Jets shake things up at kicker for second-straight week

Jets shake things up at kicker for second-straight week

The New York Jets are going to have a new kicker… again.

The Jets (3-6) visit the Arizona Cardinals (5-4) for a must-win contest in Week 10.

Rookie Spencer Shrader is set to be the man in charge of the kicking duties for the Jets in the important outing, according to interim head coach Jeff Ulbrich.

But that’s just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to New York’s kicker news.

Last week, Shrader and Riley Patterson were signed amid Greg Zuerlein struggling this season. Then Zuerlein ended up on injured reserve anyway and Patterson was named his replacement last week against the Houston Texans.

Now Shrader will get his chance as Patterson was released by the Jets on Friday.

In addition, there’s another new kicker coming to town. Anders Carlson signed to New York’s practice squad.

Carlson joins the Jets after being released by the San Francisco 49ers this week. Carlson was serving as Jake Moody’s replacement and now Moody is healthy.

This season, Carlson connected on all five of his attempts while subbing in.

Carlson was originally a sixth-round pick of the Green Bay Packers in 2023. He went 27-for-33 on field goals and missed five of his 39 extra points in his first season and then the Packers let him go.

While Patterson hit on all of his extra point attempts (no field goals) last week against the Texans, some point toward his less-than-stellar kickoff skills as a reason why a change has potentially come about.

The Jets have picked who their new kicker will be

The New York Jets announced a flurry of roster moves ahead of facing the Houston Texans in Week 9.

In doing so ahead of their “Thursday Night Football” clash, the Jets (6-2) have selected who will replace Greg Zuerlein as the team’s kicker.

It will be Riley Patterson.

The Jets announced that Patterson has been signed to the 53-man roster from New York’s practice squad.

Earlier this week, Patterson and Spencer Shrader were two kickers that the Jets added to their practice squad amid Zuerlein’s struggles. Zuerlein then ended up being placed on injured reserve.

Now Patterson, 25, has that opportunity to make the job his own.

Prior to ending up on IR, the 36-year-old Zuerlein had missed an NFL high six field goal attempts. The final one came last week during a three-point, 25-22, loss to the New England Patriots. Zuerlein also missed an extra point in that outing.

Patterson has bounced around in his first three NFL seasons. He has played for the Detroit Lions, Jacksonville Jaguars, and Cleveland Browns. Patterson has hit on 59 of his 67 career attempts (88.1 percent).

In addition to signing Petterson, the Jets:

  • Activated TE Kenny Yeboah off of injured reserve and released TE Anthony Firkser.
  • Signed OL Alec Lindstrom to the active roster.
  • Signed DL Takk McKinley to the practice squad.
  • Placed WR Allen Lazard, DL Leki Fotu on injured reserve.

Jets Wire will continue to provide all roster updates throughout the 2024 NFL season.

Jets sign two kickers to practice squad with Greg Zuerlein struggling

The New York Jets have finally addressed their kicking problem, and yet, it’s still not clear in terms of where the team will be going from here.

According to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero, the Jets (6-2) have signed not one, but two kickers, ahead of facing the Houston Texans (6-2) in Week 9’s “Thursday Night Football” contest.

But neither has been added to the active roster. New York has signed Riley Patterson and Spencer Shrader to the practice squad following the club’s decision to bring in multiple kickers for tryouts over recent days:

Patterson, 25, has bounced around in his first three NFL seasons. He has played for the Detroit Lions, Jacksonville Jaguars, and Cleveland Browns. Patterson has hit on 59 of his 67 career attempts (88.1 percent).

Shrader, 25, was an undrafted free agent signing of the Indianapolis Colts in April. Shrader only went on to play in Indy’s season opener as he was released once veteran Matt Gay returned to the lineup.

Shrader was three-for-three on extra points in that outing.

At the time of posting, it’s unclear if either of those two new kickers or if Greg Zuerlein will be booting the ball against the Texans. Zuerlein has not been released and is also on the Jets’ injury report this week.

While on the practice squad, Patterson or Shrader could be called up to the active roster to suit up against Houston.

Zuerlein has an NFL high six missed kicks so far this season.

Jets Wire will provide updates as information is made available.

A kicker competition is coming to the New York Jets

A kicker competition is coming to the New York Jets

Greg Zuerlein’s poor efforts might have finally cost him his job with the New York Jets.

The Jets (2-6) lost 25-22 to the New England Patriots (2-6) in Week 8.

A few common themes have following New York this season. First off, losses. Second, missed kicks.

Zuerlein, 36, missed a 44-yard kick and an extra point in the three-point defeat. He leads the NFL in missed kicks with six.

A day after the loss to the Pats on Monday, interim head coach Jeff Ulbrich announced there will be a kicker competition on Tuesday at MetLife Stadium. If someone impresses, Zuerlein could be on is way out.

“We’re exploring all the options right now,” Ulbrich said. “We really are. So we’re going to bring the kickers in for a workout, see where they stand and make a decision after that.”

It’s the second time the Jets are bringing in placekickers to tryout. Because it’s Round 2, it’s unlikely Zuerlein survives this time–Even with New York’s quick turnaround against the Houston Texans (6-2) on “Thursday Night Football” in Week 9.

Ulbrich discussing the kicker battle can be found in the SNY clip below:

Doink. Doink.

Grey Zuerlein of the New York Jets understands how the nightmare winds at MetLife Stadium can haunt a kicker.

He lived another evening of wicked winds on Monday against the Buffalo Bills.

Zuerlein hit the up right with consecutive field-goal attempts at each end of the stadium.

Jets’ Greg Zuerlein had an interesting, cheerleader warm-up in London (video)

Jets’ Greg Zuerlein had an interesting, cheerleader warm-up in London (video)

No one had a warm-up routine quite like Greg Zuerlein in Week 5.

The Jets (2-3) went on to lose 23-17 to the Vikings (5-0) in their Week 5 clash.

Before the game, as usual, Zuerlein got in some practice… but this time it was a bit different.

Perhaps due to some extra pre-game festivities with the contest being held in London, the Vikings cheerleaders got in his way. He didn’t let them stop him.

Zuerlein kept on going and warmed up with the Viking cheerleaders dancing around him. It made for a hilarous video.

Check it out below:

Jets kicker Greg Zuerlein showed peak focus warming up in the middle of a Vikings cheerleader routine

He was locked in.

NFL kickers are used to blocking out distractions and doing their best to stay completely in the moment to make clutch field goals. But it’s hard to simulate the type of pressure they face in those end-of-game scenarios during practice.

New York Jets kicker Greg Zuerlein came close during his pregame warmups before Sunday’s game against the Minnesota Vikings.

While Zuerlein was taking a few practice kicks, Vikings cheerleaders invaded the exact spot of the field he was kicking from. But Zuerlein didn’t let the routine run him away or distract him from the task at hand. The man was locked in.

And now we know how Zuerlein made 92% of his kicks last season.

Aaron Rodgers’ demoralized reaction after the Jets’ final missed field goal became a meme

Even with Aaron Rodgers, the Jets will never stop humiliating themselves.

Well, let Sunday be a lesson to everyone who started to believe in Aaron Rodgers’ New York Jets again.

With New York suddenly looking like a formidable Super Bowl contender, Gang Green dropped the ball in a pitiful 10-9 loss against the rebuilding Denver Broncos. The Jets converted just 4-of-17 third downs and were otherwise mostly ineffective against a Denver team that also didn’t offer much on offense.

It was all cemented by kicker Greg Zuerlein shanking a 50-yard field goal to lose the game in the final moments. When the camera cut to Aaron Rodgers after the fact, he looked so disheartened while throwing a towel over his face:

Oh, boy. We haven’t seen Rodgers this visibly upset in a LONG time.

Naturally, NFL fans jumped all over the opportunity for a new meme with the Jets’ quarterback.

3 fantasy football kicker value buys

A trio of final-round fantasy kickers to target.

There are few things more satisfying in the world of fantasy football than identifying a player or group to break out when your fellow owners don’t. With that in mind, it’s time to look at some possible sleepers for the upcoming season.

Contract details for K Greg Zuerlein’s new deal with Jets

The Jets signed kicker Greg Zuerlein to a two-year deal worth $8.4 million. Here are the details and what you need to know about the deal.

The New York Jets re-signed kicker Greg Zuerlein to a two-year deal worth $8.4 million. The Athletic’s Zack Rosenblatt has those contract details.

Of the $8.4 million that can be earned, $4.2 million of that will be guaranteed with $2.89 million being paid in the form of a signing bonus. For Zuerlein, the signing bonus is money that he will receive up front. Zuerlein can also earn $200,000 in per game roster bonuses—or $100,000 each season.

In 2024, Zuerlein’s cap hit will be $2.755 million and then $5.645 million in 2025, with the contract backloaded.

In terms of Zuerlein’s $4.2 million per year average value, that ranks 11th among all kickers in 2024. The $4.2 million portion of his contract that will be guaranteed ranks 13th, according to Over the Cap.

Zuerlein put together one of his best seasons to date in 2023, making 15-of-16 extra point attempts and 35-of-38 field goal attempts, which included making 18-of-20 from 40-plus yards. Overall, that averages out to a make rate of 92.1 percent. Compared to the previous three seasons, Zuerlein made about 82 percent of his attempts during that span.

With Zuerlein’s deal factored into the equation, the Jets now have $18.7 million in available cap space. However, what that figure does not include are the one-year deals for Chuck Clark, Isaiah Oliver, and Kenny Yeboah, all of whom were reportedly signed over the last day.

That $18.7 million figure also doesn’t factor in upcoming expenses such as signing the incoming draft class, which will take up about $10.9 million in cap space or assembling the practice squad, among other regular operating cap expenses.

In short, the Jets are going to have to create more cap space than what they have available to them at the moment. How much remains to be seen and depends on how aggressive they plan to be in free agency.

Right now, the guard market, in particular, is booming with big deals, while the tackle market and receiver markets haven’t had a ton of movement yet.

Along the offensive line, whether it be through free agency or the draft, the Jets have to add three starters to join Joe Tippmann and Alijah Vera-Tucker. They also need to add to the receiver room, along with building depth at safety and the interior defensive line.

Cap-creating moves that the Jets have at their disposal still include restructuring the contracts of CJ Mosley, Quinnen Williams, John Franklin-Myers, Allen Lazard, and Quincy Williams. They could also extend Tyler Conklin or DJ Reed to free up cap space. For more on the Jets’ cap situation, click here.
