Angels at Giants: Projected starting pitchers

LHP Patrick Sandoval vs. RHP Johnny Cueto

Sandoval, who made his MLB debut last season, is still searching for his first career win. He is winless in 12 starts.

  • This season: 0-2, 3.94 ERA (7 ER, 16 IP) in 3 starts
  • Last start: Loss, 6 IP, 4 ER, 6 H, 2 BB, 5 K vs. Los Angeles Dodgers Friday – Angels lost 7-4
  • Career vs. Giants: 0 appearances

Cueto is coming off his longest outing of 2020, working 7 innings and tossing 104 pitches, but unfortunately, the bullpen failed him. He took a no-hitter into the sixth inning vs. the Dodgers two starts ago.

  • This season: 1-0, 4.62 ERA (13 ER, 25 1/3 IP) in 5 starts
  • Last start: No decision, 7 IP, 2 ER, 3 H, 2 BB, 5 K vs. Oakland A’s Friday – Giants lost 8-7 in 10 innings
  • Career vs. Angels: 2-0, 0.86 ERA (2 ER, 21 IP) in 3 starts, tossing 6 scoreless innings when he last faced them in 2018

Prediction

Giants 7, Angels 4

Moneyline (ML)

The GIANTS (+125) are the STRONGEST PLAY with Cueto on the hill. Surprisingly, with CF Mike Trout, 3B Anthony Rendon and future Hall of Fame 1B Albert Pujols, the Angels (-139) rank 22nd in the majors – 11th in the AL – with a .228 team batting average. The stars are aligned for Cueto to have a good outing.

Run line/Against the spread (ATS)

As long as the juice doesn’t climb above -135, I’m willing to make a small wager on the GIANTS +1.5 (-134). They’re 4-1 in their last five vs. the RL. The Angels (-1.5, +110) are 1-5 in their last six vs. the RL, and 9-15 vs. the RL overall. Otherwise, I’ll pass.

Over/Under (O/U)

The OVER 8.5 (-115) is the play. The Giants (14-7-4 O/U record) and the Angels (16-8 O/U) are the best Over teams in the majors – hitting the OVER 66.7% of the time.

The Angels have actually played 6 Overs in a row and are 8-1 O/U in their last nine, while the Giants have played 5 Overs in a row and are 8-1-1 O/U in their last 10. Here’s counting on the Overs to continue Wednesday night.

LHP Tyler Anderson vs. RHP Griffin Canning

Anderson heads in with an 0-1 record, 3.63 ERA and 1.50 WHIP with nine strikeouts across 17 1/3 innings in three starts and two relief appearances so far.

  • Anderson has turned in five innings in each of his past two outings after logging just 1 2/3 innings in his first start July 24 on the road against the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Prediction

Giants 8, Angels 7

Moneyline (ML)

The GIANTS (+155) and Angels (-176) have each been disappointing, but San Francisco was actually expected to struggle. The Halos invested plenty in the offseason to improve their team, but they have yet to jell. Pitching has been a problem, and Canning has been knocked around pretty good. Anderson has at least been serviceable, giving his team a chance in his previous two appearances. This might be a slugfest with the visitors scratching out a rare road win.

New to sports betting? A winning $10 bet on San Francisco returns a profit of $15.50 if the Giants upset the Angels.

Run line/Against the spread (ATS)

The Giants (+1.5, -134) aren’t worth the risk, as it’s just too much chalk to eat. This will be a slugfest, and if you like the Giants like I do, just play them straight up. No need to get cute.

Over/Under (O/U)

OVER 10 (-110) is the way to go in this one. While San Francisco is so-so offensively, posting 4.39 runs per game offensively, they rank 29th in the majors in ERA at 5.69. It doesn’t help that they are also dead-last defensively with 21 errors. That’s a recipe for a losing record, which they have, and a recipe for plenty of over results as well.
