NBC Sports to make history with all-women broadcast team for ShopRite LPGA Classic in October

The all-women team will call the ShopRite LPGA Classic in New Jersey.

NBC Sports will make U.S. television history this fall.

On Monday the network announced it will utilize an all-women broadcast team to call the ShopRite LPGA Classic on Golf Channel, Oct. 1-3, at Seaview’s Bay Course in Galloway, New Jersey.

Cara Banks will take the play-by-play duties with Judy Rankin and Paige Mackenzie as analysts while Karen Stupples and Kay Cockerill will serve as on-course reporters. Longtime producer Beth Hutter, who has produced LPGA coverage for more than 15 years, will call the shots behind the scenes.

“We’re thrilled to assemble this incredibly accomplished group of women for our broadcast of the ShopRite LPGA Classic on Golf Channel,” said Molly Solomon, executive producer for NBC Olympics and Golf Channel. “Our NBC Sports team features talented women at all levels – both on-camera and behind-the-scenes – who are essential to making our coverage a success on every platform, and we’re honored to celebrate their work as part of this broadcast.”

Earlier this year former Golf Channel employee Lisa Cornwell caused a stir when she aired out allegations of mistreatment by Golf Channel executives on the No Laying Up podcast, which led to a Washington Post report where women who worked at the network said sexism fuels a “boys’ club” culture.

In March of 2020 NBC Sports featured the first all-women broadcast for an NHL game. Earlier this year, Rene Hatlelid then became the first woman to produce the Indianapolis 500 on NBC. Lindsay Schanzer also became the first woman to produce a Triple Crown race, leading NBC Sports’ Preakness and Belmont Stakes productions on NBC.

The third men’s golf major of the year is the 121st U.S. Open.

Torrey Pines in San Diego is hosting the national championship for a second time. In 2008, Tiger Woods outdueled Rocco Mediate in an epic Monday playoff.

There will be limited fans in attendance, as was the case two weeks ago at the U.S. Women’s Open in San Francisco, but there will be gobs of live coverage on TV and on your phone.

NBC, Golf Channel and Peacock are teaming up to provide 45 hours of live coverage. Toss in the featured holes and featured groups and there’s more than 100 hours of live golf to gorge on this week.

NBC’s Tommy Roy Q&A : On bathroom breaks, celebratory martinis and Tiger Vs Michael Phelps

Peter Jacobsen isn’t prone to hyperbole. So when he says he doesn’t think he’s ever met anybody who love golf more than Tommy Roy, that is quite the statement.

“He loves golf and loves the complexities of the game as as much as a tour pro does,” Jacobsen said.

Roy, a 29-time Emmy Award winner, will be at the helm of NBC and Golf Channel’s coverage of the 121st U.S. Open. Or as Jacobsen put it, “He’s the Tom Brady in the truck directing traffic. When he speaks, everybody listens.”

Roy has done it all during an illustrious 40-year career at NBC, including the 2008 Olympics when Michael Phelps claimed eight gold medals. It was a one-week stint as a gopher at the 1978 Tucson Open that gave life to his interest in television.

One of his pet peeves as lead producer is to show all 156 players in the field during the first two rounds of the biggest events, even going so far as to have a staffer checking off names.

“Last probably half dozen years we’ve nailed every one of them,” he said. “At the 2019 British Open, there was one player that we missed from the morning wave. And Molly Solomon, who’s the executive producer of both channels (NBC and Golf Channel), went over to the world feed and they found a shot of this guy and they sent it over to us and we were able to get that on and say, yup, we got all 156 on.”

Roy’s soda-guzzling intense persona is legendary. Jacobsen said his Whoop stats would be through the roof. “He gets so jacked up. And so into it, that I think when he comes down, he probably has to go home and fall asleep,” Jacobsen said.

Ahead of a busy week that includes nearly 100 hours of live tournament and studio coverage from Torrey Pines will be available across NBC, Golf Channel, and Peacock, Roy made time to speak exclusively to Golfweek in this wide-ranging Q&A.

The tournament will be just 24 weeks after the 2020 edition, which was moved to December for the first time ever. A Lim Kim is the defending champion.

Leaked video of Brooks Koepka, Bryson DeChambeau reveals their personal feud is very much alive

If U.S Ryder Cup Captain Steve Stricker is considering a pod system, he’ll want to keep these two far apart.

Well, it’s not breaking news that Brooks Koepka and Bryson DeChambeau have enjoyed an icy relationship, at best. But if U.S Ryder Cup Captain Steve Stricker is considering implementing a pod system in late September, he’ll want to keep Koepka and DeChambeau far apart — perhaps rooms on opposite wings of the team hotel.

As a leaked video that surfaced on social media on Monday evening showed, there is no love lost between these two major champions. The video shows Koepka being interviewed by Golf Channel reporter Todd Lewis following his second round on Friday. Midway through his response to a question, DeChambeau can be seen walking in the shot behind him and Koepka sighs, rolls his eyes and loses his train of concentration.

“I didn’t putt well but I don’t think any of the guys were going to putt well with this wind. It’s very tough. I don’t know what the other guys have said or … I just found it difficult to read sometimes,” Koepka said. “…. Sometimes, um … I lost my train of thought, yeah. Hearing that bulls—t.”

What exactly Koepka is referring to is unclear. What DeChambeau said, if anything, is difficult to hear, but some responses to the social media post suggest DeChambeau said, “Just gotta start it on the right line.”

In any event, the Koepka-DeChambeau rivalry is alive and well.

Their public feud dates back to Koepka singling out DeChambeau for his deliberate pace, which led to an impromptu meeting of the minds ahead of the final round of the 2018 Northern Trust. Since then they have traded pot shots on social media, with DeChambeau critiquing Koepka’s physique and Koepka delivering a perfect response.
