The 2020 Rocket Mortgage Classic will get underway on Thursday with Round 1. While it won’t be the high profile tournament as weeks past we’ll still get to see some of the top-10 players in golf.

The current leader is Doc Redman (-7) in the first round followed by Peter Malnati (-6)and a group of seven tied for third, including Rickie Fowler (-5).

The PGA Tour is back with its first event in over three months, see all of your favorite golfers go head to head this weekend.

The PGA Tour is back this week with the Charles Schwab Challenge at Colonial Country Club in Fort Worth, Texas. This will be the first PGA Tour event in over three months and with the tournament expanding its field this year from 120 to 148 players, we should see the leaderboard packed with the best golfers in the world.

With the expanded field this year, fans will get a lot of golf for the first couple of days of the tournament. Farmers Insurance will pledge $1 million dollars and back an eagle and birdies pool to benefit Off Their Plate, a charity that helps COVID healthcare and frontline workers.

Rules for today’s match from the Golf Channel:

“With all money going to charity, both teams will start with $500,000 in the bank. From there, hole values will increase as the match continues: Nos. 1-6 will be worth $50,000 each, while Nos. 7-16 will be worth $100,000. The 17th hole will be worth $200,000 while No. 18 will feature a $500,000 skin.”

“In the event of any ties, the dollar values will carry over from hole to hole. If the 18th hole is tied and play concludes before 5:45 p.m. ET, players will head to the par-3 17th and play it from approximately 125 yards. If the teams are still tied, they would return to the 17th tee and decide the remaining skins and money by a closest-to-the-pin contest

If play concludes after 5:45 p.m. ET and the teams remain tied, only the closest-to-the-pin option on No. 17 will be used.

Additional bonus money will be awarded for low scores, with players earning an extra $25,000 per birdie, $50,000 per eagle, and $150,000 per hole-in-one or double eagle. All putts for birdies or better must be holed and won’t subject to concession, even if the putt doesn’t affect the team score.”

Tiger Woods makes his 2020 debut in the Farmers Insurance Open at Torrey Pines Golf Course on Thursday. Not only is this the first time Woods tees it up competitively in the new year, but it’s his chance at breaking a longstanding PGA Tour record. Tiger has won this tournament seven times in his career. If he does it an eighth time, he’ll break a tie with Sam Snead and hold the all-time record on tour with 83 wins.

Despite having won a total of eight times at Torrey Pines (seven Farmers, one U.S. Open), Tiger is not the betting favorite entering the tournament. Instead, the players in front of him are Rory McIlroy and Jon Rahm, who won the tournament in 2017.

Nine of the top 20 ranked players in the world will be in the field competing for a total prize purse of $7.5 million. World No. 1 Brooks Koepka is back from injury, but will not take part this weekend. Xander Schauffele, Justin Rose, Patrick Reed, and Tony Finau will also take part.

Rose is the reigning champion after shooting 21 under to defeat Adam Scott by two strokes in 2019. Jason Day, Brandt Snedeker, Bubba Watson, and Nick Watney are the other past winners littered amongst the field.

Tiger Woods co-holds the tournament record with a total score of 22 under, which he put up in a 1999 win. The world-renowned superstar is coming off captaining the USA to a dramatic come from behind Presidents Cup victory in Australia to close out 2019. A break from the game could cause a little rust, but if he shakes it off and rediscovers that same form, history could be broken.
