Notre Dame’s defense stifles Wisconsin, Fighting Irish cruise to a 41-13 win

The Badgers struggle late as Notre Dame runs away for a 41-13 win

In a game where Wisconsin led in the fourth quarter, the tide turned rapidly as Notre Dame dominated the final 14 minutes en route to a 41-13 blowout win over the Badgers.

The first half saw a Badger offense once again struggling for any rhythm, as Graham Mertz and the passing attack failed to get in sync. It was Jim Leonhard and Wisconsin’s defense that yet again kept the Badgers alive throughout the first half, holding Jack Coan and Notre Dame to a lone touchdown on a 36-yard strike to Kevin Austin.

After yet another defensive stop to open the half with the Badgers trailing 10-3, Wisconsin’s offense found consistency through Kendric Pryor and quick, underneath slant routes. Mertz delivered to Pryor for 8 yards to tie the game at 10 just five minutes into the third quarter.

With Notre Dame forced to go to their freshman QB Drew Pyne after a Jack Coan injury, Wisconsin backup DE Rodas Johnson made the first major play of his Badger career on a strip sack of the third-string QB to set up UW. The Badgers then took a 13-10 fourth-quarter lead on a Collin Larsh 27-yard field goal.

From there, Notre Dame immediately shifted momentum with a 96-yard kickoff return TD by Chris Tyree that gave the Fighting Irish a 17-13 lead that they would never give up.

Mertz struggled throughout the day, but those struggles turned into nightmares late in the fourth quarter. Wisconsin’s QB threw back-to-back interceptions, both of which Notre Dame returned for scores. Mertz finished with four interceptions and a lone touchdown pass on 18-41 passing for 240 yards.

Coan had a decent day up until his injury, as Pyne filled in admirably for the Irish. The freshman third-string QB went 6-8 in limited action, finishing with 81 yards and a game-sealing 16-yard touchdown pass to Austin.

Wisconsin falls to 1-2 on the year as Notre Dame stays undefeated at 4-0.

Graham Mertz’s ridiculous first half has caught the attention of an NFL MVP QB

The NFL MVP is taking about Graham Mertz after an unbelievable first 30 minutes

Through 30 minutes of his collegiate career as a starter, Wisconsin QB Graham Mertz has exceeded even the highest expectations that Badger fans had. It feels strange to take in, but this Badger team has done their damage through the air while struggling on the ground (by their lofty standards) through one half of football.

Mertz has yet to throw an incompletion in 14 pass attempts and has tossed four touchdowns to three different receivers. Even Kansas City Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes is noticing what Wisconsin’s highest-ranked QB recruit in modern history is doing:

Badgers in the NFL are also watching what has been one of the most impressive performances through the air in one half that Wisconsin football has ever seen.

Wisconsin has found their man under center.

BadgersWire Roundtable: Score predictions for week one against Illinois

Who wins on Friday night?

The BadgersWire staff is coming together to give you our week one score predictions. Will Wisconsin cover a massive spread of -20? Will Illinois find a way to repeat last year’s shocker? Here’s how we think Friday goes:

Wade: This season opener will be a game to clear up many unknowns, most notably at quarterback, running back, wide receiver, punter, and safety for the Badgers. It will be a learning experience for many of the younger players, who will be taking some of their first meaningful extended snaps. Wisconsin should and will beat this Illinois team, but the final score difference will not be as big as Las Vegas projects. Illinois returns a number of starters and key contributors from a year ago, which leads me to believe that this game will be a close match up.

Wisconsin wins 28-24

Ben: The Badgers are the far superior team in this contest and will enter with vengeance after last season’s defeat in Champaign, Illinois. They will take care of the football, shut down the Illini in the running game and limit big plays on defense–all things they did not do last year. Graham Mertz won’t “go off” as many are hoping, but he will do enough to keep the offense on the field and move the chains when needed. Jake Ferguson goes for 80+ yards and a touchdown, the defense dominates and the Badgers open their season 1-0.

Wisconsin wins 24-13

Asher: It will start on defense for Jim Leonhard and the Badgers. Wisconsin shuts down an unproven Illinois running game, and second-year starting QB Brandon Peters finishes with a mixed bag of big throws and crippling mistakes. Offensively, Wisconsin takes care of the football better than they did last year in Champaign, and TE Jake Ferguson takes advantage of Lovie Smith’s Tampa-2 scheme over the middle. Expect some early nerves for Graham Mertz, but also expect him to do enough to put this one out of reach in the second half.

Wisconsin wins 31-17
