Grant Williams: Being professional isn’t just about when you’re having success

I had a two-week span of being unprofessional, which I look back on and I’m disappointed in myself with,” said WIlliams.

Last season, new Dallas Mavericks forward Grant Williams had an inconsistent role with the Boston Celtics. He fell out of the rotation for long periods of time in the regular season and playoffs, even though he had performed well, shooting 39.5% from beyond the arc and being a reliable defender.

This frustrated the Charlotte native, and he reacted in an undisclosed and uncharacteristically unprofessional manner.

“I had a two-week span of being unprofessional, which I look back on and I’m disappointed in myself with,” explained Williams to the Boston Globe’s Adam Himmelsbach in a recent article.

“I had to be able to realize that being professional isn’t just about when you’re having success. It’s also about your darkest days,” he added, sharing that despite that stretch, it didn’t affect his bond with Boston head coach Joe Mazzulla.

“The thing is, professionally you can always have different opinions, different outlooks about yourself and the team,” he suggested. “But personally, that bond never changes … I always will love him as a friend.”

“Although it may not have gone how we both expected this season, we still have a ton of respect for one another. So I’ll always speak highly of him because he deserves it. He’s a good man and a good coach.”

Grant Williams on leaving the Boston Celtics, moving on to Dallas Mavericks

“It’s like when you leave college, you always think, ‘Will I be able to go back and see those faces again?’” asked Williams.

Former Boston Celtics forward Grant Williams is going to miss his Celtics teammates now that he is a Dallas Maverick, but the Charlotte native believes it was the best outcome for all.

In a recent interview with the Boston Globe’s Adam Himmelsbach, Williams opened up about the major change he is undergoing after his sign and trade to the Mavs.

“It was very tough leaving the players,” admitted the onetime Tennessee star. “That was probably the hardest thing, just because it’s the group that you built and accomplished so many good things with.”

“It’s tough,” he added. “And, organizationally, I had a lot of great friends there. It’s definitely difficult, especially when you spend so much time in your life in a place.”

“It’s like when you leave college, you always think, ‘Will I be able to go back and see those faces again?’” Williams asked. A frequent pregame workout partner of Jayson Tatum, the former Boston forward plans to make good use of his familiarity with the St. Louis native’s routine to mess with his friend.

“I’m still going to swat the (expletive) out of his shots in warm-ups when I come to Boston,” joked Williams.

Grant WIlliams on his exit to the Dallas Mavericks being the right call for him, Celtics

“It was one of those things where I think both sides just did what’s best for each,” said Williams.

[anyclip pubname=”2123″ widgetname=”0016M00002U0B1kQAF_M8169″]

Former Boston Celtics restricted free agent forward Grant Williams recently related how believes his exit from the team was inevitable and not solely driven by financial considerations in an interview with Heavy’s Steve Bulpett. While the NBA’s new collective bargaining agreement (CBA) and the financial implications of the punitive second apron certainly played a role, he suggests that there were other factors involved.

“The CBA can make it difficult for teams, but it doesn’t prevent teams from making the moves they really want to make,” said Williams of the Celtics’ decision to let the Charlotte native be signed and traded to the Dallas Mavericks.

Williams holds no ill will, however, stating that “it was one of those things where I think both sides just did what’s best for each.”

“It was a situation where I think I could have stayed and we could have had success, but with the position we would have been in with the logjam, it might have been smarter financially for the team and better opportunity for me to go somewhere else,” he added.

“But it’s one of those things where I wouldn’t have been mad if I’d have stayed, but at the same time I think we both are in a good space now.”

Boston makes Grant Williams trade official, pick up two seconds, pick swap

Per the Celtics, the ball club will pick up a pair of second round picks and the right to swap a third second round pick as part of a three-team sign-and-trade deal.

[anyclip pubname=”2123″ widgetname=”0016M00002U0B1kQAF_M8169″]

Via press release, the Boston Celtics shared that the trade sending Grant Williams to the Dallas Mavericks is complete. Per the Celtics, the club will pick up a pair of second-round picks and the right to swap a third second-round pick as part of a three-team, sign-and-trade deal with Dallas and the  San Antonio Spurs that also netted the Spurs a first-round pick swap, and the contract of veteran wing Reggie Bullock.

Left out of the release is the $6.2 million traded player exception (TPE) the Celtics will also gain as a result of the trade. The picks Boston will get in the deal include the more favorable of the Chicago Bulls or New Orleans Pelicans’ second-round pick in 2024.

The Celtics will also get the right to swap a previously acquired 2025 second-round pick (the more favorable of one possessed by the Washington Wizards, the Golden State Warriors or Detroit Pistons) with Dallas’s 2025 second-round pick.

Which members of the Celtics summer league team could earn a two-way deal?

Despite dropping their opening two games, multiple members of the Boston Celtics Summer League roster have produced impressive performances.

The Boston Celtics summer league team lost twice in a row. Fortunately, offseason action is about development and improvement rather than wins or losses.

Nevertheless, some members of Boston’s summer rotation have caught the eyes of observers. Jay Scrubb looks like a potential microwave scorer at the next level. Justin Bean has impressed as the steady hand in the rotation.

JD Davison has already inked a new two-way deal for the season, and Jordan Walsh is already looking better than advertised. Then we have Justin Champagnie, who will start the new season with a non-guaranteed contract, and Olek Balcerowksi, who has impressed with his mobility and occasional perimeter bucket.

In the latest episode of BlueWire’s “Green With Envy” podcast, the hosts discuss what they learned from the opening game of summer league and who impressed during the loss to the Miami Heat.

They also discuss the Grant Williams trade and try to find a silver lining before questioning whether Walsh, Oshae Brissett or Dalano Banton can replace him. Williams was traded to the Dallas Mavericks as part of a three-team deal after the Celtics decided not to match their offer sheet.

There will likely need to be a discussion regarding Boston’s offseason before the start of training camp, as there is a potential that the team has raised its ceiling but also lowered its floor. Of course, there is still time for Brad Stevens to make more moves to round out the team’s rotation.

Where does the Grant Williams trade leave the Boston Celtics?

The team has shifted its defensive identity and made, at least in the eyes of some, questionable roster management decisions.

The Boston Celtics traded Grant Williams to the Dallas Mavericks in a three-team sign and trade deal that netted a return of second round draft picks and a traded player exception (TPE) that has irked some fans. The Celtics have altered their starting lineup as a result of that and the Marcus Smart trade and lowered their floor while raising their ceiling.

They now have a seven-man rotation with injury concerns in the frontcourt rotation as well as with 2023 Sixth Man of the Year Malcolm Brogdon. The team has shifted its defensive identity and made, at least in the eyes of some, questionable roster management decisions.

From Grant Williams’ trade to Jaylen Brown’s supermax: catching up on Boston’s offseason

The action of the NBA’s 2023 free agency period may be starting to cool off, but we still have plenty to think about.

Former Boston Celtics restricted free agent Grant Williams got himself signed and traded to the Dallas Mavericks, with fans and analysts griping about the minimal haul the Celtics let the Charlotte native go for.

At the same time, several reports have surfaced explaining the reason why the Celtics have yet to extend Jaylen Brown to his potential $295 million supermax extension. The rumor that we might still see a Malcolm Brogdon trade looms, and of course there is always how Boston might get involved in the Damian Lillard-Miami Heat debacle.

The action of the NBA’s 2023 free agency period may be starting to cool off, but we still have plenty to think about.

What should we make of the Boston Celtic’s offseason moves so far?

What are the implications of the Celtics’ shift towards a more offensive-oriented playing style?

What should we make of the Boston Celtics‘ offseason moves so far? Are they further or closer to winning Banner 18 as a result of trading away Marcus Smart and Grant Williams while bringing on Kristaps Porzingis and a cheaper supporting cast?

What are the implications of the Celtics’ shift towards a more offensive-oriented playing style? How will Smart’s exit potentially impact the ball club’s leadership and toughness in the locker room? Can the team maintain enough of its defensive identity vs. the league’s toughest covers without Williams?

The hosts of the ESPN “Get Up!” show sat down together to talk over all of the above on a recent episode.

Take a look at the clip embedded above to hear where they came down on this version of the Celtics thus far.

How will the Boston Celtics’ decision to move on from Marcus Smart and Grant Williams change the team?

The Celtics’ current roster may not be stronger than last season’s, and additional moves are needed to emerge as a clear-cut title favorite.

How will the Boston Celtics’ decision to move on from Marcus Smart and Grant Williams change the team? The Celtics’ roster has undergone significant changes after losing Smart and Williams, and it remains to be seen how the team’s new roster will perform in their absence, particularly on the defensive end of the court.

The burden of leadership falls on Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown now that the Flower Mound native is out of the picture as the team looks to compete for a championship. The Celtics’ current roster may not be stronger than last season’s, and additional moves are needed to emerge as a clear-cut title favorite.

The hosts of the CLNS Media “Cedric Maxwell” podcast recently convened to talk it over.

Take a look at the clip embedded above to hear what Maxwell and cohost Josue Pavon have to say about the new-look Celtics.

Bob Ryan is happy for Grant Williams signing with the Dallas Mavericks

Ryan believes Williams made a wise decision by accepting a four-year deal from the Mavs worth $53 million.

A great many Boston Celtics fans are not fans of the trade that sent restricted free agent forward Grant Williams to the Dallas Mavericks. Famed Boston sports journalist Bob Ryan is not among them.

In a recent episode of his eponymous CLNS Media “Bob Ryan, Jeff Goodman and Gary Tanguay” podcast, Ryan reacted to the Williams trade, expressing support for the Charlotte native and acknowledging his potential in the NBA.

Ryan believes Williams made a wise decision by accepting a four-year deal from the Mavs worth $53 million, potentially becoming part of a championship team’s rotation in the longer run. The podcast host speaks highly of Williams’ value as an NBA player with high character.
