Chris Godwin’s breakout season in 2019 for the Buccaneers helped the third-year receiver earn a Pro Bowl selection and Second-Team All-Pro honors, establishing himself as a certified star alongside fellow Bucs teammate Mike Evans.
Now that Tom Brady is Godwin’s quarterback, and wearing Godwin’s old number, even bigger things are expected in 2020 from the former Penn State star, who finished last season with 86 receptions for 1,333 yards and nine touchdowns, career highs across the board.
Another big year could be just what Godwin needs, too, heading into the 2021 offseason, when he will be a free agent. Anthony Holzman-Escareno over at NFL.com believes Godwin is the next receiver in line for a big payday — somewhere in the $19 million/year range — which is why he named Godwin to his All-Paid Team of Tomorrow.
Per Holzman-Escareno:
“Do I buy Godwin topping [Julio] Jones’ $22 million per season? Nah, I don’t. However, he is in line to receive the next large wide receiver extension. Godwin has enjoyed the luxury of playing across from Mike Evans his entire career, and he still has to show he can duplicate his 2019 success. If he continues his trend toward the top of the wide receiver power rankings, his paycheck will soon parallel his rise at the position.”
A nice payday would help Godwin fund his new hobby, but before he cashes in, he’ll have to prove last season’s success wasn’t a fluke.
