How to Watch: The Memorial at Muirfield Village Golf Club

Here’s how you can watch Tiger Woods and the rest of the stellar field at the Memorial this week from the comfort of your home or office.

The Memorial Tournament is the second of consecutive PGA Tour events at Muirfield Village Golf Club in Dublin, Ohio.

The Memorial was pushed back from its original dates on the calendar (June 4-7) due to the ongoing global coronavirus pandemic.

Tournament organizers were planning on fans attending. It was to be the first event during the Tour’s restart to have fans but tournament organizers later decided not to proceed with spectators. Then on Monday, the Tour announced all remaining events this season will be held without fans.

Golf fans miffed with limited final-round live TV coverage of Workday Charity Open

Weather forced the PGA Tour to move up the Workday final-round tee times on Sunday. Those changes also messed with the live TV schedule.

Weather messed with the second round of the PGA Tour’s Workday Charity Open on Friday, with two separate delays totaling almost 2 hours, 45 minutes.

Saturday was just fine but with an expectation of more weather Sunday afternoon, the Tour moved up the final-round tee times, with the leaders starting just after 9 a.m. ET.

These changes always disrupt the live television coverage and did so again this weekend.

The original plan was for Golf Channel to show live golf from 1-3 p.m. ET with CBS picking it up from there and having the 3-6 p.m. ET window.

Updates | Photo gallery | Leaderboard

Golf Channel and the NBC Sports Gold app did have live golf for two hours on Sunday from 9 to 11 a.m. ET, but that was it. That’s when frustration set in for golf fans with no more live golf on TV right now.

Molly Solomon, Executive Producer for NBC Olympics and Golf Channel offered this explanation on Twitter:

“Golf Channel was live from 9-11 AM and CBS is currently streaming live coverage on multiple sites. They will have tape-delayed coverage at 3 PM. Golf Channel doesn’t have rights to current window.”

Chances are, whatever city you live in, you’re stuck with an infomercial on your local CBS affiliate and repeats of regular programming on Golf Channel.

But there are a couple options to stream it on your computer or your phone.

CBS has the live coverage available on cbsports.com. Typically, you’d need an account on CBS All Access to watch the live stream but CBS is making live golf available today without that.

You can also watch the Workday on a live stream on the CBS sports app.

In the 3-6 p.m. ET window on Sunday, CBS and CBS All Access will have a replay of the final round of the Workday. Prior to that, from 1-3 p.m. ET, Golf Channel will re-air what it showed during its 9-11 a.m. time slot.

Bottom line, get to cbssports.com immediately.

Brooks Koepka responds to suggestion that ‘he should have been fined’ for tweet

Brooks Koepka responds to Golf Channel’s Paige Mackenzie with a comment on Instagram about her opinion he should be fined for a tweet.

Shots fired, Part 19?

The list is growing so it’s challenging keeping up but Brooks Koepka is at it again on social media, keeping all us media types busy.

On Thursday, Golf Digest posted a photo of Koepka on Instagram to solicit photo captions. It’s always a fun game to play and this particular image showed a frustrated Koepka, rubbing his forehead while sitting on a tee-box marker on the fifth hole.

He played the back nine first so it was his 12th hole during the first round at the Workday Charity Open, and it wasn’t going all that great, as he carded three bogeys and a double before making the turn. He turned things around a bit with three birdies on his last nine holes but finished the day 2 over.

Back to the photo. Koepka replied to the “caption this” Instagram post with this:

When you hear that annoying voice on tv and look up and see it’s @paigegolf.

That would be Paige Mackenzie of Golf Channel’s Morning Drive show, who said that Koepka should be fined for his Twitter post on Monday in which Koepka was taking a shot, we all assume, at Bryson DeChambeau with a Kenny Powers GIF, although he didn’t specifically mention him.

Mackenzie called the tweet “completely unprofessional. It’s beyond ‘shots fired’ and I think he should’ve been fined by the PGA Tour and I certainly hope that he is,” she said on the show. “You don’t treat your fellow competitors that way.”

We can probably assume that Koepka doesn’t agree with Mackenzie’s position.

How to Watch: Workday Charity Open at Muirfield Village Golf Club

TV, streaming and radio information for the PGA Tour’s visit to TPC River Highlands for the 2020 Travelers Championship.

After the John Deere Classic was canceled in May, Muirfield Village Golf Club stepped up for a fortnight of PGA Tour golf that’s been affectionately dubbed the Dublin Double. Muirfield will take on a slightly different look this week for the Workday Charity Open, which will serve as a prelude to next week’s Memorial Tournament, a staple of the summer calendar.

The Workday Charity Open features a deep field, but no Tiger Woods.

Golf Channel announces major layoffs coming to Orlando-based staff

The NBC-owned property plans to consolidate in Stamford, Connecticut, later this year after leaving longtime Orlando headquarters

The Golf Channel on Monday told most of its Orlando-based staff that it would be laid off starting August 29, then allowed those staffers to reapply for a smaller pool of jobs.

The Golf Channel, owned by NBC, announced in February that it would move its offices from Orlando to Stamford, Connecticut, starting later this year as part of a corporate consolidation.

In a company-wide Microsoft Teams call at 1 p.m. ET, a Golf Channel executive and a human resources representative informed employees of the latest plan regarding its move.

All employees will be allowed to reapply for their jobs – if they’re still available. Those whose jobs are eliminated in Phase I will find out as early as Tuesday that their current jobs will end August 29. Those in Phase II will be let go sometime between Oct. 31 and Dec. 31.

“As we announced in February, Golf Channel will be moving its media operations primarily to NBC Sports’ headquarters in Stamford, Conn., by year-end, while GOLFNOW and GOLFPASS will continue to operate from Orlando,” a Golf Channel spokesman said in a statement to Golfweek on Monday. “This week, we’re moving forward with our next phase with date notifications for impacted employees. As our business continues to evolve, NBC Sports is committed to delivering world-class golf coverage for our loyal audiences, and serving golfers’ needs through our portfolio of industry-leading technology and services.”

It was unclear what percentage of the staff will be let go, but only a small fraction of existing jobs are expected to be made available for relocation to Stamford. Most production jobs are expected to be filled by people already employed there.

The lost jobs come in all categories, from camera operators to producers to website writers, Golfweek was told by several people familiar with the layoffs, all of whom spoke on condition of anonymity since they are not authorized to address the matter publicly.

Golf Channel has become part of the fabric of the game, with more live tournament coverage than all other U.S. networks combined. Golf Channel is televised in more than 70 countries and nine languages.

Beginning in 2013, nearly all of the operations for NBC Sports and NBC Sports Network began to be based out of a Stamford facility. The move was made mainly to take advantage of tax credits given by the state of Connecticut. Golf Channel has been based in Orlando since its launch in 1995.
