GoldenEye 007 on Nintendo Switch is finally happening

Microsoft and Nintendo are bringing James Bond to Xbox and the Switch, but getting GoldenEye 007 multiplayer to work isn’t so simple

Microsoft and Nintendo are bringing GoldenEye 007 back for Xbox and the Switch on Jan. 27, 2023. If you’re hoping to play GoldenEye 007 multiplayer, though, you might be a bit disappointed (thanks, The Verge).

Nintendo is putting the original Nintendo 64 game on its Switch Online subscription service’s expansion pass, complete with online multiplayer modes. Like the other N64 games Nintendo offers, GoldenEye 007 will be an emulated version of Rare’s initial release, although it comes with online multiplayer modes as well.

Microsoft is releasing an updated version of the game, similar to enhanced editions of other classic Xbox games. GoldenEye 007 on Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S will feature updated control options, achievements, and support for 4K Ultra HD – but no online multiplayer. The classic shooter will also be available on Xbox Game Pass, and if you own Rare Replay, you can download it for free.

This marks the first time the classic is available to play in decades. Rare first released GoldenEye 007 in 1997, and like Banjo-Kazooie, the game existed in a sort of void after Microsoft bought the studio. GoldenEye 007 never showed up on Nintendo’s virtual consoles for the Wii or Wii U, nor did Microsoft release it on Xbox 360.

Goldeneye 007 remaster is reportedly on hold due to war in Ukraine

Industry insiders claim that the project is ‘in limbo’ for now.

Rumors of the Goldeneye 007 remaster for Xbox consoles have been swirling about all year. Though several reputable sources now claim the project is on hold due to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.

Many were expecting that Goldeneye 007 would turn up at the Xbox & Bethesda Games Showcase last month, especially with several achievement listings more or less confirming the game is in development. However, that (obviously) didn’t happen. On Sunday, well-known industry insider and Giant Bomb reporter Jeff Grubb spoke briefly about the remaster’s current status.

Goldeneye is still in limbo because of the war,” Grubb said on Twitter. “1 vs. 100‘s team lead left Microsoft. I don’t know what that means for the game.”

Eurogamer went on to corroborate Grubb’s claim. Microsoft hasn’t officially announced anything regarding a Goldeneye 007 remaster one way or another. Though the recent trademark renewal all but confirms the beloved N64 first-person shooter will likely make a comeback eventually.

Russia’s invasion of Ukraine earlier this year has significantly impacted the games industry. Most notably, Stalker 2: Heart of Chornobyl developer GSC Game World delayed the game until 2023, as the studio relocated to finish development. Several companies, including Microsoft, Sony, CD Projekt Red, Electronic Arts and many others, have either stopped doing business in Russia or donated towards humanitarian relief efforts in Ukraine.

Goldeneye 007 making-of documentary is coming out on June 27

Goldenera will provide an in-depth look at the classic N64 shooter’s creation and legacy.

Fans are still enamored with Goldeneye 007 nearly 25 years after its release, and an upcoming documentary is going into why.

On Wednesday, Altitude Films released the first-ever trailer for Goldenera, a feature-length film about Goldeneye 007’s creation and enduring legacy. Australian filmmaker Drew Roller is a massive fan of the classic N64 shooter, and will dive deep into its history with Goldenera.

GoldenEye 007 wasn’t just an obsession for me in the late 1990s; it inspired my career, and continues to influence me to this day,” Roller said in a press release. “[It] didn’t just influence who I am – through speaking to so many game industry experts, it’s clear it informed a lot of other careers. And perhaps more so, the game went on to shape titles that have become phenomena of popular culture, such as Call of Duty and Halo. Equally, GoldenEye 007 introduced design conventions now standard in countless successful titles.”

Watch the new Goldenera trailer for yourself below.

Goldenera will be available via the Altitude Films website on June 29, 2022. It’s also coming to other digital platforms, but there is no word on what those might be yet.

Between the recent rumors of a Goldeneye 007 remaster, the timing for this film couldn’t be better.

Goldeneye 007 achievement listing hints that remaster is imminent

The classic FPS is probably coming back.

The games industry’s worst-kept secret may as well be a surefire bet by this point. Yup, there are more Goldeneye 007 remaster whispers floating around.

On Sunday, well-known insider Wario64 pointed out that Goldeneye 007 achievements are on the official Xbox website. Some include beating classic missions like Dam and Facility or finishing the entire game on 00 Agent difficulty. Let’s list some examples below.

  • Welcome Back, 007 – You completed the GoldenEye story on Agent difficulty.
  • Double ZZZZAP! – You unlocked 2x Lasers by completing Aztec on Secret Agent in 9:00 or Less.
  • Better Than 2x Klobbs – You unlocked 2x RC-P90s by completing Caverns on 00 Agent in 9:30 or less.
  • Splash Damage – You unlocked Paintball Mode by completing Dam on Secret Agent in 2:40 or less.
  • Licence to Kill – You scored 100 kills in multiplayer matches over time.

More than 100 kills in multiplayer, eh? Every 1990s kid should unlock this one by default since we already did so back in the day. Also, I forgot there was a paintball mode. Remember when first-person shooters were goofy? Ah, good times.

By this point, the Goldeneye 007 remaster is more-or-less confirmed. The trademark renewal several months ago already made things fairly transparent, so all that’s left is an official announcement. If I were a betting man, the upcoming Xbox and Bethesda showcase seems most likely for an unveiling. Either that or Summer Game Fest.
