Marquez Valdes-Scantling says Charmin is helping on Chiefs’ trip to Germany

Chiefs WR Marquez Valdes-Scantling says Charmin is helping on the team’s trip to Germany

The defending Super Bowl champions are entering Week 9 this Sunday, ready to bounce back with a strong showing against the Miami Dolphins. They will face the challenge of playing in a different country and trying to maintain their routine but will have some help in a very private manner.

Chiefs Wire’s Ed Easton Jr. recently sat down with wide receiver Marquez Valdes-Scantling, courtesy of Charmin Ultra Soft Smooth Tear, to discuss the importance of using its brand-new toilet paper on the trip to Frankfurt, Germany, and adjusting to different game times throughout the season.

“Yeah, Charmin is helping us out, man. Now, as we go over to Germany, being our home away from home, we are able to keep our routine the same,” Valdes-Scantling explained. “They gave us this Charmin Ultra Soft Smooth Tear toilet paper that we’re going to be able to take with us and just be able to go to another part of the world.

“You never know what to expect. And so being able to have some safety net and knowing what you’re going to be able to take with you is important because there’s nothing worse than getting to a spot and not having something comfortable. So Charmin is doing a great job.”

The former Green Bay Packers standout is no stranger to playing on a national platform. He explained his many primetime appearances before suiting up for the Chiefs.

“I mean, I played for the Packers before. And so we always had the primetime games, you know, we hardly ever had the 12 or one o’clock time slot. I think I probably had, you know, maybe eight of those, and my six-year plan, you know, maybe get one, one a year, two, if you’re lucky. And so I’ve always been on the 3:25 slot or the 7:25 slot.

“So, I’m just used to it. You know, and obviously, we are a good football team, people want to see you play. And so I’m just grateful that I’ve been on the good teams that people want to see play, as opposed to always having a 12 o’clock game that no one cares. And no one’s in the stands watching you play.”

The Chiefs are far and away one of the more popular teams in the NFL, and being the reigning Super Bowl champions has landed them in marquee games like this Sunday in Frankfurt.

Germany had never sacked a coach before. Then came Hansi Flick.

Germany is on a run of just four wins from 17 games

Hansi Flick has made some history as Germany men’s national team head coach — just not the kind he would have wanted.

Flick was fired on Sunday, marking the first time a Germany men’s coach had been relieved of his duties since the position was created in 1926.

The final straw in a tenure that lasted just over two years was a 4-1 defeat to Japan in a friendly on Saturday. It was Germany’s fifth match in a row without a win, and continued a run of just four wins from 17 games.

“The committee agreed that the German national team needs a fresh impetus after the recent disappointing results. Going into the European Championship next summer, we need confidence and optimism in the country regarding our team,” said German federation (DFB) president Bernd Neuendorf in a statement.

“This has been one of the most difficult decisions I have had to make during my time in this role because I really respect Hansi Flick and his assistants, both on a professional and personal level. Sporting success is of the upmost importance to the DFB, which is why this decision had to be made.”

Rudi Völler, one of three coaches taking temporary charge, added: “Hansi Flick worked incredibly hard over the past few months with his coaching team to try and turn things around after the World Cup in Qatar. Unfortunately though, he hasn’t been able to do so. The Japan game clearly showed us that we couldn’t carry on like this.”

Germany crashed out of the 2022 World Cup at the group stage, finishing third in a group that also included Japan, Spain and Costa Rica.

Julian Nagelsmann, who like Flick is a former Bayern Munich manager, has been tipped as a potential replacement ahead of Germany hosting the European Championship next summer.

Team Germany roster: Meet the national team that beat Team USA at the 2023 FIBA World Cup

Franz Wagner and Moritz Wagner are not the only NBA players on this team.

Although the United States was considered the favorite to win the 2023 FIBA World Cup, they lost to Germany in the semifinals.

After the upset victory over Team USA on Friday in the Philippines, the German national team will advance to the finals and will face Serbia for a chance to win the gold medal in the competition.

Germany is coached by Gordon Herbert, who led Germany to win a bronze medal at the European Championships in 2022. His roster at the FIBA World Cup has four NBA players, more than any other nation except for just Team USA (12) as well as Australia (9) and Canada (7).

This team, also known as Die Mannschaft, is currently the only undefeated nation remaining in the tournament. Here are the players representing their country in this competition.

2023 FIBA World Cup: Latvia’s run comes to an end with 81-79 loss to Germany

Latvia’s run comes to an end with an 81-79 loss to Germany.

Scrambling to get a shot off with mere seconds left, Davis Bertans managed to grab the defensive rebound and pushed the pace to shoot a deep right-wing 3-pointer as time expired.

The ball hit the rim and missed. Just like that, Latvia’s Cinderella run came to an end with an 81-79 loss to Germany in the 2023 FIBA World Cup quarterfinals.

In the back-and-fourth contest, neither team led by more than 14 points. Germany held a 36-34 halftime lead and a 62-59 lead after three quarters.

With less than three minutes to go, it looked as if Latvia’s magic had finally ran out as Germany built a double-digit lead. Instead, Latvia had one final push left. It almost erased a 10-point deficit with 2:24 remaining, closing the game on a 10-2 run.

Despite the heartbreaking loss, Bertans was excellent for Latvia. In 34 minutes, he had 20 points on 6-of-14 shooting and two rebounds. He went 6-of-13 from 3 to lead Latvia’s offense.

Bertans previewed the type of performance he’d have in an elimination game with three quick 3-pointers to start the game. The 30-year-old showed off his range with several deep 3-point attempts.

Alas, Bertans’ most important shot attempt was a bit too strong as he missed the chance to hit a game-winner. He immediately sulked following the buzzer but Latvia’s run was impressive in itself and should be a point of pride for him.

Let’s look at instant reactions and highlights from Latvia’s two-point loss.

2023 FIBA World Cup: Australia loses close contest to Germany, 85-82

Australia lost a close game to Germany as Josh Giddey was forced to sit out a critical late possession.

Australia dropped a heartbreaker in their second group game as they lost to Germany, 85-82. The Boomers are now 1-1 in group play.

Down by one point, Josh Giddey had to helplessly watch from the sidelines as Australia failed to score with seven seconds remaining in regulation. The 20-year-old was forced to sit out the massive possession due to FIBA rules not allowing him in after bleeding from the elbow.

Giddey had one more shot at a miracle when he heaved a near-full court 3 as time expired that could’ve potentially forced overtime. Instead, the missed 3 was controversial as Giddey immediately confronted the referees about why it wasn’t a shooting foul.

The questionable officiating decisions capped off a highly entertaining close fourth quarter between two of the better teams in the 2023 FIBA World Cup. A 10-0 run by Germany to start the fourth quarter quickly erased Australia’s four-point lead entering the final frame.

That run was really the turning point of the game, as Germany outscored Australia 23-16 in the fourth quarter to come out with the win. Former Thunder guard Dennis Schroder was excellent in this game as he had 30 points on 10-of-19 shooting and eight assists.

Meanwhile, Giddey turned in a gusty performance after a slow start. In 30 minutes, he had 17 points on 7-of-17 shooting, three assists and one rebound. He also went 3-of-6 from the free-throw line.

Thunder teammate Jack White had two rebounds and four turnovers in nine minutes off the bench.

Let’s look at highlights and instant reactions from Australia’s three-point loss.

The five biggest disappointments of the 2023 Women’s World Cup

Several teams expected to go on deep runs were instead bounced early from the tournament

The 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup has provided fans with plenty of intrigue, giving everyone a reason to tune in at every turn. Whether it was a major upset or a down-to-the-wire finish, almost every game has featured something that every soccer fan could enjoy. It’s part of the reason this World Cup has been so entertaining.

But when there are upsets and close finishes, it also means that some teams inevitably underperform and fail to meet expectations. And while that may be entertaining for the common fan, it’s a massive disappointment for fans of that nation — and there were plenty of teams who fell under this category this year.

With that in mind, let’s take a look at the five biggest disappointments of this year’s World Cup.

Dennis Schröder trolled Dillon Brooks by pointing at him after a basket during a FIBA scrimmage

LeBron’s old teammate, Dennis Schröder, made rival Dillon Brooks look foolish.

Toronto Raptors guard Dennis Schröder is developing a heated rivalry with Houston Rockets wing Dillon Brooks during FIBA play.

Brooks, who was booed by the crowd during a previous exhibition game for Team Canada against Germany, hasn’t had it easy during these two games. During the first game, Schroder pulled a nasty crossover on Brooks and then pointed directly at him once the Houston wing fell to the floor.

When the two national teams played another exhibition game on Sunday, tensions got high once more multiple times during the game. Brooks had a very physical closeout when he was guarding Schröder on the perimeter.

Not long after that relatively intense moment, Schröder sprinted out for a full-court leak out and beat Brooks in transition.

Immediately after making the basket, the Rockets guard (once again!) pointed directly at Brooks. Here is the video:

I’m going to assume you’re going to want to see that again in slow motion in case you couldn’t quite make out what happened the first time.

So here you go, we made sure to take care of that for you:

It’s safe to say there is probably still some bad blood between the two players after an intense postseason series between the Lakers (where Schröder played last season) and the Grizzlies (where Brooks had previously played his entire career).

That much was apparent when the two were on the court during FIBA play.

Schröder, the captain, finished the exhibition match with a team-high 26 points (6-10 FG) with 8 assists. Brooks had 8 points (3-8 FG) but his team ended up with the victory in overtime.

Canada (and Brooks) may have the last once the tournament actually begins, too. The Canadians have the second-best odds to win the FIBA World Cup while the Germans are at eighth-best right now, according to DraftKings.
