SEC Championship: Georgia vs Alabama Game Preview

Why Georgia Will Win

Okay, Georgia defense. It’s time to show just how good you really are.

The Alabama offensive line has talent – lots and lots of talent. It has future NFL players, all-star skill, depth, and all the guys you’d expect a Nick Saban team to have at this stage of the program’s consistent dominance.

It also doesn’t provide a lick of pass protection.

QB Bryce Young is talented and savvy enough to overcome the issues – for the most part – but no matter how many ways you want to spin it, if you’ve scored three points for the first 58ish minutes and you need to go 97 yards to save your season against a very-good-not-Georgia Auburn D, something isn’t quite right somewhere on your O.

Georgia’s defense has been a brick wall all season long.

It allows just 79 rushing yards per game, it’s the best in the nation in pass efficiency defense, No. 2 in pass D, and it leads the country in total defense.

This isn’t the team to go against when your offense is still trying to figure some things out.

Best of all for the Dawgs, it’s not like they’ve had to tax their top players in a whole slew of high pressure situations. No one doubts that this group can rise up when needed – it did that in the opener against Clemson – but it’s been so good at getting the job done early that this is about as fresh a team as you’ll find this late into the year.

However …

Why Alabama Will Win

That team that’s coming out of the tunnel as the SEC West champion has guys, too.

Yeah, yeah, yeah, the pass protection hasn’t been great, the offensive line hasn’t been consistent, and the defense has a weird way of checking out for long stretches from time to time, but the team is here.

Auburn could’ve taken care of business for everyone by just staying in bounds, or coming up with a stop when the Tide offense had 1st and 97 to go, but nope.

Does Alabama have the talent to hang around with Georgia? Of course.

Can it run with the Dawgs? Does it have the athletes? Does it have the We’re Alabama And Georgia Isn’t arrogance/confidence? Duh.

Georgia might be playing at a dominant-high level, but it also hasn’t had to deal with anyone that amazing for a while.

Tennessee is fine, and Kentucky is good, and Auburn and Arkansas are solid, but Georgia didn’t have to play Alabama in the regular season. It didn’t have to face Ole Miss, and it didn’t deal with the Mississippi State curveball.

No, of course there’s no dogging the Georgia schedule against nine bowl bound teams – no, there’s NO dogging 12-0 from the SEC – but it’s going to need to find a gear that it hasn’t had to use since early September.

To be kind, let’s just say Alabama is battle tested.

Yeah, Alabama has the guys, and it has …

What’s Going To Happen

Bryce Young.

Really, do you believe that Stetson Bennett is ready to deliver an SEC Championship against an Alabama team has it on Georgia in one key area – pass rush.

Georgia’s pass rush is fantastic. Alabama leads the SEC in sacks and tackles for loss, and Bennett’s not going to have the 19 days to throw he enjoyed throughout the season.

However, this is going to be a LONG game.

Alabama will have the early energy. Young and company will score on its first drive, the charged up D will get off the field after a sack, and Bama will get a field goal off of its second drive.

For about a half, Alabama will play like the team that needs this to stay alive for the College Football Playoff, and Georgia will play like the team that’s in no matter what.

Social media will have handed Young the Heisman, Cincinnati fans will start freaking out as their team – playing Houston at the same time as this – struggles through its own start, and then …

Georgia will settle in.

The running game won’t take over, but it’ll be effective enough to take the pressure off of Bennett. The defense will start to stuff everything the Alabama ground game tries to do, it’ll hold firm on a deep Tide drive, and everything will slowly turn before a turnover leads to a late lead.

Young will march the Tide down the field with one last shot to pull it off, but his fourth down pass in the final moments will be broken up in the end zone to give Georgia the national – uh, er, sorry – SEC championship.

Why Georgia Will Win

Georgia didn’t get the memo that no one in the SEC is playing any defense this year.

The Bulldogs lead the nation in run defense, are second in total defense just behind a Houston team that played one game, and it’s been able to clamp down when needed in each of the first three games.

Arkansas and Tennessee were each in their respective games against the Dawgs, and then up came the wall in the second halves, and both games were over.

On the other side, how is it that Georgia is able to get by with Stetson Bennett at quarterback? He’s not making mistakes, he’s hitting the downfield throws that Jake Fromm didn’t last year, and he’s getting a whole lot of time to work behind a line that’s doing a terrific job so far.

The Alabama secondary has been toasted way too easily so far getting hammered for 322 passing yards per game and coming off a rough day getting ripped up by the Ole Miss attack.

However …

CFN Experts Picks: NFL

Why Alabama Will Win

Yes, the Georgia defense has been outstanding, but after dealing with fine Arkansas, Auburn, and Tennessee offenses, get ready for a whole other level of offensive fabulousness.

The Tide put away the Missouri and Texas A&M games early on and coasted, and last week against the Rebels, the attack was unstoppable after a few empty drives in the first quarter. Bama leads the nation averaging 51 points per game and is third in the country in yards.

Georgia might have the defense, but doesn’t have the offense to keep up if the Tide offense gets going early?

Mac Jones is playing like a Heisman candidate – hitting 80% of his passes for 1,101 yards and eight touchdowns.

Najee Harris is playing like a Heisman candidate – running for 347 yards and ten touchdowns and catching seven passes.

DeVonta Smith might be the best wide receiver in the country, if it’s not Jaylen Waddle.

However …

What’s Going To Happen

Georgia knows what it’s doing.

It’s great at controlling the clock, letting the defense take over games, making teams play at its level. Is Bennett up to the job?

Yeah, and it still won’t be enough.

Georgia will come up with more than enough stops to keep this from ever getting out of hand, and this certainly won’t be the Bama-Ole Miss game with haymakers being traded, but after last week the Tide defense will be better and the offense will still be the offense.

Georgia, though, will have its chances to come through, but it’ll settle for a few second half field goals when it’ll need touchdowns.

By the way, this might be the first of three meetings – these two could hook up in the SEC Championship and again in the College Football Playoff. Both of them are just that good.

Georgia vs Alabama early preseason fearless prediction and game preview.

How crazy is it to try predicting a college football game months in advance when 1) there wasn’t any spring ball, 2) there aren’t any real depth charts to go off of, 3) no one has ANY clue how to get sports going again, and 4) we don’t even know what the 2020 season is going to be?

Just crazy enough to potentially get some fantastic values on the early lines.

You can bet now at BetMGM on a whole lot of college football games – including going really insane looking at lines in November – with the possibility of hitting something big.

We’ll be diving in a whole lot deeper when we do this for real just before the season – crossing fingers that there is one. But for now …

Georgia vs Alabama Game Preview: Preseason Version

Why Georgia Will Win

The defensive front seven should be in place to hold up against the pounding that Alabama is going to try to apply.

Georgia might have lost a whole slew of parts to the NFL, but the defense was hardly gutted. A few good starters are done – including the starters on the front three – but there’s going to be a strong enough rotation to hold up against a Tide O that’s going to start out the season trying to flatten everyone.

The Bulldog secondary, though, will be the strength early on. It might have been hit for 230 passing yards or more in five of the last seven games last season, and it’ll give up its share of big plays to this wonderful Bama receiving corps, but it’s not going to get ripped up.

It’s going to be one of the nation’s best defenses after getting dates against Virginia and East Tennessee State to tune-up, but …

[vertical-gallery id=512537]

Why Alabama Will Win

Just how quickly will that Georgia O line come together?

It’s Georgia, so there’s more NFL talent about to rise up and produce, but four starters are gone from last year’s line, the backfield has to hope the new stars are ready for the massive game, and the passing attack that was game-managed throughout last season has to be ready to keep up if this gets into any sort of a shootout.

It might not have been a vintage Alabama killer D last year, but the youth movement should rise up early on against the still-emerging Dawg O.

Getting back LB Dylan Moses won’t hurt.

On the other side, the Tide offensive line is expected to return four starters to pave the way for Najee Harris and Brian Robinson when, arguably, the nation’s best receiving corps isn’t trying to hit the home run. Talent-wise, Georgia can matchup with Bama, but experience will matter.

What’s Going To Happen

Assuming it’s Jamie Newman taking over the Georgia quarterbacking job, will he be ready to be the best offensive player on the field? That’s what he might have to be to pull this off.

He’ll be good, but the offense won’t get enough out of the ground game to get by.

Be somewhat shocked if this isn’t a good defensive battle – at least for a little while. Bama will win with experience and home field playing big roles, but looking several months ahead – again, this will be done in far more detail once the time comes – that’s an awfully big early line considering how strong the Dawg D should be.

Georgia’s NFL talent will keep this close, and it should be a fantastic game in what might be the SEC Championship preview, but not having new-Indianapolis Colt kicker Rodrigo Blankenship will be a factor.
