Francisco on Friday for Game 6 at 7 p.m. PT.

Grizzlies’ Dillon Brooks suspended for Game 3 vs. Warriors after flagrant foul that injured Gary Payton II

Grizzlies guard Dillon Brooks has been suspended for Game 3 against the Warriors for his flagrant foul two that injured Gary Payton II.

With nine minutes remaining in the first quarter of Game 2, Memphis Grizzlies guard Dillon Brooks was ejected from the contest after being assessed a flagrant two for a hard foul on Gary Payton II.

Following the foul, Payton II also left the game to the locker room to be evaluated for an injury. After the Grizzlies’ win in Game 2, Warriors coach Steve Kerr announced Payton II suffered a fractured left elbow from the Brooks foul in the first quarter.

Along with missing most of Game 2, Brooks’ foul will cost him Game 3 on Saturday as well. On Thursday, the NBA suspended Brooks for Game 3 for “having made unnecessary and excessive contact” against Payton II in Game 2.

Through two games, there’s been a player automatically ejected in each contest after receiving a flagrant two foul. Draymond Green was ejected in Game 1 after fouling Brandon Clarke in the second quarter of the contest. Both Green and Brooks will carry two flagrant points for the rest of the postseason. Four flagrant points will trigger an automatic suspension.

In Game 1 of the Western Conference semi-finals against the Warriors, Brooks tallied eight points on 3-of-13 shooting from the floor with three assists, two rebounds and a steal in 30 minutes.

Game 3 of the second-round postseason series is set to take place on Saturday at 5:30 p.m. PT at San Francisco’s Chase Center. With tensions between both teams high, expect the arena to be rocking.

NBA Twitter reacts to Ja Morant’s 47 point performance in Game 2 to even Grizzlies vs. Warriors series

See what fans and analysts weres saying on NBA Twitter after Ja Morant dropped 47 points in Game 2 to lead the Grizzlies past the Warriors.

Similar to Game 1, the Golden State Warriors and Memphis Grizzlies traded haymakers in a thriller in Game 2 of their second-round playoff series. However, instead of Klay Thompson coming through with a clutch jumper late, it was Ja Morant with the final say in Game 2.

The Grizzlies budding superstar dropped a red-hot 47 points on 15-of-31 shooting from the floor with eight boards, eight assists and three steals in 41 minutes. Morant also drilled five triples on 12 attempts from deep against the Warriors in Game 2.

Behind Morant’s performance, the Grizzlies notched the series at 1-1 with a 106-101 win in Game 2.

The Warriors struggled to shoot the ball in Game 2, shooting just 7-of-38 (18.4%) from beyond the arc on Tuesday in Memphis. Even the sharpshooting trio of Steph Curry, Klay Thompson and Jordan Poole struggled to shoot from deep, shooting just 6-of-29 from long distance in Game 2.

Along with cold shooting, 18 turnovers hampered the Warriors’ chances of keeping up with Morant in Game 2.

Steph Curry led the Warriors with 27 points on 11-of-25 shooting from the field with nine rebounds, eight assists, a steal and five turnovers in 39 minutes.

After the Grizzlies tied the series against the Warriors before heading to the Bay Area, the NBA Twitter community chimed in with different reactions. Here’s a look at what fans and analysts were saying on Twitter on Tuesday night.

Advice and prediction

With a final spot in the postseason on the line, the Golden State Warriors will host the Memphis Grizzlies in a rematch of Sunday’s regular-season finale at Chase Center. On Sunday, Curry torched the Grizzlies for 46 points to seal a 113-101 win for the Warriors. Yet, expect Friday’s contest to be slightly different if Dillon Brooks can stay on the floor.

The Grizzlies guard was able to defend Curry well, swarming the sharpshooter up and down the court. Despite his solid defense, Brooks fouled out of the contest with the game tied at six minutes remaining in the fourth quarter. With Brooks on the bench, the Warriors surged past the Grizzlies.

If Brooks can stay out of foul trouble, the Grizzlies have a better chance of hanging with the Warriors. However, the chances of Curry letting his MVP campaign come to an end seem slim. While the Grizzlies could keep the game close, betting against Curry right now doesn’t feel safe.

Best Bet: Over 221.5

Advice and prediction

As the Golden State Warriors are entering Sunday’s contest playing some of their best basketball of the 2020-21 campaign with five consecutive wins, the Memphis Grizzlies have kept pace with their own five-game win streak.

With both teams cruising before the play-in tournament, Sunday’s battle could come down to a pair of factors — homecourt advantage and postseason experience.

The Warriors have played well at home, registering a 24-11 record at Chase Center during the 2020-21 season. With Sunday’s contest in San Francisco in front of Dub Nation, homecourt should give the Warriors a slight advantage.

Along with home cooking, the Warriors championship experience could come into play on Sunday. While Ja Morant’s edition of the Grizzlies are explosive, their core is still young. Behind Steph Curry and Draymond Green, the Warriors should be comfortable in any situation that comes into play on Sunday.

Prediction: Warriors 118, Thunder 112
